thetr20one Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 There are tricks that I can't divulge but once you get it you got it. WHAT! Okay, here is the #1 trick: If you are fishing single hooks, use a Medium Power/ Fast Action spinning rig with a drag you can depend on. When a smallmouth first sees your boat, she will bolt, everytime! You really need equipment you can count on. 8-) If he told us his secret , he would have to kill us !!!!!!!! No nothing like that guys, it's just everybody has their own little system for smallies on Erie. I just have a couple little tricks besides a fast action rod. And RW Erie smallies are surprisingly bold Often drifting you have 150 feet of line out depending on depth. One of those little tricks is eliminating some of the stretch of mono or flouro while maintianing a small amount of it. I think you can figure that one out right. It's the little things that turn a bite into a boated fish!! Quote
BassinBoy Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 I like largemouth because they fight harder and get bigger. They do get bigger but no chance do they fight harder. Especially since smallies dont get as big they fight very well. But because of the largemouths size I much prefer them over smallmouth. I also like the style of fishing for largemouths. You dont have to use little finesse plastics and grubs with jigheads or any of that stuff. Quote

So, from a practical standpoint, the brown fish get just as big unless your're catching largemouth teeners all the time! It's true that largemouth have the potential to be larger, but for the vast majority of fisherman, 6-8 lbs is a fine fish. #2 If you are fishing "little finesse plastics" you're fishing the wrong lures and baits. Big fish like big meals. 8-) Quote
Justin Mahaney Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Smallmouth fight much harder than largemouths, However the largemouths do get bigger ofcourse. So I feel there both just as fun to catch because you really need to fish them a different way to be successful. Quote

So I feel there both just as fun to catch because you really need to fish them a different way to be successful. I don't think that is the case, either. For the most part, lures that work best for largemouth also work best for smallmouth. The only differences in the species involve structure/ cover and current. Although largemouth certainly relate to structure, smallmouth always associate with it except when following bait schools in open water. Perhaps on some lakes smallmouth can be found in cover, but that is rarely the case in this region. For river fishermen, current is everything when targeting brown fish. By contrast, it's a rare occasion that a lazy green fish will be found in fast moving water. I catch them there once in awhile, but I think they're just lost or confused! 8-) Quote
Justin Mahaney Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 I agree, however its easier to find large smallies in deeper water where as I find I have more luck pulling out lunker largemouths out of structure and cover near shallow water and/or backwater areas/bays which have much less fishing pressure than your average smallmouth holes. bass wrangler569 Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Smallmouth fight way harder. I've caught 15" smallies that fought harder than any 6 or 7lb largemouth that I've ever caught. Quote
simplejoe Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 I like the way smallies fight you the whole way to the boat, I mean a largemouth does it to but not like a fat smallie. I think there both fun to catch Quote
TournyFish001 Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 I enjoy both species very much and I am lucky where I fish because there are really good numbers of each. The tactics and location differ but that is what makes it so fun- as far as the fight- yeah a smallie is gunna win a UFC battle over a Largemouth pound for pound- but I get just as big of a rush pulling in a 4lb Largemouth out of the water as a 4Lb Smallmouth. This makes me wanna go fishing in a major way- Quote
