ZEN BASSIN Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 I have this pond on my property, about 1 acre in size, with tall reeds encompassing most of it. I believe it to be spring feed and I've never threw a line in it, because I figured I would be wasting my time. Is there anyway I would be able to tell if I have a sweet spot right under my nose? I was told that if ducks live on it then bass are sure to be in it. True or False? For the past 2 out of 4 years that I lived here, ducks and snapping turtles have been living in it. Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted March 21, 2008 Super User Posted March 21, 2008 Fish that son of a gun. There is bound to be some fish in it. Heck I'd fish a mud puddle if it looked fishy. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted March 21, 2008 Super User Posted March 21, 2008 You might call your local conservation dept. maybe they can come out and shock it for you. Quote
JCrzy4Bass Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 Fluke's right. I had the same thing happen to me when I moved in with my gf. I had known this pond was here for about 8-9 years never saw a soul fish it. When I moved in with her and was just starting to fish I decided to check it out. Saw em' jumping all over and lost two biggun's on a spinnerbait first day out. Since then I've caught over 12 2lbers from it. Nice fish in there. I wouldn't cross it off your list until you've spent some time fishing it. Oh yea my specific pond I was talking about is a little over an acre. Barely. Quote
Cujo Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 You have pond on your property and haven't fished it yet? Quote
CFFF 1.5 Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 You have pond on your property and haven't fished it yet? I was thinking the same thing. You at least have to give it a try. I've fished retention ponds before, sometimes there are fish sometimes not. Quote
tyrius. Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 because I figured I would be wasting my time. I'm trying to figure out why ANY fishing would be considered a waste of time. I'd AT LEAST be practicing my casting there. It would look A LOT better than me casting in my yard. conclusion: fish it and if you don't catch anything then go somewhere else and catch some and release the bass and bluegill into your pond and then fish it some more! Super User Grey Wolf Posted March 21, 2008 Super User Posted March 21, 2008 You haven't fished it because you didn't wnat to waste your time? I realize time is precious but come on , throw a line in there , you might get a surprise. Quote
jrhennecke Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 Just give it a try. What do you have to loose? Quote
CFFF 1.5 Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 most all bodies of water that hold water all year long most likely have some type of fish in them. Unless the whole water column freezes in the winter. Down here in florida just about anything with water will hold some kind of fish. Quote
GobbleDog Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 I was told that if ducks live on it then bass are sure to be in it. What would be the connection between ducks and bass? Unless they're thinking bass eggs will stick to the duck's feet and get transfered there, but that's true of any bird, turtle or gator. Quote
ZEN BASSIN Posted March 21, 2008 Author Posted March 21, 2008 Yeah, That's it with the ducks along with bait fish to eat. I know I'm whacked for not trying it before, its just that I didn't want to waste time. Then I heard about the duck thing and it seemed to make click. My luck, the state record has been it all these years. Thanks all Quote
fishing man Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 there is only one way to know if there are bass in there, go out and fish it. Quote
Oscar O. Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 I thought ducks were vegetarians? Thats what i thought... I have never seen or heard of ducks eating fish... people are always feeding them bread and chips! Why bother going after a fish anyway! From a duck's perspective, being vegetarian would take less energy, especially if people and kids think you are cute and want to nice and feed you!!! ;D Quote
fishizzle Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 probably bass in there the ducks carry eggs, thats how fish spread to new ponds Quote
Rob.Atl Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Yea i would definitly fish that pond because when my freind found a pond practically in in his backyard and was hesitant to fish there not noing the results we made him go and try it and what do u know he caught his PB the second or third time he went, but he hasnt caught many fish in there but he still gave it a shot and got some results. And what do yall think about moving bass from an over populated lake to a pond like that would there be consequences or would it be fine, because i think it would be kind of cool to help that pond get some more fish in it to fish for. Quote
BassinAssassin171 Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 yeah that pond is like a puddle... smaller than an acre.. but there are bass in it. Rob just come to me with questions like that. the main risk would be invasive species but I've looked into it and it is fine. The only thing would be getting that guy's permission Quote
The Bass Guy Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 For shame for shame for not trying it prior to now... All self respecting fisher people would try... LOL... Even if it is for casting practice and/or technique practice.. By the way... Good Luck.. Quote
Perfect Hook Set Posted March 27, 2008 Posted March 27, 2008 Is there anyway I would be able to tell if I have a sweet spot right under my nose? *It could be a semi sweet spot or an annually sweet spot semi - certain time of the year annually - all year round (except for winter in the NE) 1st try live bait whether you catch fish or not Try what ever lures/plastics you have Even if you do not catch any thing in the next 2 months keep trying because, especially now the water will be cold and "bassin" is slow I was told that if ducks live on it then bass are sure to be in it. True or False? For the past 2 out of 4 years that I lived here, ducks and snapping turtles have been living in it. I believe that is false Same thing goes for the snapping turtle idea I have a local lake where I have only seen and caught sunnies and catfish for years now. Plenty of geese ducks and turtle there as well Quote
