Uncle Leo Posted August 4, 2008 Posted August 4, 2008 I fish quite a bit of T-Rig. Lately about half of the fish I caught have been hooked in the lower lip. Also as of late the bite has been very light sometimes feeling just a bit of weight. Out of curiousity why is this. Am I just slow on the draw? Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted August 4, 2008 Super User Posted August 4, 2008 I would say if you are hooking the lip and not the gills, you are still ok. I dont think you are waiting too long. Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted August 4, 2008 Super User Posted August 4, 2008 i hook a lot of my t-rig fish in the lower lip too, and i have found that they stay hooked better when they are hooked on the bottom lip! Quote
Uncle Leo Posted August 4, 2008 Author Posted August 4, 2008 Have not lost any. This is the first year I experienced this, always hooked in upper lip in the past. Quote
Super User Sam Posted August 4, 2008 Super User Posted August 4, 2008 You are allowing the bass to turn the bait in their mouths while they are walking away with it. As long as they do not swallow the hook or have the hook in their gills I see no reason to be concerned. You may want to do two experiments. First - set the hook a lilttle sooner. Second, rig your plastics upside down. Give 'em a shot. P.S. Just kidding about the second experiment. ;D Quote
Uncle Leo Posted August 4, 2008 Author Posted August 4, 2008 I do drop my rod and set the hook when I feel tension on the line so maybe I do need to set sooner. Quote
The Rooster Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 I've been hooking them in the lower lip too and I'm somewhat inexperienced with the T-rig so maybe that's my problem too, setting the hook too late. I usually watch for the line to move off in one direction before setting the hook, so I know the fish is there. Quote
MNGeorge Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 When T-rigging the Senko, we have had no bottom lip hook ups. I've fished a wacky rigged Senko with an o-ring, a piece of heat shrink tubing or hooked just through the worm. All 3 rigs have produced mostly bottom lip hook ups. I agree about not losing any that have been hooked in the bottom lip so that is a plus. On the negative side, lipping the fish into the boat requires a bit more caution. Quote
skillet Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 Have been fishing for bass for quite a while and have never been consistant in hooking in the top or bottom lip. Don worry be hoppy !!! As Ever, skillet Quote
adclem Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 I have been getting a mixed result as well. Some in the top but mostly in the bottom lip. As long as the get in the boat.lol Later, Quote
JShrock07 Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 I also have a mix of where the hook is in the fish's mouth. I try my hardest to set the hook as soon as I beleive it is time but sometimes I let the hold the bait to long and that is when I hook'em in the belly. But I was always told if you hook a fish though the top of the lip that, that is what the fish are wanting to eat... Is that true?? :-? Quote
