dman Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 Heys guys, I fish a small pond on my lunch break from work all the time...So far spring has been active...Ive caught a lot of smaller bass in the 12-15" range...Lots of bluegills and Bass swimming around and the pre-spawn started last week with the males on the beds and some big fat females very close by....But I thought it was strange last week when i started seeing some dead bluegill' just laying on the bottom or floating at shore....When i went there yesterday there was dead Bluegill and Crappie all over the place, there was also a stench of urine (?)...A lot of them looked like a fungus or something around their mouths....Didnt see any dead bass but didnt see them swimming around either like i was....The beds were completely abandoned and cant see anything swimming around any longer....I always catch at least a few and this time not a bite. very strange Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted May 13, 2008 Super User Posted May 13, 2008 Likely too early in the season for an oxygen issue. Maybe a spill? Quote
Big-O Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 Hopefully not but %#&^> runs down hill. If you smelled the same thing all around, possibly broken sewage line or septic system running to your pond. Let's hope not! Big O Quote
Shad_Master Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 I don't know about the urine smell - but a similar thing happened to a pond that used to fish a lot - it is near a housing development and was a place where lots of residents would go for walks in the morning and evening - a couple of years ago they got the city to spray to "kill the weeds and reduce the scum" on the pond. Since then the fishing has been lousy - one lady came up to me and was bragging about how nice the pond looked since they had it sprayed - I almost threw her in the water. Quote
Super User Marty Posted May 13, 2008 Super User Posted May 13, 2008 I'd call the local office of your DNR. Quote
BirdNestBen Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 it's not good... a local pond owner put some chemicals in his pond to reduce the weeds... killed all the fish!!!!!!!!!!! I hope it's not chemicals in there...... Quote
Davis Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 it's not good... a local pond owner put some chemicals in his pond to reduce the weeds... killed all the fish!!!!!!!!!!! I hope it's not chemicals in there...... What are you talking about? Out of curiosity how do you know that? Do you know the place he is speaking of? My dad has been putting chemicals in to kill the weeds some years and it hasn't done a darn thing except kill off the cover for some of the bass. We never have seen any fish floating or dead on the bottom. Quote
JCrzy4Bass Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 With some of those chemicals I'd imagine there may be such a thing as "too much"? Isn't there guidelines set forth as far as what you're suppossed to use and in what kind of quantity, so forth? Anyway, I'd take Marty's advice and give that place a call. They are most helpful when I call about the ponds in my area. They have even done some stuff to control the beaver population at one I fish. Wouldn't have happend if people hadn't made calls. Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted May 16, 2008 Super User Posted May 16, 2008 You might have the water authority to check it out. It illegal to treat or add anything to the water without a permit. Even if it is a sewage leak or other problem someone could be liable. Get it checked out or at least let someone with authority know. Quote
