Super User burleytog Posted April 21, 2008 Super User Posted April 21, 2008 How are the $3.50+ per gallon prices for gasoline affecting your fishing habits? Are you staying closer to home, fishing the smaller lakes? Or do you not care? Willing to pay whatever it takes to spend a day on the lake? Quote
thetr20one Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 I will cut back on other things if it comes down to it. I usually have someone along that splits the fuel cost. When I go alone it's to close lakes. I am lucky to live 10 minutes or less to the Portage Lakes in Ohio, and really close to Lake Erie and alot of other good lakes. I would support a boycott of oil companies honestly, if it would drive the price of gas down. There is no way of that happening though to many people and businesses. Hey the president of Iran thinks oil is still too cheap so whats next? Quote
Red Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 i always have the money to put gas in my truck to go fishing, its finding the money to put gas in my truck to get to work thats causing a problem ;D Quote
Super User FishTank Posted April 21, 2008 Super User Posted April 21, 2008 I live close to several ponds where I can use a john boat or fish from the bank but I will not be going on to many long trips this year to fish. Several people I fish with have cut back on their travel to major lakes this year. They just can't afford it. One guy I work with said his bass club is going to three man teams instead of two during tournaments. Most of the guys have large diesel trucks that get about 10 miles to the gallon and can't afford to spend about $150 bucks on gas for one day of fishing. Quote
Bassnbrett101 Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 I think I'm gonna spend less on gas to get places to go fun fishing. but just as much to get to my tournaments. For me tournaments are alot of fun and Idt that i'll be able to miss out on that Quote
Bass Smacker Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 i always have the money to put gas in my truck to go fishing, its finding the money to put gas in my truck to get to work thats causing a problem ;D X2 Quote
CL Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 i'll be staying closer to home, not because of gas, because i don't want to waste time on the road for time i could be fishing. if there was a lake i just had to go to, then maybe. but there are so many good ones within an hour around me. 2+ hours would be a "trip" to me, that may only happen once or twice this year. Quote
NinjaFishin Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 I'd say its unlikely I will cut back on fishing trips, however I will probably be asking for more gas money from my friends who come with me. ;D The mileage on my Jeep is terrible but its the only vehicle available that will take me and 3 friends + gear :-/ Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 What timing,...I bought a 4 runner yesterday. I'm going from my go-Kart 4cyl 5-speed jetta to a 6 cyl luxury cruiser. We were discussing lakes closer to home while on the water yesterday, another option in the discussion was packing the goods and camping at the lake for the weekends instead of making the routine 4 trips/weekend. JShrock07 Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 Money is starting to really get tight with all the tournaments to be fished and all the prefishing. I live about 45min to an hour away from the closest river and I drive a diesal truck. Just last week both my truck and my boat were on empty and it costed me $250.00 to fill up. So I am starting to just wait it out until the weather is just right and I can feel confident I'll actually do some good. Quote
Super User Catt Posted April 21, 2008 Super User Posted April 21, 2008 That's why I'm telling y'all split the cost 50-50; gas at $3.27 is now $1.635 I've got partners who can go at the drop of a hat & they'll drop the hat Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 Catt, we kind of do the same. We meet at Erics dads house, where we keep the boats and we will take 1 car from there, alternating each trip. The issue is, even then, I am driving 20 miles to dads house and then another 20 to the lake at least 3-4 times a week. Still adds up, especially on weekends when I go there and back twice a day, that's 320 miles/weekend. I already own 2 tents, 2 air mattresses and enough propane accessories for Emiril to cook a 5 course meal in a hurricane,..... at night. I need to find a spot on the lake where I can set up camp and not be illegal or intrusive to the residents,....or start to make some of those trips to some of the closer lakes. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted April 21, 2008 Super User Posted April 21, 2008 No long distance fishing trips for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quote

Just bought a tent myself. I'm also looking for a 14 foot semi-V. The days of dragging a large bass boat around just to fish small waters is over for me as well as the 4 trips weekend. Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 Someone needs to invent a motor that runs on used plastics Quote
Super User Jimzee Posted April 21, 2008 Super User Posted April 21, 2008 I'll be fishing more electric lakes this year. I have already found myself running down the lake at only half throttle. Seems like it's not so hard on gas that way. Quote
slomoe Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 Since I don't own a boat, and drive a pretty gas friendly car, I'll usually pay whatever it takes to get to big fish from shore. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted April 21, 2008 Super User Posted April 21, 2008 I usually fish the small lakes and ponds around my house. I don't get down to the big lakes that much, probably once or twice a year, so It would be part of the trip for me. Quote
ba7ss3in Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 Luckily for me, I live about 10 to 15 min from work and it's about the same for fishing. So, I don't let it stop me from taking road trips. Quote
Just_Old_Fisherman Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 I am lucky that my primary lake is 5 mi from my driveway. I also don't run around on the lake as much as I used to. LBH---Maybe if you would be more intrusive to the residents they might just ask you in and save having to tote that camping stuff. Quote
TheBeast Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 Like I said in another thread Burley, we are blessed that we are fairly close to some decent small lakes and have an abundance of ponds that are just made for the jon or canoe. Speaking of ponds I found a couple more yesterday. Quote

Popeye Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 Fortunately I carpool with my neighbor to work so my Explorer sits dormant in the driveway waiting to be hooked up to my boat for the 15 minute drive to Otay where I fish most of the time. IF I had to, I'd bicycle to and from work to save the gas for fishing trips. I used to ride 250 - 300 miles a week on my bike and although I might not be as fast as I was back then, I think I could handle the mileage with a little effort and less cerveza!! Most of the good bass lakes in San Diego county are only about 30 minutes away from my home anyway. Lucky I guess:o) Quote
=Matt 5.0= Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 I'm going fishing no matter what. We will just cut corners elsewhere. I'm fortunate enough to live 2 miles from work, so the weekdays don't kill me. I've thought about riding my bike to work now that it's getting nice out. During WW2 my great grandfather would ride his bike to work, and ration his gas coupons so that he could go fishing on the weekends. Quote
jt236 Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 Our club decided back in the winter that our tournaments would stay within an hour and a half drive one way.Only one a month not that bad when you split the cost.As for just fishing locally I have two rivers and a lake close by the price won't stop me from doing what I enjoy.
