Matt Jungblut Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 i found a sand pit pond that is about 5 yrs old i caught 4 bass from 16 inches to 17 1\2 inches my question is what do u think the biggest bass in there will be im guessing probally 5 lbs since its in iowa and our growing season isnt as long as some others i figured a pound a year i was wondering what u guys thought from what i was told theres bluegils and crappie maybe catfish Quote
Pond Hopper Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 A pound a year is too much to expect out of an Iowa body of water. I would say the larger fish you are catching are the oldest year class in there. Normally I have noticed about .5lb to .75lb per year with the high end being less common. Quote
BassinBoy Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 I would bet that pond has some big bass in it. Maby not a pound a year because the way a bass grows is a spert when its young then slows down. My geuss with the size bass you caught, 3 or 4 pounds would be the biggest. Sounds like a good pond to me. You probobly caught some of the bigger bass in the pond. Keep fishing it and let us know how you do. Quote
Rayraff Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 I've caught a 8lb bass in a pond that was stocked 10 years ago and I have seen bigger. There were probably bass there before they stocked it if not that about .8 lb per year. Quote
BassinAssassin171 Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 you can never be sure until you fish it thoroughly, but I would say 5 and down. I'm no expert though, go read the articles on BR about bass biology and growing and stuff, they are really good Quote
Bassnbrett101 Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 I'd say about three to four pounds depending on the forage base. If its shad then closer to 4 if its bluegill close to three. Sounds like it could be a great little pond in a few years though! Quote
nick mack Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 I agree with "bassinassassin" you won't know for sure until you fish it a while but from the sounds of it you should be able to get a bunch of 5 pounders! Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted April 9, 2008 Super User Posted April 9, 2008 Maybe 5 lbs. but I doubt it. Quote
Bass_Akwards Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 Completely depends on forage base and many other factors. I'm no expert either, but I do know that you can have two darn near identical ponds, 50 yards away from each other, that were stocked at the same time, (say 10 years ago) and have a different average size, as well as a bigger top end. 1 pond might average 1.5 pound bass and the other might average 2 pounds. One might have a class of 5 pounders as the heaviest in the pond, and the pond right next to it might have 6 or 7 pounders as the heaviest. Quote

Thats it too, it really all depends on the forage base of a body of water. Thats why the fish in cali get so big, they feed them trout. I wish our state fed our fish trout, no i wish our fish were big enough to eat trout lol Quote
