Bass & DEET

  I was just reading in the book Knowing Bass how bass detested the scent of DEET and other repelents that anglers may use to fight off mosquitos and such. The lures could stay contaminated for up to 90 minutes. Im assuming this is 90 minutes of actually using the lure. This may explain some of my fishless adventures! What the book has yet to mention is what products are recommended to take the place of such repelents, or what the work around for the problem is. Neat book so far, found it at my local library.

I have also read that about DEET.  The only time the bugs really bother me is while night fishing.  I read Skin-so-Soft is a great bug repellent.  In has worked for me so far.  Plus your skin is left so silky smooth and it smells pretty good if you ask me. : ;D  Not something I would wear during the day though ..... you would fry!!!!!!

Yes, your information on DEET is correct, from what I have been told.

So I spray my clothing and neck before going out. I usually do this at home or at the dock.

Then, if I have to spray again I do so, but very carefully, and I wear plastic gloves you get at the grocery store to keep it off my hands.

And I apply scent to all baits, even the hard baits, spinnerbaits and buzzbaits.

So if I get skunked it is DEET's fault! ;D

Take some Dawn soap and wash(Scrub) your rod handles also. Everything you touch goes right back on your hands otherwise. It also makes them look new again.

 And I assummed this had already been done. Just didnt know what the product name was. If I were a Chemical Psyantist ;D I could invent an anglers repelent and maybe make enough to retire.

Bug spray of any kind is the best way I know to turn your fishing lures into fish repellers. Put it on, if you really need it, and WASH YOUR HANDS before you handle any of your gear.

Neat book so far, found it at my local library.

I bought it earlier this year and found it entertaining, informative and too scientifically detailed in some parts for my taste. But I don't know that I caught any more fish for having read it. But I do recommend it for anyone who is interested in the science of a bass, for example, how the various senses work.

Gasoline is the same way, I carry a box of latex gloves in my truck for when I fuel up on the way to go fishing.  I get funny looks wearing the gloves fueling, but I know I catch more fish.  Many noxiousl odors work the same way.
