hawghunter1744 Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 I've had 4 fish this year that were on the line being reeled in, jumped out of the water about 30-40 feet out just so that they could show me they were 4+ lbs, and then dove straight into the hydrilla and milfoil at the bottom.... You wanna talk about stuck.. by golly they were. I have 20 lb test with a palomar knot tied to my hook so I figure I'll just pull them out. WRONG!!! I pull and pull and pull but I absolutely cannot get these fish out. I end up pulling the hook through the fishes mouth and losing a good one. How can I pull these fish out without losing them?? basser89 Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Late last summer, I was fishing a lake that has a TON of hydrilla. I was fishing from shore at the time and saw a decent sized hole about 15-20 yards out. I threw a wacky rigged Senko into the hole with my spinning rod spooler with 8# test Sensation. I felt a "tick" and set the hook. She did the same thing you described, came up and showed herself to me a dove straight into the grass. I couldn't move her either so I eased up on her to where I could barely feel her. She ended up backing up out the grass and the fight was on again. She did that two more times before I landed her. That one was 4 1/2lbs. That's what worked for me, hope that helps! Quote
CJ Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 One technique I have had work for me that kinda goes against the rule but, I slack my line and even sometimes push the button to release the spoil. A lot of times the fish will free themselves up and swim out. Then the fights back on. But the best way is to try to muscle them away from any brush or grass. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted June 18, 2008 Super User Posted June 18, 2008 How far bellow the surface does the grass start? Braid will/should cut through the grass but I don't use braid. I like the challenge of mono. I would raise rod and rod tip up, tighten the drag and horse them up and away from the grass. You'll want a heavy action rod with backbone. Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted June 18, 2008 Super User Posted June 18, 2008 3 ways: 1: nip it in the butt and solve the problem before it starts. DONT LET THE FISH GO IN THE GRASS! just horse it in above the grass. 2: use 30-50lb braid, it will not break and it will cut thru the grass pretty nice. 3: give the fish slack and hope it will swim its way out. Super User senile1 Posted June 18, 2008 Super User Posted June 18, 2008 When you have a fish hooked under a mat it doesn't matter if your braid will cut through. You still have to pull the fish through the mat. Sometimes the only way to get them is take your boat to them, lean over and pull the matted vegetation away, and pull them out with your hand. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted June 18, 2008 Super User Posted June 18, 2008 I had this happen to me twice last year. Quote

Good luck with that If you're flipping/pitching grass try to keep it vertical and if you are fishing grass that it not matted on the surface go to the fish. It is far easier to move the bass from a vertical position than horizontal one. Quote

Super User .dsaavedra. Posted June 19, 2008 Super User Posted June 19, 2008 the 4.6lber i caught today had me burried in the absolute deepest stuff you could imagine. it was burried in hydrilla and snot grass and then it got tangled up in lily pads. it was about 6 feet in front of me and i was shore fishing so i got scared i would lose it. i just eased up on the pressure and the fish got it self right out of the pads and i pulled it on shore! Like you said if you pull and pull you just end up pulling the hook out of the bass' mouth. I was always told to go to them. Quote
