I heard of it but never tried it and never saw anyone doing it so i know nothing. Dead sticking is just what it says. Allowing your bait to remain motionless with no action imparted by the rod (a dead stick). You do it by casting your bait to the target and letting settle (or die) on the top or bottom. It works because fish are lazy predators and will take advantage of a dead snack they don't have to chase down. If you have ever had a fish on after spending 5 minutes picking out a backlash you will know that it works. JMHO Ronnie Quote

I went to help get it out and came back several minutes later to reel in my line and saw that it was under the boat wrapped around the trolling motor. On the other end was a nice 6lber Quote

I thought I was the only one this ever happened to!!! hahaha I have caught my biggest bass by having the WORST backlash!!!! Now that I know this works I will start dead sticking it more often!!!! ;D ;D Quote
sdcoll Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 wow i had never hear of this before, but it makes sence i guess.something to try next time i lunch while fishing but just 1 question tho when this happens wheres the hookset?in there gut or throat? Quote
Joe Boss Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 Most of my hooksets have been in the roof of the mouth or lip. I use the 5" Senko for dead sticking. I find that size works best so they don't swallow the bait. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted June 20, 2008 Super User Posted June 20, 2008 One of my "secret techniques". : Another reason it works so well is because it's rarely (never) used on purpose. Dead sticking takes a lot of patience and is usually described as boring, very boring. I employee the technique throughout an outing whenever I have a smoke. I don't like to "fish" when I smoke, so I take a break and am sometimes rewarded in a big way. My biggest bass this year was caught on a jig/ Paca Craw that sat on the bottom motionless for more than ten minutes while I was messing with my reel and line. When I finally got back to "fishing" I thought, D! "How could I get hung up in the middle of the pond?" 8-) Quote
gatrboy53 Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 it must be emphacized that it is not a good practice to throw out your bait and forget about it for several min.you can and will gut hook fish that will be harmful to them. deadstick is a technique that requires constant attention to your bait so you'll know when you get bit. it is a technique used mainly on nuetral or negative fish, fish that are not actively feeding.which is most of the time. how long to let a bait sit is anywhere from 15 sec. to a min. or more usually depends on the patience of the fisherman.there are situations if you know you are on fish to let it sit longer. Super User roadwarrior Posted June 20, 2008 Super User Posted June 20, 2008 Well, I guess we have different definitions of the technique. I fish all soft plastics, all of the time, as you have defined "dead sticking". My baits sit for at least a minute on the initial cast. I'm thinking more like 5-10 minutes before moving the bait 6"-12". Sometimes I only make four or five casts in an hour! : Quote
Super User Catt Posted June 20, 2008 Super User Posted June 20, 2008 Y'all would be very bored fishing with me even when not dead sticking I'll pause 30 seconds or more between movements when fishing a Texas Rig or Jig-N-Craw. The reason I anchor when fishing structure is because I don't want to be distracted by constantly dealing with a trolling motor. Many times I'll seat on a piece of structure for 3-4 hours slowly picking it apart with 360 degree casts. But the results pay extreme dividends like Total Bass Caught: 980 Total days on the water: 58 Average daily catch: 16.89 Bass under 14: 382 Bass over 14: 441 Bass over 5 lbs: 63 Bass over 6 lbs: 51 Bass over 7 lbs: 17 Bass over 8 lbs: 9 Bass over 9 lbs: 6 Bass over 10 lbs: 11 Quote
Uncle Leo Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 WOW talk about using your time while dead sticking. these results must have took a bit of logging. I also have caught numerous Bass picking out a back lash, even with a crankbiat floating on the top, new type of topwater bassin. 32251 Posted June 21, 2008 Posted June 21, 2008 Anyone use a dead stick technique with multiple rods? Seems like all that down time with only one rod could be reduced drastically with two rods in the water. Anyone do it? Quote

Super User Catt Posted June 21, 2008 Super User Posted June 21, 2008 dsaavedra, it's quite simple; those are the number of bass in each weight category. A 6 pound bass is a bass that exceed 5.99 pounds yet less than 6.99. Quote

Super User grimlin Posted June 22, 2008 Super User Posted June 22, 2008 I dead stick a lot in the summer time.Summer time is sometimes my best fishing days.Cast it out, reel in slack line, reach in my pocket, open a can of grizzy wintergreen dip, smack the can to get it packed tight, get a pinch, put it in my mouth, give a a few seconds and my first spit, then proceed to make my first movement of the bait with a long, long pause and BAM! Fish on! It's that easy sometimes.... ;D Quote
