dsiemssen Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 Just recently, I introduced my dad into bass fishing and I need some help. Is there any videos that show you how to use to certain lures bc when I explain it to him he doesnt get it at all...I would rather not buy one but if it comes down to it i will. But is there one video with all the tips and tricks on using certain lures? Quote
BUCKEYEone Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 WELCOME! Check out some of the articles on here that may help him out. I've learned a ton! to buy: bass pros, season 1 =look on ebay for it used to watch, hit up youtube, they have quite a few videos on there you could watch and pick some to show your pops! Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted March 13, 2008 Super User Posted March 13, 2008 WELCOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cabelas and Bass Pro Shops have how to videos.Just go to their on-line sites. Quote
dsiemssen Posted March 13, 2008 Author Posted March 13, 2008 BUCKEYEone what does the bass pro season 1 video show you...... spinnerbait and crankbaits are the most obvious lures to use, but he doesnt understand how to work a jig and how to fish a texas rig worm or tube. I know there is a ton of different methods of working them but I think i just want to show him the basics... haven't told him about flippin n pitchin or carolina rigs yet. ;D Quote
Nwfisher Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 Welcome! I would go to youtube and type in "bass professor", then click on his "all videos". and/or just type in the name of the lure you are curious about. Then, like stated above, go to Cabelas and bass pro shop websites and look at their video lure tutorials. Many times these are for a certain company like Berkeley or Storm, but they still help. Possibly the most helpful thing would be to use the forum search for an item and look down the list of all the times it was the main title of a thread. Quote
JCrzy4Bass Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 I wouldn't throw too much at him at once. honestly when I got my dad into fishing on Father's Day last year I started him out with one lure. He didn't have his own tackle so he used mine. I showed him the spinnerbait and the crankbait on the first day and those are the only two he used, mostly the spinner the first few times out. What happend? He caught more fish than me. I lost some lol. But he got the hang of the spinner, the type of retrieves like slow roll, burning, waking, yo yoing, etc. He got awesome with that. After watching me slam them on senkos all summer he swore to learning those. Tied on a pumpkin colored senko and caught fish consecutively for three months. He tore it up. I showed him patience, placement, how to rig em' for certain situations, etc. Take your time, most importantly find something within his style. If he's run and gun or impatient let him run a crank or spinner. If hes casual laid back and wants to wait for the fish teach him the jig, the plastic worm, or finesse techniques (though I'd hold of on those). Give him something he feels comfortable with. If he's anything like my dad he will ask questions or pay attention to you half the time to see what you are doing. But definately let him develop his own style and don't throw too many terms at him at once. Some things to remember. My dad outfishes me probably 60% of the time if not more. He has a ton of fish over 3 lbs and some over 5, I don't have anything over 3. Best is 2lbs 14oz. I've caught numbers but I can't get on the biggun's. Make sure when your on the water you spend time bonding and the fishing will come. That's the great part about this sport. If he doesn't understand the worm, get him on the senko articles in this forum. Some of the best advice on em', if not check out the GY home page, you can find it by googling him. Awesome advice on the swim senko there. For jigs, for starters watch LBH's jig fishing video. Helped me out a lot. Basics, but very well put. You can use the search function here for that video. The other guys were right, there are you tube videos on each lure as well. Maybe not as well done, but your father may find something that hits him the right way and he will want to master it. Good luck in both your ventures and hope you guys land some fish of a lifetime together. Nothing better than father and son fishing. Of course unless you have kids or your wife/gf loves fishing too. dsiemssen Posted March 13, 2008 Author Posted March 13, 2008 JCrzy4Bass thanks alot, that makes a ton of sense! he has no background of bass fishing, hes mostly fished for redfish and catfish down in louisiana, but i got into the greatest sport of bass fishing when i evacuated to Iowa after katrina. Popeye Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 Welcome to BR which is the BEST bass fishing forum on the Net, IMO. You can learn a lot about the various techniques from TV programs like Lindner's Angling Edge, Bass Pros, Bass Edge, etc. BR posts have an almost unlimited amount of information and if you can't find something already written, just ask, The great guys and gals on BR are eager to answer any and all questions. Again, welcome to BR!! Quote
Quinn Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 You are in the right place, I agree witht the other posts: Look here for articles, I have learned a "ton" also, this can make things complicated though, because I tried everything I learned at first to "master" or gain confidence in tech. but wasn't catching fish. If you have luck (success) with a place or tech. then show him on the water. I want to fish with someone who knows how to catch where they fish, it saves me time, money and who knows, I out fished my friend today on his own lake 8-) Quote
