Low_Budget_Hooker Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Alert. Tomorrow night, GO GET 'EM BOYS!! Quote
SuskyDude Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Never had a full moon do anything for me in freshwater, except for around the spawn. A full moon during the right water temp, photo period, water level, puhes the prespawn/spawn activity in my river into overdrive. Other than that, a full moon means nothing to me Neither does a new moon, or a waxing gibbous, waning gibbous, etc, etc. They all fish the same. If you ask me, Lunar tables, or Solunar tables, or whatever, is a bunch of silly talk. I know, I know, such and such an expert says they do matter, and If I buy his book and subscribe to the website, then I too can benifit from the eerie powers of the moon. No thanks. And Im sure some guys are gonna chime in and say they are all about it, which is cool, I have just yet to be convinced. Saltwater, on the other hand, in my limited experience, seems to be a different story. Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted July 17, 2008 Super User Posted July 17, 2008 I am not a total believer but can attest that many times when it says "prime times" are such and such that it is just that! Lately I have been going out during the middle of the day in the burning hot sun and no wind and killing them during these so called prime times. Let me tell you and the Florida guys know it: This is no place to be out on the water in the summer in the middle of the day. Most fishing is done in the evening or early morn during dark hours. Quote
Brian_Reeves Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Why TOMORROW night?! I'm going fishing TONIGHT! That means I'm gonna have to bring my flashlight again ;D Quote
Super User Tin Posted July 17, 2008 Super User Posted July 17, 2008 I can't wait, it was exactly this time last year I whacked them on a local rat factory. Fishing a 6 dock stretch with a grass line about 30 feet infront of the docks. In 2 hours I put 15 fish in the boat between 4-6 pounds. The biggest two went 6-4 and 6-15. Can't wait to go get jiggy with it. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted July 18, 2008 Super User Posted July 18, 2008 I have been fishing by the maori charts which is the moon phases for many years. Then Field & stream discontinued posting them. I caught many bass by following those charts. When i caught my 10lb bass it said the fishing was "Good Early" so i went before dawn. I would eat, sleep and fish by those charts. I wish i could find them again somehwere so i could use them again. It sure made a difference in shore fishing for sure. They do say to fish 3 or 4 days before and after the moon phases. I know the Infisherman guys did a show about fishing for record breaking size fish by fishing by the full moon. www.in-fisherman.com/reference/solunar/IFD_solunar0708.jpg www.fishersnet.com/lunar.html If anyone finds the Maori Fishing charts please tell me. I followed the days and times exactly to the moon phases and did awesome fishing from shore. While its not a 100% given it did give me an edge following it. I really like the early am times when no one else is on the water or shore fishing its just me and the animals and the fish too. But being stealthy is the key to success too we need to be very quiet. Those big bass are right up against the shoreline. Thanks for the refresh everytime i stop following this i continue to be in a slump. Quote
bassbanger Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 I have this ESPN fshing forecast on my phone as a tools on the go. shows the moon phase and the feeding activity hourly daily, along with a barometer plot and numerous other things i guess if anything it just gives me more confidense haha we will see i have only 10 trips under my belt but it gets better everytime. -Randy Quote

I grew up on the ocean. fishing it since I was a kid and you're right, saltwater, can be VERY predictable. I guess I just naturally carried that way of thinking over to my freshwater side. Call it whatever you want, I"M EXCITED to get out there this weekend Quote

