jay29 Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 I have decided to get involved in fishing, specifically bass fishing. I live in upstate NY, Broome County. I have about $100 for an open headed reel and rod, not including everything else. I need a good beginners set up. Also, I have no clue what to use for lures and baits as well as what weight/color of the fishing line.. Also, any upstate NYs know of any good fishing spots that are popular? Thanks for helping this newbie. Jay 8-) Quote
Popeye Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Welcome to the BR Forums - the PREMIER bass fishing site on the Net, IMO. You certainly have come to the RIGHT place to have all your questions answered! First off, you should read ALL the Beginner's Articles already available on BR. Then I'd recommend that you spend some time reading the other forums called Fishng Rods, Reels, and Line and Fishing Tackle. Most of your questions will be answered there. Quote

TheBeast Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Best advice, turn back now before it's to late and you get attacked by the BaitMonkey and find yourself telling the wife "I have to have a $400-$500 rod and reel combo". Quote

Little Luey Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Welcome to the forum and to bass fishing. One thing I can tell you is to practice fishing one technic at the time, I know for me there are way too many ways to catch fish, learn 2-3 and practice, practice and then practice some more. Once you can consistently catch bass on those 2-3 technics you can move on in to something else. You also need to have lots of patiance while practicing, try to improve everytime you are in the water. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted May 23, 2008 Super User Posted May 23, 2008 WELCOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quote
BirdNestBen Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Man once you hang that first big Bass you're hooked!!!!!!! There are a lot of good open faced baitcasters, but most are expensive... like the Revo STX.... I've got a Shimano Calcutta for my baitcaster... and a Pflueger President for my Spinning reel..... which I gave about 40 bucks for... and I've caught a lot more fish on the Pflueger... 100 bucks is a tight budget... maybe you could find 1 baitcaster and a spinning reel???? anyways just a suggestion..... As far as tackle... let's see you'll get a lot of advice here.... but for me I usually catch the fish on the same stuff over and over.... Zoom Super fluke....* Berkley Powerworm...* Pop-R.... Zoom Baby Brush Hog Senko-* wacky rigged or texas rigged weightless Zara spook Gene Larew Craw-worm Rat-l-trap Crankbaits- deep, mid, and shallow runners... Quote
little_stephen Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 I was in your shoes once, but I just started buying stuff... lol. didnt bother to ask anyone. When it comes down to a good begining level reel. I got my pflueger President on sale at Gander Mountian for under 40$ i do recal. And Id go with a Gander Mt. Guide Series Rod, theyre really cheap.....really nice, and I havent had any problems with mine yet. but I mean You cant go wrong with a good old ugly stick, those things can take a BEATING. I absolutely LOVE Berkley Trilene Maxx line. the stuffs strong, relatively decently priced. U'll learn alot being on here. I already have. Quote
stilldontlikeyou Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 Welcome aboard!!! I was in your shoes this time last year as a matter of fact. Go out and buy a variety type box for fresh water fishing. You can find them at Bass Pro, Dicks, I think Wal-Mart....It has worms, cheap spinners, buzz baits, lizards, and lots of other stuff. Some of the stuff isn't the best but it will get you started. You will become comfortable with certain baits, if your tie your knots wrong and cast your spinner and see it flying 50 feet and then sinking ;D it'll be ok because you didn't drop 5-6 bucks on it. I think I paid 15-20 for a nice little started kit. My best success so far has been with plastic worms. Stay on the forums here, this is where I pretty much learned most of what I know. Great group of people always willing to help, and the knowledge here is amazing. Welcome to the sport!! Quote
bass wrangler569 Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 Take a look at a pflueger president/extreme combo at bass pro shop. They are $20 over your budget but they are worth it. They are great reels/rods to start with. http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_59170_100003002_100000000_100003000_100-3-2 One of the best lures for a beginner to start with are senkos IMO. Try the watermelon or green pumpkin colors. http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_58909_100007007_100000000_100007000_100-7-7 You will find plenty of information about fishing the senko on this forum. Just type senko in to the search area. Quote
