Help me regain my intrest in fishing

I really never thought the day would come when it has been a month since I last when fishing. I have no clue why I have not gone or visited Bass Resource in such a long time. I would like to blame the MMORPG's I play but fishing should be more addictive. Maybe just some good words or reminders about fishing to spark my fishing plug because I wanna get back out there but i dunno my heart is no longer in it =(

Just remember how pieceful it is being out on the water, especially now that a lot of people have stoped coming out because of the weather.  Remember how it is when you are completely relaxed and then all of sudden getting a good size fish hooked.  You go from being completely relaxed to your heart pounding and the excitement racing.  A computer game keeps you happy at the same level, while nothing beats that feeling of getting a fish.  Seeing him jump out of the water and then holding him up.

I used to get like that too, but now that I have been fishing tournaments and found what I really enjoy. I have some lists of goals... I set a mark now i'm just trying to take the steps to do so. Maybe if you set some goals ie. fishing a new lure and trying to get the hang of it, catch a new PB, fish new lakes, get inolved with kids also will do it.. If it's something you truly enjoy it will come back to you, you may just need a break.

 Was wondering just the other day why you haven't been posting? If you really enjoyed it in the first place, just getting out again a few times should do the trick. Turn the games off, get off your butt and do it . You know you want to or you wouldn't have posted this ...

I wouldn't worry about it too much.  It runs in phases.  My hobbies run with the seasons.

During the Fall / Winter months I only get out on the water a handful of times.   If there is an above 40 degree day in the Winter I will go out on the water and do some fishing.  I'm not a cold weather fisherman, so I do better in the summer.  When Spring hits right before spawn I am out the door, and I usually don't slow down until late September when it starts getting cooler.  During the summer I fish almost every day even when it's raining.    In the Winter months I don't feel like fishing either.  I usually fill my time with winemaking which is my Winter hobby.  During the Winter I usually make around 100 gallons of wine, and that keeps me refreshed through the dog days of Summer.

I stumbled upon this forum when I realized I had so much time and could fish.  I fished so much for 10 years then stopped because I spent all the time making my work look good in college and working for more money (I didn't have to, but wanted money)  Then when it got close to graduation I had so much time and I thought of fishing.  So I fished.  I caught a nice bass just to get me going with a rapala fat rap, and then caught nice big bass with a fat free shad.  It all came back to me, it got stuck, and then I started to come to this forum.

I don't know what the deal is with the MMORPGs and you, but I can tell you that video games are my number one love in life and my major in college was heavily related to the game industry.  I want to get into that.  With video games now they're so much more than kill the monsters for fun.  They'll take any idea and try to make it a fun game like farming.  Fishing never left me when I was in college, because it was so noticeable how bad video games tried to imitate them.  So many people hated the games and said bs like "at least its more fun than actual fishing."  That got to me.  Some companies actually cared when it came to fishing imitation in games.  I played that Zelda game on the Wii and got so addicted to the fishing area of that game.  I wanted more fishing games, but these new ones are pretty bad.  A lot of them are just sit and wait with the bobber only.  Then it cracked,  I came upon that free time during my last quarter in college and started fishing for real.

So just fish now and feel it!  If you can't right now then do something that has some sort of relation to fishing and ask yourself if it really left you.  If it did then ok now you know, but if it didn't then think that you are going to fish and when you do it might be an awesome day for that next trip

I'm gonna agree with this one. I kinda took a long break when i was younger...3 years ago i rekindled my passion for fishing and now it's stronger than ever.I don't ever see myself taking a break anymore,afterall we have fishing seasons here...so that helps get me excited for next spring when bass seasons opens.It works out.

I lost interest for about 7 years, and then gradually got back into it.  IMO, its like everything else, if you don't find a pace you like, you'll burn yourself out on it.

I've been fishing for 53 years and never lost interest, so I can't say I know what you are going through. In my opinion there is no more challenging game than fishing. Plus you are not just sitting on your butt  playing a game.

Personally I'd rather be challenged by Mother Nature than a computer.

A lot of the guys had good points, but none of them mentioned this. And I don;t know if this is true, and I'm not trying to call you a sissy or anything becasue this seems to happen to me this time of year.

The days are getting very short, not even 12 hours of sunlight anymore. The weather is cold, and death is all around us. The leaves on the trees are dying, vegetation in the ponds and algae is dying. This time of year is when a lot of people get Seasonal Depression. It has to do with the lack of sunlight which makes you tired all the time. When there is not a lot of light, this increases Melatonin production. Melatonin is the sleep hormone. It is produced when there is lack of light, and killed off when light enters the eye. So if you are walking around all day tired, sleepy, uninterested in anything but going back to bed, then this will kill all interests. Thi sis due primarly to the sudden increase in melatonin production. There is a lot less natural light around us now, and a lot more melatonin in us. Are bodies are naturally getting ready for hibranation.

