I had a pretty cool experience last night while fishing, one that doesn't happen much anymore... I could clearly feel my pulse in both hands while holding the rod and reel. Kind of like I had increased blood flow to the nerves in my hands. I don't know how to describe it other than being so in touch with my hands that everything was clear & pronounced and nothing went unnoticed. It's sort of an unconscious effort of mind and body working together in perfect harmony. It made for very easy T and C-rigging, even in the wind and 25'-30' deep brush piles. Even on the light bites it was like I was watching the fish.

It used to happen pretty often but only happens occasionally, these days. :( I had forgotten how cool it is. I sure wish I could get to that 'place' on demand...

I figure that a number of you can relate.  I think Catt probably lives in the zone.  ...lol

I am still looking for "the zone"

Hopefully I can mark it as a mental waypoint, but right now it feels like finding a needle in a haystack.....LOL

Imagine Rick Clunn being in that "zone"

on every outing throughout his career.

I have been there a couple of times,

but it doesn't seem real and I remember

those times as more of a dream than reality.

Several years ago, on a pond I still fish

regularly, I caught nine bass on ten casts

and 12 bass on twenty in the morning

twighlight. Over more than seven years

of fishing the same water, nothing comparable

has ever happened.

We were talking, laughing and having fun, no doubt about it...  I just happened to have a night where even subtle bites felt vicious.  It wasn't a case of concentration or focus.

I feel the pain of this search... used to have it when drift fishing for steelhead and salmon.... have lost it as I have gotten older.

Flech,

That is awesome.  I think i've only been that way once.  I was fishing right next to a buddy and caught like 17 bass to his 1.  Kept asking if he wanted a beaver, but he was to proud to take one.  BTW,  I was out on Belton Friday.  Belton is your backyard right?  I'll be back Tuesday evening.

Being in the "zone" you are referring to may be just an active feeding period for the bass. Bass are normally in a negative to neutral feeding mode throughout the day. But once in awhile, you least expect it, they suddenly turn active. Biting and hitting on anything that moves. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, pray you are on the water!  :)

We were at Stillhouse.  No "big" fish landed, all were under 5lbs... I did lose one near the boat but didn't get to see the fish as it kept peeling line and heading back into the brush.  It was a strong fish, no doubt, but I don't know how big.  :-/

mattm,  yes, I live in Belton.

3 (experienced deep water) fisherman in the same boat, throwing the exact same lizards at the same brushpiles...  different experiences.  If it was a sudden feed, they were watching me cast.  ...lol

Flechero, the Zone is a wonderful place and happens more often now in my fishing experiences than ever before. I learned this thru guiding for years and realizing that My Zone happened regularly and most always after I had my client solid in the fish. I RELAXED

Nowadays I fish without an agenda and I am much more at peace in this wonderful adventure we call fishing. Better to say "Just enjoy the moment" and you will find that The Zone is not far away..

For some reason i find the zone while fishing alone at around midnight-4am. I love having a fishing partner but it can throw you off your game . Everyone should do the alone zone at least a few times a month.Dont forget the camera.lol

Flechero,

Isn't "The Zone" a great place to be? For some reason, I've been there most of this season. It's been one of "Those" years for me. I swear I can feel the fish swimming up to my bait.

That surely is a sweet place to be. For me, it is more than just catching fish and it can happen whether or not the fish are active.  It is when you're in such a state that nothing escapes your senses. You're just in tune with everything.

Your casts are placed well, you don't mistake a snag for a nibble, your hook sets are pure, and you don't lose a fish from hook set to lipping.

I haven't been in that zone this season (out with a broken ankle) with the exception of this past Monday.
