Super User roadwarrior Posted June 11, 2008 Super User Posted June 11, 2008 ...but i can't imagin them being that much stronger If you tied a 4 lb smallmouth to the tail of an 8 lb largemouth, the brown fish would drown the green fish and drag it around the lake like a boat pulling a boogie board! Largemouth are usually landed in a minute or two. Smallmouth are just half done the first time they see the boat. Brown fish never give up. 8-) Quote
BassinSoldier Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Being from Florida originally I still love a big ol' bucketmouth, but...Moving to Ft. Campbell, KY and having caught a few really nice smallies on KY Lake (4-6lb range) I gotta go with the ol' bronzeback for the fight. I feel like I am cheating on my wife saying that, lol! Anyway, I guess I am kinda addicted to the smallies and I try to target them when I can on KY Lake. Quote
thetr20one Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Fish Erie and get into some open water smallies and you will quickly find out getting them to the boat is a real challenge. At 25-30 feet deep sometimes they will come to the surface twice as fast as you can reel a 7.1-1 reel would make no difference. The you can watch that brown missle come out of the water often throwing your bait. The thing about Erie fishing can be kinda boring until you set the hook and then it's game on. A person who is not used to these fish often loses more than they catch. There are tricks that I can't divulge but once you get it you got it. My PB largemouth is 6 1/2 and I have caught more over 5 than I can count but not one has fought nearly as hard as any smallie over 4. Case in point I went with mydogdamit sunday and caught 4 largemouth 3-5 pounds and not a single one made runs or acrobatics like the three pound smallie I also caught. You can look on the my tournament or outing threads and check out the "bet I wish I lost" thread and see the smallie that out muscled all of the largemouth in those pics. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted June 12, 2008 Super User Posted June 12, 2008 There are tricks that I can't divulge but once you get it you got it. WHAT! Okay, here is the #1 trick: If you are fishing single hooks, use a Medium Power/ Fast Action spinning rig with a drag you can depend on. When a smallmouth first sees your boat, she will bolt, everytime! You really need equipment you can count on. 8-) Quote
Super User FishTank Posted June 13, 2008 Super User Posted June 13, 2008 I have to go with smallmouth. I hooked a 4lb last year and thought I had largemouth at least twice that size on the line. The fish would just not stop fighting. Quote

Mrs. Matstone Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Well I like fishing for both but I would have to say that a smallmouth fights much harder. ;D Quote
Man?orAstroman? Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Excuse me for showing my ignorance, but do they have smallies in Florida? I have only caught largemouth bass my entire life. Well, that and pan fish and gar. Quote
Super User Jimzee Posted June 13, 2008 Super User Posted June 13, 2008 Been doing quite a bit of smallie fishing lately. Man, they pull so hard. I keep a smile on my face all day long in disbelief how a 14-18 inch fish can strip drag like that. Pound for pound, they can't be beat! Quote

Super User islandbass Posted June 13, 2008 Super User Posted June 13, 2008 wow everone likes smallies better. I got to go with largemouths just because thats all i've caught. but i can't imagin them being that much stronger That is what I thought until I caught my first smallie. I changed my tune instantly. Matter of fact I didn't target largemouth for the next 3 months. Smallies for sure, not taking anything away from the largemouth. Love'em too, but pound for pound, the smallie has it all over the largie for fight quality. They just don't quit. Can't wait until you hook into your first smallie. You too will see. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted June 13, 2008 Super User Posted June 13, 2008 Never fished for smallmouth, I will have to give them a shot. Quote
wagn Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 smallies do fight harder. However I personally prefer fishing for Largemmouth. I like the act of targetting lillypads under docks, and fishing in timber. Largemouths tend to hang out more in the junk, and that's what i like fishing. Although I had the opportunity this past week to fish a lake that has a large number of both smallies and Largemouths. It was a lot of fun. With over 40 fish caught in the week you never knew what you were going to pull out of the water. Quote
Big-O Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 For me it would be THE Smallmouth Bass with the largest mouth. Big O www.ragetail.com Quote
Ky_Lake_Dude Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 Smallies fight harder. I'd take a day on Dale Hollow any day. heck yea! lol Quote
TommyBass Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 Smallies do fight harder, but I feel the techniques and styles of fishing for LM are much funner. Smallies are almost "dumb" sometimes and will bite about anyting, much like crappie. I think LM are a harder challenge and can be more rewarding to catch. Pound for pound smalls def fight harder, but the problem is they arnt pound for pound... a 6lb smallie is an absolute giant and 6lb LM just averagely big. You dont really get chances to catch smallies to the sizes that huge LM grow, and I would bet that a large LM is a better fight then a larger SM. Hook both world records up at the same time and lets see who wins : ) Quote

Most HUGE largemouth are landed in a minute or three at the most. That will NEVER happen with a 5 lb smallmouth. 8-) Quote
fishfearme Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Smallmouths for sure...........If got 5lb smallie on you better hold on Quote
Super User South FLA Posted June 17, 2008 Super User Posted June 17, 2008 1. Peacock Bass 2. Smallmouth Bass 3. Largemouth Bass Quote
Dangle Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 I have only caught a few small mouth, but i can say the ones i caught fought 2 times harder than largemouths there size. Quote
