Tucson Posted November 17, 2007 Posted November 17, 2007 Here's a list of some of my favorite screw-ups. Note that these are my everyday screw-ups, not my Sunday bests. 1. Forget to pull up the anchor and wonder why my trolling motor isn't doing the job. 2. Forget to pull up the anchor and wonder why the boat is acting hinky at 3000 rpm. 3. Forget to set the bail before I cast, followed by staring at the rod like it's someone else's fault. 4. Carefully tying a tricky double-fisted, left hand tyrolean locking knot and then accidently trimming the running end instead of the tag end. 5. Casting my brand-new lure and immediately losing it. (Usually a Rapala black & silver shad pattern for some reason). 6. Coming back proudly after catching two bass and having someone (usually a crippled old blind lady or kid with a barbie rod) telling me they had a lousy day and only caught 18 fish. 7. Diligently tracking fish all weekend on the fishfinder only too find out it was in the simulation mode. Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted November 18, 2007 Super User Posted November 18, 2007 Wow, I'm guilty of every one of those. That's a good list. Quote
rboat Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 A few more goodies: 1. Getting that sinking feeling while you desperately try to recall if you put in the drain plug. 2. Forgetting to unhook one of the tie downs and wonder why the boat lifts off the trailer at half mast. 3. Giving throttle to the big motor when you notice the TM is still down. 4. Jumping into the seat to run to the next hot spot and landing on that rattletrap you just took off, (the one with the new hooks you replaced). 5. Pulling out of the water when you did not raise the motor up. 6. Trying to lower the big motor with the tilt lock still in place. :-[ Quote
Schaefer Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 3. Forget to set the bail before I cast, followed by staring at the rod like it's someone else's fault. Haha that happens to me everytime I go out, but for me its usualy followed by cursing and swearing. ;D How about when the line catches your finger on the cast, usualy ends up in a tree for me. :-/ Quote
rboat Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 One more: You do your best KVD imitation with an expensive lure to show off your practiced casting to the perfect dock and your line goes up, over, and around every crossmember and post, through the boat on the lift, around the adjacent jet ski, and the lure lands hooked to the sign reading (THIS PROPERTY PROTECTED BY TRAINED GUARD DOG!) :'( Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted November 18, 2007 BassResource.com Administrator Posted November 18, 2007 Tying a drop-shot rig and then clipping off the "tag" end by mistake (old habits!) Spending 10-15 minutes cursing at the big motor just before blast off at a tournament because it won't start when somebody yells, "Kill switch!" .... oh... oops Making a cast, getting an abrupt backlash that stops the reel suddently, snapping your line and watching your lure fly 1000 yards away before splashing down, never to be seen from again. Just after re-tying, you take the tag end you just clipped off and toss it overboard.... along with your pliers/clippers/scissors. Swatting at the bee near your ear and accidentally knocking your expensive fishing glasses off into the drink! Placing the cooler by the tailgate to get something out of the back, get distracted and forget about it, then run over it later with the trailer. and my favorite... Stepping off the dock onto the Bass Hunter, suddenly realizing it's not stable, lose your balance, grab the chair to right yourself ONLY THEN to realize the chair's not attached! ....KER-SPLASH!! Fishin-Psyantist Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 Ive thrown my entire rod and reel in the water three times this year. I duno how it happens but it just leaves my hand unexpectedly. Quote
Guest muddy Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 Stepping as hard as i can on the foot control of a TM only to have it go in a complete circle! Forgetting to crank up the star drag, trying to reel in and figure out whats wrong with the spool Fishing a promising looking pond for 2 months to learn there were no bass in it trying to learn how to use a compass and putting it on a magnetized clip board ON The Fork: forget to pick up trolling motor nd digging through the mud with gas engine running and #1 What do you mean I have to trim the boat when Im running all out Quote
frogtog Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 Stayed home so I wouldn't have to kiss her good by. ;D Quote
Big_Bass_Rock Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 One time my brother chucked his rod and reel into the water while casting and the bail was still open, we were on a dock and it was pretty deep, but luckily there was a bobber on the line and we were able to fish it out. Another time I hooked a random kid in the leg casting while I was fly fishing and they had to take him to the hospital. Quote
