Spinner Craazy Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 The catch rate at a particular pond has went way up in the last week and I'm wondering why. Maybe someone can answer. Things that may be contributing factors.... 1) Bass are spawning 2) 200lbs of minnows added to pond (~2 acres in size) 3) Stocked with additional 50 bass 4) Abnormally high amount of rain with severe storms I'm using the same lures with the same techniques. The majority of the bass caught are within 10' of the bank. I'm a beginner and I'm trying to learn what factors turn bass on or off. Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted June 19, 2008 Super User Posted June 19, 2008 Spawning should be done there. The answer is probably the additional (and clueless prey) added maybe along with additional (and clueless) bass added creating high competition. Ten feet from the bank might mean the easy prey is taking refuge along the shoreline. There are my guesses. Was it a sunny or overcast day? Overcast is easier in terms of not putting fish off. Quote

You stated the bass were spawning, indicates the pond has a stable bass population established. 200 lbs of minnows may seem like a lot, 4 lbs per each bass added, however it's like feeding 50 sharks, the minnows won't last very long. In a small pond there is a pecking order, the bigger bass dominate the smaller fish and locate in areas around the pond that fits there needs; easy access to prey. The smaller bass must roam to find prey and tend to cruise the insdie weedline, the adult bass the outside weedline zones and best ambush sites. WRB Quote
