Also, in deeper water associated with structure. In a pond I fish, the larger bass patrol a ledge off the bank 8-12 yards. I occasionally find a few in the channel of the original stream, but this is not a feature of many ponds.

I would agree that they would seek an area with the highest oxygen levels or the cooler water. It's possible that they haven't gone anywhere, it's just very tough to get them to bite.
