lknbassman Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 Absolutely it's affecting it. I live on Lake Norman in NC and it's a pretty big reservoir. Fishing it effectively requires patterning fish and finding them just like anywhere else and riding around costs money as of late, lots of it. I dropped $150 to fill up my TR21X HP just last week and I'm only driving a short distance to the boat ramp as I keep the bass boat on a trailer and the other boat on a lift just so I don't have to pay for gas on the lake. It's close to $5!!!!!!! This is ridiculous and is way past getting out of hand. So much for an election year helping out with the economy........ Quote
wagn Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 There are so many nice ponds within an hour of me that I never have to go very far anyway. Gas is just another reason I love only having a 25hp and a small boat. I don't drive far because of gas concerns but more because it cuts into fishing time Quote
Joel W Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Since I fish the NYC reservoir system with boats on 3 reservoirs, I'm pretty much locked in to my 3 hour weekly round trip. My "partner in crime" lives a lot closer, but not anywhere near enough to my driving route where we could meet and drive up together. As for work, that's a min of 45 min each way depending on the traffic, and there's plenty of it on the LIE. Right now we still making ends meet, but with $4/gal right around the corner and no end in sight, late summer right through the fall season should be real interesting. And I don't even want to think about what home heating oil will be costing come the fall. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted April 22, 2008 Super User Posted April 22, 2008 I've actually been fishing Coyote much more lately, huge fish in there (I've yet to catch one of those ) but it's only 15 minutes from home. 9 mpg in the H2 is just silly. > Quote
Branuss04 Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 I've already warned my gf that the more gas goes up, the less I can spend on her so I can still afford to go fishing ;D. I slept on the couch that night, and the next night, on so on . It's worth it though!!! Quote
Big T Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 That's why I'm telling y'all split the cost 50-50; gas at $3.27 is now $1.635 I've got partners who can go at the drop of a hat & they'll drop the hat Catt is right this is exactly what we use to do back when my friends and I were King Mackeral fsihing offshore years ago. It was nothing to burn 30 to 40 gallons of fule on calm day. Quote
Big T Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Luckily for me, I live about 10 to 15 min from work and it's about the same for fishing. So, I don't let it stop me from taking road trips. 10 minutes to Sutton Lake- maybe 7-8 miles 5 minutes to Wrightsville Beach. It is those trips to Carolina Beach that kills me 30 minute drive with weekend traffic. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted April 22, 2008 Super User Posted April 22, 2008 I'm on my 4th tournament on the same $20 gas that I put in on the way to the 1st tourny. My 90 Merc Optimax gets very good mileage. Quote
Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted April 22, 2008 Super User Posted April 22, 2008 In the past I have normally made 3 or 4 "day" or weekend fishing trips a year. (100-400 miles one way) I haven't made one of those in two years now and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Last year I even installed a hitch on my 4 banger Accord to haul my little boat around, It was getting to be a pain to borrow my dad's truck and fill it back up everytime .... especially when it really wasn't needed to haul my little boat. Quote
Pitchinkid Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Price of gas is alot like the price of snuff to me. if skoal is $10 a can im still paying it. if it cost me $10 a galllon to go fishin im still paying it. why? its just that important to me. Quote
New Bass Man Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Well I fish and get gas on a military installation. So I'm combining trips. Quote
Quinn Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 I've already warned my gf that the more gas goes up, the less I can spend on her so I can still afford to go fishing ;D. I slept on the couch that night, and the next night, on so on . It's worth it though!!! I maried my gf so I would have to crunch the numbers to see if a divorce would justify the cost of fishing away from home ;D I love her, she will fish with me but not as interested in trips to do it. Quote
Mike 12345 Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 i always have the money to put gas in my truck to go fishing, its finding the money to put gas in my truck to get to work thats causing a problem ;D Ain't that the truth? Quote
clipper Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 Not only does the price of gas affect where I fish, it also reduced the number of 2 hour trips I took to deer camp last year >. If all these folks that drive SUVs would get a Honda, it would reduce the demand for and then the price of gas and I could afford to drive my F-150 ;D. I wouldn't even mind if they cut the speed limit back to 55 like they did in the 70s to reduce demand for gas. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted April 23, 2008 Author Super User Posted April 23, 2008 it also reduced the number of 2 hour trips I took to deer camp last year >. Try five hour trips to deer camp. Five years ago I made the trip three to four times a season. The last two years I've only made one trip. Quote
Big-O Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 Don't live near a lake or river system but I have a swimming pool! Hmmmm... de clorinate, stock bait fish, stock Bass. Wow, then I could fish 24 hrs a day and never have to leave my back porch. Oh..... but then I would be around the house more and have to do more chores .....Scratch that idea, I'll just pay for the gas. Big O www.ragetail.com Quote
toolpush Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 the oil companies pay performance and safety bonus's on the wells we drill for them. this is my fishing money. my only problem is i get 5 days off a month in a row its hard to please the wife and fish monkey both. the fish monkey usually wins though. Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted April 23, 2008 Super User Posted April 23, 2008 I will continue as I have been doing, just staying instead of driving back and forth. Quote
Rattlinrogue Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 I pretty much fish within 30 miles or so of my home,so I'm good.Also I fish smaller(500 or less) lakes,and I use a 25 HP Yamamha.Gas is not a problem with me...yet. Quote
snyper77 Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 There's 2 or 3 good places to fish within 35 miles, which isn't too bad. What I'm concerned about is I have 2 sons (ages 8 and 11). I want to take them tubing and swimming. The nearest lake for such activities would be about 125 miles (round trip) + gas for the boat to pull the tube up and down the lake. It's just REDICULOUS when it costs $100 for gas, just to take your kids to the lake to ride a tube. Quote
B-Ass-Mad Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 Glad I bought an aluminium boat with a 40 yamaha! When gas hits $9 gal in 5 years time then I'll worry about it. The day of the 5 litre truck it coming to an end!! Quote
Bassnajr Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 I just bought a 21' Procraft DC 205 with my buddy. I used to play golf....talk about spending money. Bass fishing is all I do now. So, no, I will not be detered by the cost of fuel. It is the one sport or hobby that I have left out of them all I used to do before I got hurt in a car accident. That having been said, there is absolutley no reason why gas should be $3.50 a gallon in this country. We have men and women dying in the Middle East to "free" these countires and introduced democracy. We spend BILLIONS re-building what we blew up, and we still pay outrageous gas prices. This is how our country is rewarded by these animals!! > It's BULL CRAP!!!!! OK, I vented!! ajr Quote
simplejoe Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 Gas prices are killing me and my business. We have a camp about an hour north of us and I think I might sell it this year > > my kids will be ticked off they love it up there and so do I, we used to go up there every weekend but now I not to sure what were doing. My wife's Land Rover and my van are both gas hogs time to buy a VW, all the places I fish now are all within 5 miles for me Quote
