I was sitting here looking at my boat longing for a break in the weather so I can get on the lake again. I haven't caught a bass since last October but I've tried any day it's not pouring sideways rain.

Anyway, I was thinking that I should just go trout fishing but I really yearn to try my luck again for bass.

My question is why do all of us get hooked on bass. They hook us so we can hook them????

Why do we spend all the time, effort and money to buy a boat with one purpose, spend usually an equal amount on tackle, drive sometimes for days to get to good bass water when we could just as easily go just down the road, catch some trout, catfish or whatever and probably with more success???

I'm just curious how we as otherwise normal people, get all googly eyed when even the word bass is mentioned???? It's all I want to do lately even though I'm usually not very good at it?

Is it just the great scenery, the bragging rights, or is it more subliminal?

I was at Wal-Mart the other day, met a guy behind the counter and he noticed I was buying some bass lures. We ended up having an hour long conversation (with people waiting behind me, lol) about bass fishing.

I live in some of the best salmon and sturgeon fishing in the country. I get 40 lb salmon in my backyard in the fall yet I would rather fish for bass. What makes all of us so crazy of bass??????????

Just something I was thinking about.

I'm an equal opportunity Hooker.  Anything with fins that's willing to jump on the hook and go for a drag is fair game in my book (within state laws of course)

I DO NOT discriminate!! :);)

A few thoughts:

1) They're the most widely distributed gamefish in North America, Mexico, Canada and 49 of our 50 states.

2) They fight reasonably well (LM) or very well (SM).

3) They (especially largemouth) tolerate a wide range of conditions.

4) They take any type of artificial lure imaginable.

5) They (LM) inhabit shallow water where most fishermen are most comfortable fishing, plus they're also available to shore anglers.

I don't know they just are my favorite to catch.I'm just gonna go with marty's answer.Because that's all true pretty much.

However i'm game for whatever else bites to be honest.

I will add my 2c since I just converted from trout fishing to Bass and was a deep sea lover when I was younger.

I went to Bass (still haven't caught any lol, but thats going to change rapidly, thanks to you guys and my obsession) for several reasons:

1. I love trout fishing but generally in my waters find power bait works the best and I just utterly hate bait fishing this way - its like TV outside - bores me to death.

2. Trout are fun, but in my area they are all planters and only available from late November - June, mostly only from March - June.  I want to be able to fish all year round whenever I can.

3. The lake closest to me only has Bass and the larger lakes near me are known for trophy bass that are really tough to catch.

Enough of the little stuff.

4. I want to catch fish that fight back - I want to put that fish back in the water thinking - "omg I really need a beer and a massage..."  I want to be "in the fighting chair" so to speak for as long as possible, I never want that battle to end.  I want to fight the hell out of every catch.

5. I want to see fish landed that are the same size as me someday - big fish sea fishing is high on my to do list.  While Bass won't really get that big they do get big enough to get my heart pounding.  This rush is what I wait for every time that bait hits the water.

6. Its the most common meaningful competitive fishing done in North America that I am aware of.

7. As I am finding out there is a terrific community around Bass fishing.

8. It is not a simple drop the line and wait game - it takes skill to master and this challenge is the core of the appeal.

Hope this adds something to the discussion.

I think it's like any other hobby or pasttime, we love it because it's an escape from reality and it gives us a chance to reflect. It could also be because of the constant oppurtunity you have to hook up to a lunker. The thrill and the possibility keeps us coming back. We will all have our own personal reasons as to why we love it, but they all get at the same thing.

I often wonder the same thing. I love everything about bass fishing, the scenery, the boats, the rods and reels, the lures and everything else it has to offer, i love it all.

Why is the Sky Blue?

:)

The sky is blue because molecules in the air scatter blue light from the sun more than they scatter red light.

I don't know why I answered that lol.

"The Horror, the Horror!" Actually I think the bass fishing addiction is related to the challenge it is to catch 'em, especially on lures and plastics. Same goes for Musky fisherman and any other species as far as that goes. IMO:o)

Plus:

6) Bass don 't need to have cold water in order to exist like trout. You tell me, I can fish for trout only in the highest part of the sierra but I can fish for bass practically in any puddle.

Just something I was thinking about.

When it comes to fishing, I have no prejudice... I want to catch them all!

I fish for multi-species, but for bass, they just have a special place in my heart. I prefer to target them probably 95% of the time. Are you in the Pacific Northwest, Oregon Perhaps? By your description, I was inclined to guess that with the mention of Sturgeon.

I can't quite put a finger on it myself, but good question.

I live on the coast and just can't get into saltwater fishing. I will fish for anything but the old LMB have the spot in my heart. They are not easy to catch
