1inStripes Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Although my money wasn't spent thankfully, I am part of the usual suspects on here. Banjo minnow and flying lure. I did like the crawdad flying lure for pitching under a hanging tree wading for panfish and smallmouth. Quote
HB Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Fat Ika's Ditto on the Ikas! I bought 3 bags of those things, and after a half-dozen attempts, I haven't caught squat. Not even one bite. The fish were there too. After 1+ hours (per trip) of unproductive fishing, switching back to a senko put fish in the boat. I know that other people on bassresource like the Ika, but I'm really starting to think that they suck. Oh yeah, I tried them backwards & forwards. No difference in the bite. Maybe I'll cut one in half (length wise) and see if a "leech Ika" works any better. :-? RIDICULOUS! Fish the Fat Ika EXACTLY where you would fish a Senko and EXACTLY the same way. This bait is simply a different profile with different action. Sometimes the fish prefer the Fat Ika to the Senko, sometimes it's the other way around. http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1141053342 8-) : : Sorry Kent. Not doubting your credibility at all.I just think the Ika is one of those baits that won't work in all kinds of water or areas of the country. I've pitched it in cover, used on a c-rig,rigged front, back, sideways, over humps, drops,up,down, across, parallel, fast, slow, twitch, deadstick, lift, drop with very limited success.Gave it a fair chance.I could join the crowd that says they can't catch a cold on that thing. That being said I don't think I made a "dumb" purchase (4 times). It looks fantastic in the water. It just doesn't jive with me. I agree; it could just be the part of the country that dictates whether or not the fat ika is effective. Here in WA senkos are deadly. Strangely enough I've caught more & bigger fish using the 4" senko than the 5". Maybe worms just don't grow that big here in WA??? I've also had MUCH better luck with small crankbaits than bigger ones. One of my favorites is the "sparkle fire tiger" wally diver. I've caught largemouth, smallmouth, crappie, perch, and even 1 kokanee on that thing. Quote
Brad_Coovert Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 A $17K, 17' tackle box. ;D Before I had that boat, I had 6 rods and a soft sided tackle bag with some Plano boxes. Then came the boat with all that space...... You know the story. Quote
-ebby- Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 yozuri hybrid line- no confidence in it after it snapped on three or more small fish kicktails and pretty much anything "finesse" Quote
jimmieO Posted January 31, 2009 Author Posted January 31, 2009 i am now adding Berkley Vanish to my list....should have listened to basically everyone here, but it was super cheap at walmart....it seems to develop abrasions just from waves---GARBAGE! Quote

I've caught largemouth, smallmouth, crappie, perch, and even 1 kokanee on that thing. Wow, surprised to hear you guys didn't do any well with them. I don't really throw them in real weedy areas, its a bait I do well with in open water, or sparse cover, like a lillypad patch here and there. I fish it backwards. I'll cast it and let it sink to the bottom, then give it around a 4-5sec pause, while watching for the line to pick up and slowly take off. If nothin happens I'll give the rod a good upwards jerk to get the bait to fly upwards (I try not to make it go as far as the surface though), and then I'll let it fall and pause and just repeat the process. Sometimes instead of one hard jerk after letting it pause that is, I'll give it 2-3 jerks. The fish tend to pick it up when its either paused, or falling. I have done pretty well with this bait. And I love the look I get from other fishermen who never seen the bait before, they look at the backwards ika on my line, and then look at me with that "huh...?" look. That is until I pull a bass up infront of em . Colors I use most are greenpumpkin and watermelon, if its overcast or muddy water or dusk I use black/blue flk. Quote
The_Natural Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 I recently purchased some P-Line CX Premium to try. The_Natural recommended it and I trust his judgement. I bought #6 for spinning tackle, but the line that was meant to be suggested was higher test for baitcasting, I think? Anyhow, after I spooled the line up, I tied on a jig to test it out. The line broke when I pulled the knot taunt. I then wrapped some around both hands...and broke it by hand! What was really dumb, I got so mad I threw it away instead of taking it back! :-X Yeah...Yozuri Hybrid and Pline CXX would be the only suitable lines in the 6lb class I would bass fish with...they are both very underrated lines with much higher than advertised breaking strengths. CX premium is VERY thin and pretty true to its rating. I've got 6lb CX Premium on mine and my wife's crappie rigs...there is no way you could bass fish with it...holy crap! I should have put a disclaimer on it knowing what you normally use 8-). The 10lb CX Premium is the same diameter as 6lb Yozuri. So basically fishing 6lb CX Premium would be like fishing with 2lb Yozuri Hybrid . I guess I'm glad you threw it away before you lost a good fish on it. Oh well...I'll still get you to try something else 8-) Quote
Big Tom Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 I use 15 lb. CX Premium and I absolutely love it. Its got a really small diameter and handles like a dream. You can pull a boat with that stuff. Quote

