To Peg or not to Peg!

How do you decide if you are going to peg your weight or not when fishing soft plastics?

Pads and emergent or very thick vegetation = peg.  All else, free.

Vegetation, standing timber ---> peg

I peg when I am fishing in or through stuff...  brush, weeds, timber, etc.,  which is most of the time.

In super thick stuff, I peg it right up against the bait.

In moderate stuff like grass beds I will still peg the weight, but a few inches up the line to give the bait better action.

Everything else I keep the weight free.

Lily pads, hydrilla and thick timber are the times I opt to peg.

I only peg if I am punching mats with 1 to 1.5oz weights. I try to peg as little as possible. I seem to have a better hookup ratio without pegging and the fish seem to hold the bait longer.

Isnt the whole idea of a bullet weight the fact that it slides up and down your line?

I think it helps to not peg. If a bass picks up your bait he wont feel weight intill your setting the hook, which is too late.