bassnleo Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 Finish tying a new bait on, clip the tag end off, toss the bait overboard and realize you clipped the wrong end and your bait does not float.......doooohhhh!!!! Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 Kicking a rod overboard sucks. Forgetting the camera sucks Forgetting the Gore-tex sucks and is just dumb I think MY list is too long, the reply box only allows 9000 characters, lol. Quote
Little_Minnow Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 New to this but already have an embarrassign moment. I was test driving a used bass boat that I was thinking about purchasing and although I am new to fishing I am not new to boating...I remembered the straps....I rememembered teh plug....boat started right up and we idled out fot he marina for the test drive...we cleared the rock wall...I asked if he was ready as I turned my hat around backwards so I wouldn't lose it....he knodded....and tehn I slamed teh handle forward and braced myself........nothing...he looks over at me and points to the floor and says...."its called a hot foot...like the pedal in your car" he still agreed to sell the boat to me lol. As a new guy I am loving this post Josh Quote
Guest avid Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 HMmmmmmmmmmmmm. I have a long list too, but a couple of my favorites would have to be, carefully tying an improved albright to join braid to mono and then cutting the main line instead of the tag end. having a backlash that causes a lure to snap off and sail away, then forgetting to clear the backlash, tying on a new lure and watching it join the first one. Quote
G3-Basser Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 Watching the boat launch itself about 10 feet short of the water while backing down the ramp. Luckily the boat and outboard were fine...the transducer was not so lucky. This is when I learned not to let your fishing partner mess with the winch. -J Quote
pondhopper Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 Struggling to tie a good knot in the wind only to clip the standing line, not the tag end. Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted November 18, 2007 Super User Posted November 18, 2007 THANK YOU GUYS......................I thought I was the only one that did all those things. I don't feel so bad now. Falcon Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted November 18, 2007 Super User Posted November 18, 2007 Every one forgets the drain plug sometimes -Or what about stringing up a spinning reel and rod, adding a lure, and only to find your line on the wrong side of the bail -Using a 2 piece rod and casting the upper half into the drink and as luck would have it a curious dink decides to bite and you have to wrestle him in with only the butt piece. -getting a lunker wearing a treble hook smile wrapped up in the anchor line. -dropping your cell phone in the drink -cleaning some fishing line out from the tm and dropping the prop drive pin in the water on a really windy day -getting snagged and pulling the anchor up and hearing your rod go kerplunk because you didnt go freeline first. -taking the time to tie a fancy knot and giving it the pull test only to have it come apart like gravy. -not retying your line when you know it needs it because your having too much fun beating up a school of dinks, then big momma decides to take a wack at your offering. -letting your worm lie in the water while nature calls and ending up with some wet pants or maybe shoes too. -purposely running your bait past an alligator because hes sitting right in the weeds and brush that you caught that lunker out of the other day, only to find out just how quick those guys are! RobbyZ5001 Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 Hooking the posative and negative up backwards and wonder why your going in reverse. Quote

Super User Gatorbassman Posted November 18, 2007 Super User Posted November 18, 2007 Threading your line threw the guides, tying on a spook, then making a beautiful long cast only to look down and notice you didn't thread the line through the levelwind on the reel. > Waking up in the middle of the night and hearing a rainstorm. You realize you had opened all the hatches in the boat so they could air out overnight. Jump up and run outside in your boxers to cover the boat only to hear a woman's laugh coming from your neighbors porch. Forgetting to put the coupler lock back on the trailer. Remembering while going 70mph down the highway. Quote
Evan Pease Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 My most common ones would be forgetting to undo the bail, forgetting to set the bail and hook-setting into air, setting into logs and breaking my rod, and loosing a rod in the deepest part of the lake. Quote
Super User Jimzee Posted November 19, 2007 Super User Posted November 19, 2007 Guilty of this all the time.......Tying a worm hook on and forgetting to put the bullet weight on first. ARRGGHH!!! > Boat plug has gotten me once, hopefully never again. :-/ Quote
