Damien Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 I acctually just thought of this tonight while i was fishing.... Is bug spray harmful to bass I had a bad bug problem tonight so i sprayed some on like normal and on my hands to get around my face, right after that my next cast i caught a smaller sized bass good hook set and all, liped it unhooked it and dropped it in the water and it started to float belly up for a second then caught its self and took off... could it have been the spray????? jdw174 Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 I have heard that repellent that uses DEET as an ingredient can actually repel fish. Keep it away from your lure just in case. Quote
SenkoBasser Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 I'd say unless your hands are litterally dripping with bug spray, or, you actually spray the bass in the face with it, you're all set. You may have had him out of the water a tad too long or he was just tired from the fight and needed to catch his bearings. I'll usually set them back in (not throw) and move them forward, back, then forward again. That dog'll hunt. Quote
Super User Micro Posted May 5, 2008 Super User Posted May 5, 2008 Your spray probably did not do that. But keep in mind that any insecticide that contains pyrethrin is HIGHLY toxic to fish. I'm not sure if OFF! or Cutter has pyrethins or not. But most insecticides like Raid and Black Flag, and including most tick and flea shampoos for dogs, contain pyrethrin. Pyrethin is a nerve agent that comes from flowers and is inert to mammals but highly toxic to insects and fish. Quote
Super User Tin Posted May 5, 2008 Super User Posted May 5, 2008 Not sure but never spray it near your electronics. Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted May 5, 2008 Super User Posted May 5, 2008 Not likely. That fish was just "confused", for lack of a better word. Once he came to, he took off. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted May 5, 2008 Super User Posted May 5, 2008 A buddy of mine uses the towel that you add to the dryer to soften the clothes he hangs it on the rear of his hat. I use a good cigar when it gets really bad... Quote
Super User fishinfiend Posted May 6, 2008 Super User Posted May 6, 2008 keep that away from plastic and vinyl as it can destroy it Another good tip: Never ever put a dip in or smoke if you have that crap on your fingers because you will taste it for a very, very long time. Quote

LOL and your lips go numb... i have done it a couple times Quote
JerseyBassin Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 yea everyone else pretty much answered this question it can't be good for the fish, but i highly doubt it'll kill them Quote
George Welcome Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Our bass appreciate deet as it keeps the mosquitos from biting. They like a liberal application of suntan lotion also as it helps contain the advancement of cancer. http://npic.orst.edu/factsheets/DEETtech.pdf The problem with most areas of questionability is that most people would rather read the Readers Digest version to answer a question than the actual scientific studies performed. Again, my answer to the posed question is: NO! Quote