You can pull a boat with that stuff. The 15 and 20lb are very popular lines here in Texas. The 15lb has the same diameter as 10lb CXX, and lots of guys use it as their 'all-around' line. RW needed the 10lb CX premium on his spinning rig...6lb is suicide :-X Quote
Big Tom Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 I don't now if I am confident enough to throw 6 lb. line for bass anyhow. That takes a special kind of person for sure. 8 lb. is the lowest I go and still feel comfortable . Sometimes I wonder if its strong enough. Quote
Btech Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 Alot of you will disagree but id say the berkley triline sensation - I just dont like it one bit - Read my post in Shimano Product Support for more detials. Quote
flatbass Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 Mine is a little different but plenty stupid. I had never used a computer untill about six months ago, being a hardheadrd ol fart. Anyway, I bought two BPS Extreme rods off Ebay for about $20.00. I thought I had made a heck of a deal untill My daughter pointed out they had about 6" broke off and retipped. I didn't read the discription part. Quote
T-Bone Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 Worst purchase would be buying my girlfriend a fishing pole...first cast, both treble hooks from the crankbait dug deep into my thigh, that was fun getting them out. Other than that, Berkley vanish, Berkley Gulp, and the chatterbait. Quote
ProCraft Joe Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 I vote the Storm Swimbaits too. My wife says my Mustang inflatable PFD is money wasted. Haven't fell in since I got it. ;D Quote

I like em alright. Quote
calikid Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 Several people chose the Storm swimbaits. Try fishing them on the bottom like a jig, they may prove worth the purchase. As for me, helicopter lure, dancin' eel and Bass Pro buzzbaits. Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted February 1, 2009 Super User Posted February 1, 2009 Berkley Vanish, Viscious Flouro Fence Wire, Gulp stinking minnows, just about anything in the .99 box at Wal-Mart, which I frequent, and these 9" FLW brand "things" that had a fish type body with googley eyes and a huge grub type ribbon tail. Quote
Super User Micro Posted February 2, 2009 Super User Posted February 2, 2009 Luck ''E'' Strike Bass Magic Swimbaits. You have to burn them to get any action. And they smell like a chemical factory. Never caught anything on them Quote
Calcutta Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Any reel that say johnny morris or BPS on the nameplate. Ive broken every one on at least the first or second trip. Yes, and the .99 cent bin at wally world. Quote
guitarkid Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 In my opinion the $.99 cent box rules. At least the one here is O.K. they had some YUM tubes that are pretty good, they also had some crawbugs too. -gk Quote
Tom Sawyer Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I did a search on this site for "banjo minnow", and didnt find much at all, So hoping this is not another shot to the dead horse SO I ask you: Does the banjo minnow have a better ability to catch bass than what we all are used to using whether its a senko or crankbait?, I saw that d**n infomercial again this a.m. then remembered my buddy gave me the banjo set a year ago (i totally forgot i had them, never used them) Thx for any feedback on the banjo, and sorry if this is a repeated topic. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 24, 2009 Super User Posted February 24, 2009 The Banjo Minnow will produce bites when almost anything else would be a better choice. A well known alternative is the Slug-Go (flukes). 8-) Quote
