Trail Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 Fellow Fishermen, I am in a twixt, I am fairly new to bass fishin, and tomorrow its going to around 60 in Arkansas. So off to the river I go. I have a question for you. The river that I am going to fish (Current River) is up a little and normally the water is pretty clear, but now its a little muddy, not bad as it was, but all in all, still a little bit up, and a little bit muddy. Is it even worth my while to spend my little extra I tuck back each week after the wife and bills get it. And if so, what lures would you suggest? Just lookin for a little advice and any is very much appriciated. Thanks for your time. Trail. Quote
Mobydick Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 Do you know the water temp? I would try some jigs and spinnerbaits, being that the water is murky, when it clears, some jerkbaits may be productive. Depending on how dirty the water is, I would go with a 1/2 ounce black bucktail jig with a black 4.25 inch Yum wooly bug dipped in chartreuse spike-it, only the tip of it. And work it slow. As for spinners, I always have luck on the white strike king red eye special in the 3/8 ounce, but I switch the big blade for a large colorado blade, and I might add a white trailer on it. Good luck, let us know how you do! Quote
Trail Posted March 1, 2008 Author Posted March 1, 2008 Hey Moby, Thanks man for the advice, i just purchased a nice spinner as well. Gonna have to give it a try, and the water temp is problably a little cool for now. Thanks again for the reply. Quote
paangler3117 Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 you might want to stay away from any current areas too. try to fish the slowest water you can find. a big hole might hold quite a few fish. if the water is in the 50's i would start with a jerk bait or senko. good luck-jim Quote
Trail Posted March 1, 2008 Author Posted March 1, 2008 What about since the water is up, there is an overflow right off the eddy? Someone told me the mouth of that might be some good fishing. Also, catfishing wouldnt be any good right now either would it? Quote
HesterIsGod Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 I would try 3.5 inch t- rigged tubes or small jigs in the back of deep pools created by laydowns with very little or not current Quote
BassChaser57 Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 I would try 3.5 inch t- rigged tubes or small jigs in the back of deep pools created by laydowns with very little or not current Yep, Current River is largely fed by Big Spring and cold year-round. The above is right on the money. Small tubes, jerkbaits, jigs, worms, or Senkos in the slack water JUST off the current breaks, behind rocks, and eddies. The largest Smallie I ever caught locally was at the downcurrent edge of a riffle. She was laying in wait of some morsel getting washed thru the fast water. Good luck and let us know how it went. Trail Posted March 1, 2008 Author Posted March 1, 2008 Well, I just got off the river and got me around a 5 pound Catfish. Missed a couple of good ones, but got one to brag about. I went into little black from current river and got my cat there. Worth every bit of it too...I aint complainin any. Thanks Everyone for all the great advice, I promise you I took every bit of it with me today! It was worth spendin the little I had for sure. Have a good rest of the day, and again, thanks all the replys. Quote
CJ Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 Current River is a spring fed river, if your talking about the same one that runs through southern Missouri. It stays about the same temp year around, somewhere around 62 degrees I think. Anyway it has a good population of rainbow trout. Most of the bass would smallmouth. Anyway, I've never fished it but I have stopped and talked to some fisherman there while floating down it. Most of them were trout fishing. Congrats on the catfish. CJ Quote

Yeah I frequently fish the current river and other rivers similiar to it, in Missouri with my dad and that technique produces almost all winter. Quote

rondef Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 I always have good luck with Rat-L-Traps in stained water. I have caught some nice 3-4 lb lmbs the last two weekends using them. Quote
