Low_Budget_Hooker Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 With the spring influx of new members (welcome all!!), I've noticed a fair share of avatars with "prize catches". The sad thing is many of them are DEAD!! Just to give a quick education to those who may not realize it but folks here are kind of put off by those pics. Getting answers to your questions can be a bit more difficult when many of the top notch resource folks refuse to help anyone who is willing to kill bass. Now, I know the law allows you to do this and I'm not criticizing keeping your catch (within the laws), I'm just pointing out that "advertising" that this is how you roll, will very likely limit the help you receive.
Yakfish Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 Yeah, a kitchen shot is a sure fire way to make sure you get very few responses when you ask how to catch bigger and better bass. Not judging either but..... :-/

Please remember this in your reply if you have one. Thanks.
fishizzle Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 I don't think someones need to eat should effect others helping educate bass fisherman on all topics. If you are such a humanitarium maybe you should stop fishing for sport.

Brilliant observation and no, I'm not kidding. There are folks who will not help someone if they think they are just going to use the info to harvest fish. and yes, you too are invited to use the PM button if needed. Anyone else with nothing but an antagonistic response should also do the same please
fishizzle Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 Sorry, next time I'll bite my lip. There are alot of new members here and I am all about catch and release too.
Super User roadwarrior Posted April 7, 2008 Super User Posted April 7, 2008 Whoa! LBH was simply posting a helpful suggestion. No one on this board wants to see pictures of dead fish. He and I both like to eat some, fish, but we have a sincere appreciation of responsible harvesting.
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted April 7, 2008 Author Posted April 7, 2008 lol, Fishizzle and I had a simple miscommunication, it's resolved AGAIN,...this is just a suggestion for the newer members looking for replies. That's it, period, point blank. You can put up whatever avatar your heart pleases (within the rules) Onward we go.....
skeletor121 Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 LBH. Thanks for the suggestion. Hopefully my avatar won't cause people to not help me out with my quest for fish. The pic is of a Halibut I caught in May of 07 (in Alaska). I did catch, keep, and eat my limit that day (limit is 2 a day). I also kept and ate salmon while living up there in AK. While fishing down here I plan to catch and release the fish. I may end up keeping one here and there, but as of right now I am still trying to hook a bass right now! Days were too cold here and I was having trouble figuring out the freshwater fishing techniques. While those days were unproductive numbers wise (I think 0 counts as unproductive), it was great to get out and practice some techniques I have read on these pages.
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted April 7, 2008 Author Posted April 7, 2008 Nope, you'll be fine as long as you send a chunk of that bad boy to... LBH ClubHouse 43 main st East Greenwich, RI 02818 ;D
Super User Raul Posted April 7, 2008 Super User Posted April 7, 2008 The one in my avatar was alive n 'kickin, I cross my heart.
Super User grimlin Posted April 7, 2008 Super User Posted April 7, 2008 Maybe i missed something, but i do agree..dead fish in avatars kinda makes me go " :-X" when the person is asking how to catch bigger and more fish. I've given my share of fish away to some shore guys...doesn't bother me(sometimes).Only thing that bothers me is people don't take the time here to check and see what the limit is.It tells us right there in our little book we receive with our fishing license.
Zel Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 No bass were hurt or injured in the production of LBH's Avatar. It's image is purely fictional and any resemblance to any bass, living or dead, is coincidental. For those not in the know... it's just a CARTOON! :

Bassnbrett101 Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 I was wanted to stop by and say that LBH does make a good point. Granted I have killed a fish or two here and there. One averaged sized fish for a mount and a couple that didn't make it through tournaments (it doesn't happen that often I try my ver best to keep them alive). The mount looks great and now that I have one I won't be needing any more . but the fish that are accidentally killed in tournaments always get used the right way, never wasted. I hate when people waste their dead fish, it just hits a nerve with me.
btcprince Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 i bet i dont keep one for every 50 i catch. trust me i would rather catch a larger bass than a small one, and catch and release is the only way to ensure this. the last bass i kept was my 10lber i had mounted. i dont really feel guilty, as the fish did have years to contribute to the gene pool and populate the river. i do feel karma kicked me in the butt cuz i hit a bad dry spell shortly after, which in turn helped lead to my 6 year break from the sport. nowadays i would take measurements and have a replica done, or just settle for a good ol fashioned pic.
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted April 7, 2008 Author Posted April 7, 2008 This is not a catch & release vs. keep your catch thread, keep it on topic please.
Just_Old_Fisherman Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 There was a very good article in Bass Times about a year ago on Catch & Release. Bottom line was that in many places we have gone too far with it to the point it is hurting our fisheries. It stressed that keeping some of the smaller fish within size and number limits was BENEFICIAL. Let the biologist that set the limits and KNOW what they are doing be the experts----cause they are. So from my perspective, looking down on people that keep/kill some of their catch within limits is somewhat short sighted. Sometimes we bass fishermen should climb down off the pedestal/soap box we have placed ourself on.
jrhennecke Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 The thread had nothing to do with Catch & Release or keeping your catch. The simple fact is that a lot of us don't like seeing pictures of dead bass.
georgiabassfisherman Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 i agree with what LBH is saying here. I dont care if u keep some of your fish but dont post pics of dead fish if u can help it.
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted April 7, 2008 Super User Posted April 7, 2008 Who has dead fish in their avatars?
