This morning, I was presented with a check from Senator Sheldon Whitehouse on behalf of UPS for CAST For Kids.  This check is for 5k which goes 1/2 to paying for the event we just had and 1/2 to start an event in Mass. (corp headquarters for New England)!!!

Wait, it get's better.

I was pulled aside after the presentation by the regional manager, and he asked me a bunch of questions about CAST.  He's a fisherman.

He offered to pay for the RI event EVERY YEAR!!!!!

wait, it gets better....

They want to also pay for me to start a new event, in a new state, EVERY YEAR!!  So UPS has committed to paying for the ground breaking in a new state, AND the RI event,..every year!

So,...I have Mass on line for '08,.....who wants to do '09,...I already have the $$, that's probably the hardest part of throwing one of these events.  Anyone interested in bringing CAST to their home state??

Sidenote- Often, when I post about CAST stuff, the replies are all about commending me.  I appreciate it but need to point out once again that NONE OF THIS would be possible if GLENN didn't turn me on to CAST in the 1st place.  Glenn has been commited to CAST for years and is the one who educated me on the whole program.  The kids this has and will affect,...and myself, would like to thank him for that now.

Thanks Glenn!!

It was nice having Mike Jr (Tin2win) there with me also.  He and his family are a big part of this RI movement.  I got to introduce him to a few big hitters and he represented in true Ambassador style.

Many UPS'ers help in this effort, Tin2win, Matt 5.0, just to name a few.  Without volunteers of this caliber, we would be dead in the water.

Thanks guys  ;)

What can brown do for you?  ;D

That was awsome this morning, a good way to end work. Giving out those checks to two great organizations that change so many lives. Not only can there be another great event in RI but you can start spreading the word and getting more states involved. Do all the New England states have CAST?

To be honest, as I write this, I don't know much about CAST apart from the few odd posts I read from the guys involved around here (Next stop in this IMMENSE site...lol), but from what I've gathered, its about as clean and wholesome an organization as there is.  I would love to see an event down here on Long Island, but I think the organization would be better served a bit upstate or closer to New York City where the population and the media are greater.  I'm not sure of the fishing, but I wouldn't doubt that Westchester County has that potential, not to mention Duchess County.  Anyone from that area have any input?

Just to clarify, essentially what we do as hosts is we team up local bass club captains with handicapped, disabled or disadvantaged kids for a day on the water.

CAST provides the rods/ reels, tackle boxes, tackle, shirts, hats, plaques, and  liability, etc for the day.  And now UPS provides the $$!  These things are all kept by the kids.

We aim to teach the children and their parents/caretakers how to fish.  We set them up and teach them in a way that encourages them to continue at it even after the event.

In a nutshell

Teach them to fish...

I have to put this in there, at the Alumni Day for the Rhode Island CAST program, I noticed a few of the kids from last year fishing this year, and it was amazing to see how they have really gotten into fishing. I remember one of the kids who was in my boat in 06' had went from a good old zebco push buttom and worms on a bobber to a Quantum Spinning set-up and was firing out an 5" salty stick and catching fish. A couple were between 2-3 pounds in just an hour. Also saw other kids who had learned to fish with spinning rods and artificials. So the kids and parents arent just going out and fishing once a year with the CAST program, it is becomming a weekend thing and they are learning. It was quite the sight to see.

Great job on getting the funds for CAST.  I am hoping to be able to help out with the Washington DC event, I signed up online a couple of months agao but I have not received a response back yet.  I think this group does a great job from every thing I have read about them.  Once again congratulations, great work.

Granted, Glenn and this site has done a lot of good sorta part of the Thousand Points of Light George Bush Sr once spoke about - referring to community service and youth. But did UPS just decide to get on board with CAST out of the goodness of their own heart or did somebody we all know grease the wheels? LBH, you deserve the kudos man live with it!

For all the guys who have replied and  PM'd me, I really appreciate your interest.  I am going to make a thread explaining what is involved with being a CAST host.  This will clear a lot of things up and answer a lot of questions all in one shot.  It will also provide you the place to ask questions.

Much of this same info is available on the CAST site but this way, you will have direct accountability and quicker, more personalized access to answers, via me.

I'll work on this and have it up for the weekend.

Thanks again for your interest.  Should you decide to get involved, I can personally promise you that it will change you.  Period.

Dude...again, my apologies for missing it. By the time I got a parking spot out by D'Angelos, and got to the center, then got straightened out with my two diads, helper uniform etc etc....  ::) ::) ::)