Why are you still interested in the video games. Simple. Because by sitting in front of the computer, it is actually killing off the melatonin and waking your @$$ up and easing that seasonal dpression. It does so because the LIGHT(not only sunlight contributes to melatonin) from the computer screen is strong, and you are sitting fairly close to it. (We just went over this is one of my college course.)

Now, this may not be the case, I could be so far off its not even funny. But I just wanted to throw that out there so you could understand about whats happening in our bodies right now.I get the same way around this time of year. When I come home from classes all I do is lay in bed an watch tv. I still enjoy fishing though. And I could stand out there in 30 degree weather(and have done it more than a few times) If there was a chance of me hooking into one)

But if the weather and changing of the seasons isn;t what it is, just sit and reflect of why this is happening all of a sudden. Why are you losing interest in a passion of your life? I personally can;t live without fishing.  ;D It's sick. I'll either be on here, another MAssachusetts fishing forum, cabelas, bass pros,watching Versus or CHarlie Moore or something related to fishing. I'll make cast after cast after csat after cast until I finally get a hit. And then I'll repeat. I LOVE IT!!!

But, if you feel as passionate about these games then don;t let anything get in the way of your passion.(and I can fully understand why, as a kid I was obsessed with video games. I owned nintendo, super nintendo, sega, Nintendo 64, dreamcst, playstation 2) Now I rarely play them because I get my stimulation else where. Yep, you guessed. From hauling in a slimey flopping fish.

Maybe it's just you're bored of fishing. Like Robby said, make it interesting by setting new goals(Thanks man I'm gonna try that myself) 1. Learn baitcaster. 2. Learn Carolina Rig 3. Catch more bass, bigger bass, all the bass....whoa...see what you did to me

Anyway, I get pretty depressed in the winter, just by default (d**n that Melatonin), but mostly because I can't do some of the things I enjoy most in life (fishing - ice fishing does not do it for me at all, golf, just being outside in the warmth).  I usually just play a lot of internet poker and go to Foxwood's a bunch.  I need to get one of those sun lamps.  

Anyway, wintertime duldrums almost seem worth it when spring comes around.  When it starts getting warmer, I drive around to many different lakes just to see which ones are gonna ice out first, and I even make casts to holes in the soft ice, even though I'm pretty sure I won't get any hits.  The pure act of casting a lure and retrieving it is just awesome after a winter indoors.  In this respect fishing in the Northeast is a nice change from the South - I would guess that fishermen in the South (much like southern golfers) burn out a lot more easily than northern anglers just because they're doing it all year long.

Anyway Other, you can't force your interest in fishing, but I defy you to go out, catch a few nice fish, and not have a helluva time.  If you are able to catch fish and not have as much fun as you do while playing video games, stick to the video games.  Be happy.

I lost interest for 30 years.  Just started back again. Never was a bass angler.  Talk about starting over!  I have really enjoyed becoming interested in fishing again.

jwo...lots of people in Alaska get what you are talking about when winter comes. SAD (seasonal affective disorder), google it. Sometimes if it gets real bad people use lightboxes that mimic the suns rays, however most people cure it by going to the bar ;D

I used to have the same problem as you a few months ago.

what I did

1. used all my computer game CD's as clays

2. Skipped worked at least twice a month to go fishing

3. Spent my paycheck on new gear

4. Ditched a weeding and went fishing, and caught my pb of 6.5lbs ( a true trophy in New England) northern strain.

5. Hit myself as hard as I could in the gut when I thought of playing a mmorpg ( massive multiplayer online role-playing game)

Also, In the winter you the suns goes down before i finish work so I can only fish once a week.

Every winter I take a break and go snowboarding and use a snowblower to snow people in or out of there house via the front door. Very fun except when I buried a nerd up to his chest in the snow and he later called the cops on me  :'(

Well I sort of got an idea that will get me a little more interested. I am going either on saturday or sunday in a place that is sopposivly very good during this time of year. A reason to go out to dicks sporting goods look through the isles get what I need and remember how much I love walking down those isle looking at every product they have. Then going out to go catch a few fish. I just hope its not so cold out though becasue I will probally wade for some of the time getting out of the water will be a killer.

There's a lot of text in this thread, but I'm a professional photographer, so I have a tendancy to speak through my images. So here, imagine that's YOU on the shore in this picture, and not my friend John. The world is mostly sitting their lazy ***** on the couch watching Seinfeld, while you're out there chilling, throwing your line in. No noise, no problems, just stunning fall colors water like glass, and you trying to outsmart an amazing preditor.

The photo is only shore fishing, I'm sure you have a boat which might be even more fun!

If the photo doesnt help, just know that the guy in the picture landed a 6.7 pound hog about 30 minutes after I took that photo. Imagine what he was feeling when he first hooked her. The feeling of the vibration in his hands from the fighting fish, as well as the feeling of knowing all his hard work has paid off. His understood the fish, he made his lure choice, his presentation, and it all worked together. Now there's nothing between him and that pretty bass, but a thin little thread of 10 pound test mono.

Come on bro, you can't beat that.... Seriously.
