As you may already know, the rain has been comming down in buckets here in the Mid-west for last several weeks.  I fished a tournament last saturday on a lake where the visability was 2-4" all around the lake and 4-6" at the dam.  After 8 hours of fishing I wasn't lucky enough to hit one on the head and blanked as did almost all of the guys in our club (3 people caught fish out of 16).

My question is, there was some talk that the fish would pull out in deeper water during real muddy conditions as the water would be clearer there as opposed to the shallower water.  I have never heard this and wonder if anyone has any thoughts on this.  BTW, the four fish caught were all taken within 2-4' of the bank.

Depending on the season as always I tend to move shallow as the fish that are shallow will move tight to any cover available. By tight I mean that your presentation needs to rub the bark on the way down. If it is a jig I will fish one that has a rattle, a worm that has a rattle, a SB with large colorado blades to displace as much water as possible and to slow way down. Soak the bait if possible.

Shad_Master, I've been stuck fishing muddy water throughout the Spring and up to now as well.  I know sometimes the upper end can be muddy and the lower end is clearer because the muddy water flows into the creek and river mouths first.  Also, there is more water to dilute the mud particles on the lower end.  There have been times when I've been able to fish main lake points on the lower end that were much clearer; however, with the amount of rain we've had this year the lakes I'm fishing are muddy from end to end and I would bet the same applies to you since you're 150 miles or so north of me.  What fishfordollars stated has been true for me.  I have found the most success pitching tubes and jigs extremely tight to cover.  I have not had much success with spinnerbaits in the truly muddy water this year.