JShrock07 Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 I won't be fishing tonight but i will be going out as soon as daybreaks and hopefully I will have great luck. I don't know how well fishing the morning after a full moon is but hopefully I'll do good. But either way I will let you know how I did. Quote
Jake P Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 I was driving home and it felt like it was sunrise the moon is so bright. Quote
Fishin247365 Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 New moons have always seemed to be more productive for me than a full moon. But I seldom pay much attention to the moon phases as I do the barometric pressure. Ether way, new moon, wax on - waning off, low pressure, high pressure, etc. I go as much as I possibly can. Quote
George Welcome Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Attributable events associated with full moon: -the homicide rate -traffic accidents -crisis calls to police or fire stations -domestic violence -births of babies -suicide -major disasters -casino payout rates -assassinations -kidnappings -aggression by professional hockey players -violence in prisons -psychiatric admissions [one study found admissions were lowest during a full moon] -agitated behavior by nursing home residents -assaults -gunshot wounds -stabbings -emergency room admissions [but see] -behavioral outbursts of psychologically challenged rural adults -lycanthropy -vampirism -alcoholism -sleep walking -epilepsy -good fishing -bad fishing -good hunting -bad hunting -romantic feelings If so many studies have failed to prove a significant correlation between the full moon and anything, why do so many people believe in these lunar myths? Kelly, Rotton, and Culver suspect four factors: media effects, folklore and tradition, misconceptions, and cognitive biases. A fifth factor should be considered, as well: communal reinforcement. nboucher Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Good one, George. Seems the major advantage to a full moon is you can see better. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted July 18, 2008 Super User Posted July 18, 2008 How can you turn down when the maori charts says excellent, good or good early fishing? I can't I gots to go!!!!!!!!!! Nothing stops me. They say the gravitational pull of the moon turns on the fish. Again this is when the guys at infisherman say the record breaking fish can be caught. I'm just happy to catch a few fish at this time and if a large one shows up thats a plus. I have hit some bass feeding frenzys a few times and can't explain it yet to this day. Were talking from shore in one spot catching 19 bass on stop. Or nailing bass after bass for an hour and a half and i'm talking good size bass too. Fishing with my son catching doubles after doubles just before the rain hits about 2 hours before. Could it be the front along with a moon phase causing this frenzy? I would surely like to know whats going on at this time. I have caught about 30 to 50lbs of bass (LMB), large smallies, crappies the size of 5 gallon bucket lids and large sunnies too during these frenzy's. Quote
JShrock07 Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 I went out Yesterday at daybreak I was extremely disappointed with the outcome. I caught one LMB and it only went 1lb. I fished all kinds of lures that I have zero confidence in. I started my day with topwater and suprisingly no luck, then I went to a stick worm, then a rat-l-trap, spinnerbait, and finally I threw a crankbait ( zero confidence) that went about 15' and after an hour throwing it I caught my fish one, so I stuck with it. I got 5 more bites but i beleive I was reeling it too fast. After that I started throwing a jig (zero confidence) with no luck. I then picked up my crank bait again and caught a 7.12 blue catfish. It was a hell of a fight I thought I had a monster bass > > > LOL well I don't know about a full moon anymore :-/ Quote

Low_Budget_Hooker Posted July 19, 2008 Author Posted July 19, 2008 GW- You forgot to mention the lunatic ex-girlfriends that come out hunting.... I go to the lake to hide, not fish ;D FYI- Decent bite at the lake last night, just got the report from the bay, the boys are smacking 20-25 lb stripers on Dahlberg diver flies. WOOHOO!!! Quote
George Welcome Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 Had a great bite with C-rigs: nothing to do with the moon but rather it was a matter of keeping the bait wet. Only a 9.5 for the big one today. Getting tired of playing with the dinks. Quote
Evan Pease Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 Id say people get worked up over the moon since we are all ancestors of cave people that worshipped it. Sort of an instinctive thing maybe. Quote

I hear ya man,...maybe we could share a place closer to the equator and get the chance for some real fish. : One more for your list. -Turns ornery captains into smart alecks ;D Quote
fishbear Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 Full moon my A------ Fished for 6 hours last night on Jackson Lake here in Georgia. Caught two dinks on a popper right at dark.... threw everything but the kitchen sink at them the rest of the night.... NOTHING! Moon was up the whole time. Snakes were out though.... tried getting in the boat GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR Quote
paangler3117 Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 i tend to think since the moon has a direct affect on water it would have to have some affect on fishing. How much, I do not know. It's all just one peice of a whole mossaic of things that affect fishing. I actually prefer night fishing during a new moon. Jim Quote
JShrock07 Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 Snakes were out though.... tried getting in the boat GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll never be out at night again!!!! lol I freakin' hate snakes!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Quote
