how would you fish this pond??? (pics)

ok i need some big help with this pond.

last year about this time i caught my 7lb pb bass out of here. i went there on a reccomendation of a friend who also had caught a 7lber and many 5's and 6's in there. so i know it holds big fish (those are big for my area).

problem is, out of all the many times i have returned, i have only caught about 3 dinks since then.

its very shallow around the edges (you can kinda see it, the darker flats on the south side and some smaller flats on the north side) and they are less than a foot deep. i caught my 7lber on one of these flats, and i could see it fanning, so im guessing it was spawning.

you can kinda see where it gets deep, but its not even that deep, im not sure how deep but definitley 6-8 feet at the deepest.

so could you guys give me some advice on how to fish this pond??? like maybe where the bass would be and what lures would work well...also, what can you tell about the geography of the lake based on this photo?

I'd fish the holes this time of year with a creature bait or a jig.  But if its warmer now the fish might actually be staged so a rattletrap or spinnerbait would probably work well too.  But if they aren't on the flats thats what I would do

Well usually there is at least few fish cruising the flats. I try to get those fish with rattletraps and spinnerbaits. Other then that, I would fish the deeper water with a jig.

Anytime the wind is blowing into that lower right hand corner I would be there throwing Double willow spinnerbaits,lip-less cranks or a fluke type bait..

I would also try 2 other things. That area on the bottom f the photo, where you can see where the flat gets deeper, and there are potins. I would use a t rig or a jig head with a traler on it up that drop off and then across the flats.

Looks like the deeper area narrows down a bit at the north central part of the pond. I would treat that as a ditch or creek bed.

Hey I fish a pond with an area like that, can you explain that more? What would you throw there?

lol anytime i'm fishing a pond and i see an area that has shallower water all around it I call it a "hole" it might not be correct terminology.  But i mean the deeper water

Throw a jig right in the middle of that pool dead center of the pond. That'll land you some.

Alot of guys throw deep diving cranks in there but it can be hard. You gotta get a good mental picture of how the bottom looks so you can cast and keep the bait running in or along the channel. Drop shotting is and easy way to fish it vertically. Jigs work great too. Many of us here will admit that our deep water game needs serious help. You have to fish blind which is hard to learn. Being from Michigan and having to look for bass in 30 feet of crystalline water has helped me personally with this but I can see how a devoted structure guy would have problems. Heck, I'll take a laydown on the bank over a deep structure any day but thats just me (along with about 90% of this forum lol).

first a question.  i know you put your 7 lb. bass back dave, but did the other people release the other big fish you talked about?  it don't matter how many big fish are in there -  if people are keeping them soon there won't be any.  

i'm assuming your goal is to catch a big fish out of there again (maybe your 7 again now that she's 7.5 or 8 this year )

i'd check your water temps.  if they are at or close to 60, i'd bust out the polarized glasses for some sight fishin'.  the full moon is right around the corner so bed fishin' should be ON!!!!  other guys have given you some great advice, but i'd take a walk around the pond and just look carefully every time i went before i even picked up a rod.  you may just see ms. BIG sittin' there on a nest.

anyway, thanks for all the tips guys. im goin here saturday and hopefully i will come back with a good report.

i see the spots where the flats "drop off" into deeper water (which isnt really that deep), but the thing is i cant cast to those spots from shore (i dont think...) and there is no boats allowed in this pond, so those spots might be hard to reach.

The shallow ponds that I fish have bigger bass too.  I catch most of my fish in the deeper parts.  Try different lures and techniques where you think it is deep.

Black Zoom Trick Worm fished weightless on a 3/0 hook.  Throw it in the shallows and let it sink.  Twitch it a time or two and let it sink again.  Try it and if it doesn't work I will buy them back from you.

I'm gonna go ahead and catch the flame for this one but, have you ever tried a rooster tail on that pond? I find that when you just don't know what the hell to throw you will ALWAYS get bit on a rooster tail. Go with a bigger size so you discourage all but the bruiser bream and crappie. Went to Guntersville Lake last week for a conference and couldn't get bit on anything I took. Nearly threw in a buddy of mine for raping the bass with a tiny chartreuse rooster tail! I hate those baits as I feel like it's akin to using a snoopy rod and a worm, but the dang things just work!
