Trick Worm Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 Ive seen people pull 6 and 7 pound bass out of my pond and personally have pulled a couple 5-6 lb'ers. When Im fishing I always see smaller bass crusing around but never any large ones. Is it possible that my pond has any large bass and if so how would I go about locating them? Quote
Nicky Greece Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 I used to fish alot of ponds and tended to stick to the BIG BAIT = BIG FISH theory. If theres any cover, try throwing a big jig towards it. Big Cranks usually work for me too. If its deep enough, try a Rapala DT-10. Has done me wonders on slow days. Quote
Pond-Pro Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 I would say that it is very likely for your pond to hold large bass. If you have seen some caught up to 7 pounds, there is probably some big ones in it. From my experience, spring time is best for catching the biggest bass from a pond. The big ones become more vulnerable when they spawn. I don't know if you use live bait, but you might try using a small live bluegill under a bobber or just free-lined. Also topwaters like buzzbaits work great for big bass. Good luck! Quote
BirdNestBen Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 I've caught most of my big bass in small lakes/ponds.... and you can catch them on a variety of lures.... But here are few of my favorites.... Gene Larew Craw worm Powerworm Electric Blue Senko Lunker Lure Buzzbait And if you really want a monster nothing delivers like the Zara Spook.... Quote
BassinBoy Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 To find out if you have big bass then catch a bluegill, and put it in the water and let it swim around(still on your line of course). This will bring the biggest bass in the pond up. They let off distress noises and it brings up the biggest bass. Catching them require big baits and after that it is just a matter of getting the bait infront of the bass. Try it youll be happy to see the big ones i promise! You will find the biggest and most dominate bass in the entire pond! Quote
streamer Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 I caught my PB from a pond of less than an acre. As said above, the spawn makes em vulnerable. Find a bed in the shallows and throw at it. Good luck Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted May 5, 2008 Super User Posted May 5, 2008 a 6 inch manns purple jelly worm caught my biggest bass of my life 10-4 out of a med sized pond .ponds are fun to fish over the years i have figured out a good pattern on ponds ALL of my big bass have came from water less then 5 foot deep and ALL of the big bass were aggresive IF the bass are aggressive anything will work look for cover and stay alert big bass move steahlty but they cant hide that black tipped tail sight fishing works on ponds very well Quote
Daniel My Brother Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 I'll say ditto to the live bluegill trick. You wouldn't catch me throwing a deep diving crankbait from the bank...too many hangups, to hard to retrieve. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted May 5, 2008 Super User Posted May 5, 2008 Fishing for large bass in small places isn't hard to do you just need to be very stealthy and fish at dawn or in the evenings. I prefer dawn just before first light the place is calmed down and very quiet except for the occasional surface burst(bass). You need to be very very stealthy at this time too the bigger bas are very spooky too. The big bass are right against the shore at this time ambushing bait. Walk softly too. As it gets lighter they go deeper into there heavy cover for the day.(sometimes) I have seen the larger bass show up during a frenzy with the smaller bass but they won't strike. Now if the smaller bass are striking and it slows down go to a larger sized bait. Then if nothing happens just change colors of the same bait. I'm fishing from shore most of the time and i walk softly and don't step on any rocks while walking too. Becareful with your tackle too. It has to be very quiet like your not there to sneak up on the bigger fish, there smart because they got that big..... ;D I was watching a large bass tearing up the lilly's and threw my BPS topnocker out there past it and brought it right by the fish about 6' away from it so i didn't spook it. I landed a 6lb1oz bass and while it was in my hands i watched the lilly's still being torn up with another big bass. My point is be quiet when you land a larger bass too there just maybe another one nearby..... I think we have more large bass than people think, there just not being caught.
