FourCorners Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 A fishing expo began today around my neck of the woods (Greensboro, NC) and I was just wondering if they are worth the hype. If I do go, this would be my first. My only reason not to go is I'd like to break in my new STX as the weekend weather is supposed to be moderately warmer. This would also be my last opportunity to fish at home for a while because I will return to college come Monday. Although I really shouldn't spend any more money, I was possibly considering purchasing a better rod for my new reel. Are there many deals that beat the prices of, say, cabelas or bass pro? Also, will the booths mainly just display gimmicks like the banjo minnow? KVD, Dean Rojas, and Peter Thliveros will also be there for seminars. What do they usually talk about and is the information very useful? I know these are some of the best, but I'm not too interested if its the usual information you could find on this great site. Thanks for the help Quote
Thefishy1 Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 I would go and talk to them about sponsorships more than fishing, because they have obviously made it in the fishing world. They know more about the ins and outs of being sponsored and what they are looking for in an angler more than most people Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted January 5, 2008 Super User Posted January 5, 2008 They are generally worth a look. the Houston show starts today for its two week run. Will make it several times. Quote
Super User grimlin Posted January 5, 2008 Super User Posted January 5, 2008 The baitmonkey's grandpa works his charm there ;D...Many people leave there with purchases of boats.I'm going to the one in michigan on jan. 13.It starts here on jan. 10 and runs till 13th.It's the only day i can make it. Looking forward to it,it's gonna be my first one i've been to. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted January 5, 2008 Super User Posted January 5, 2008 They start here next week. First San Mateo then the biggie in Sacramento the following week. I never miss them. Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 5, 2008 Super User Posted January 5, 2008 They can be excellent. Do you homework first. Check on what you want to consider buying and check out the prices in the BPS and Cabella's catalogs. You will then know if you are getting a good deal. The dealers may also negotiate the price. I got a Curado a few years ago for less than what the catalogs were asking. The presentations by the pros are dynamite. Worth the price of admission. Go and hear them. Speak with them. Ask questions. Take notes when they make their presentations. I know you want to go fishing but you may learn a lot and find a bargain or two at the expo. Quote
FourCorners Posted January 6, 2008 Author Posted January 6, 2008 Well, I ended up going to the expo this morning and had a fun time. Caught the end of Peter Ts demonstration and stayed for KVD's presentation on crankbaiting. Someone above said the pro demonstrations are well worth the entry and I agree; although KVD's tips were somewhat redundant, he did build my confidence and gave me better pointers on a few things I overlooked while fishing. Plus watching a bass being caught from a unique angle was awesome. I may actually go back tomorrow for Dean Rojas. As far as the rest of the show, I was somewhat disappointed. There was an abundance of regional guides and boat dealerships; being a broke college student, I steered away. As for the a new rod, a few booths were set up selling your usual gear with some smaller, unique brands also in the mix. I did, however, enter a raffle for a custom g loomis crankbait rod for one dollar. So I may not come away empty handed. Thanks for the replies. Hope this is helpful for any other expo first timers. BASS fisherman Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 Boy you guys are lucky! At the expo in Pittsburgh we only get guys who I've never heard of that do demos. KVD, Rojas, man that alone is worth the price of admission. Quote
bassrogue Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 FourCorners, thanks for the expo review. I'm trying to find a way to the expo in Raleigh this weekend. Glad to hear the seminars were worth going for, hopefully I can get to a few of them this weekend. Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 The Bass-A-Rama in Richmond VA is this coming weekend... It has been combined with a Boat Show, but I hear the same dealers from last year will be there this year... I also usually go to the Harrisburg PA outdoorsman show, but might skip it this year since the focus is mostly on trout and walleye these day... Quote
KevO Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 I went to the fishing expo in Nashville last weekend and was very dissapointed. I was hoping to find a good deal on shimano reels and there wasn't even one booth that had any. In fact there were only like 15 booths and the rest was all boats. I thought it was a waste of $6 (entry fee) and $20 gas. I am planning on going to the Nashville boat show this weekend, hopefully it will be a better show. Quote
Branuss04 Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 They start here next week. First San Mateo then the biggie in Sacramento the following week. I never miss them. Me too, i usually just bring my paycheck with me. I'm kinda dissapointed that neither mickey from 3:16 nor Ken from huddleston will be there. Major dissapointment but what are you going to do? I actually won some free tickets from Kent Brown, I was excited about that. They are definately worth going to. Lots of cool stuff, good deals, and good food. Quote
