I was out earlier today castin a ratltrap....After this one cast as soon as i started to retrieve it i could see it was getting dragged across the top of the water. I knew my line must of gotten tangled in the hooks on the cast, so i start rippin it across the top to get it in and get another cast out there but then i thought "let it drop a few feet see if untangles itself" the split second I stopped it got clobbered. Big splash and all, he came right out of the water after it. Nice healthy 2 pounder. Totally surprised me.

Anyone else had any strange bites?

Yeah, especially with smallies.  On several occasions I've missed a stike so that the senko's all twisted up and as I'm reeling it in accross the surface I'll get bit.  It makes me laugh every time, and each time it happens my love for smallies grows.

And sometimes it happens when the hooks on my Zara Spook/Puppy get fouled.  I get hits like that sometimes but usually they miss (or I'll miss them).  Can't say it's happened with a trap though.

ballsy little bastages arent they!   When they hit lures bigger than they are themselves is when i admire Bass the most!

I have caught several bass before by throwing a senko on top of the slop to retrieve it across the top to let it fall into a hole when it got blasted by a LM on the way across the surface.  Those fish are funny creatures.  They hit stuff they aren't supposed to and at times never hit what you would swear they should.

B.T.W. I don't know if you guys noticed, but this topic was moved from "General Bass Fishing "to "Fishing Tackle" by RW and then moved back to "General Bass Fishing" by Glenn.  I't would be funny if RW moves it back.

Back when I still fished from a canoe with a trolling motor, my buddy and I were headed in after a tough day, and his wife calls him. He has his rattle trap dangling just ABOVE the water, and a white bass jumps up and nails it. Some guys have all the luck...

i was fishing a inline spinner up along the shore line. i was done w/ the cast so i burned it in the last 5 feet or so. then as i was lifting it out of the water it was about an inch or two above the water when a bluegill came out from nowhere and smacked it. that scared the pee outta me!!! literally all i had to do was lift the rod up and over into the boat...and i did that just outta reaction!!!!! i ate him for lunch :)

I was casting a shad rap from the bank on my local river.  I threw it out there, and a bug was swarming around my face,so i take a hand and swat at it.  While swatting, the shad rap was floating down the river.  I look up (still swatting) and a 6lb carp comes up and slams it on topwater.  I thought it was interesting.

my buddy had a topwater hanging over the back of my boat and caught a 2+ pound smallie in about 20' of water.....must have been suspended and almost ripped the rod out of the boat.........just recently in Canada I had a strike on a topwater and thought I missed the fish---I popped it again and had another strike...to my surprise when I got the fish in I had about a 6" bass on the front hook and about a 13" on the back hook.

I caught a stick once.

But it came off before I could get him in the boat.

Darn.

;)

My most unusual catch came from this large rectangular dug out pond.  This thing is absolutly FULL of rice slicks.  I took my 6 yr old neice down there to fish, on day.  I was using my UL and she was using her little barbie rod.  This is the kind of place were you can catch those little fish on every single cast (she loves it by the way)  Anyways, I casted my little jig out and hooked one, just like we had a hundred times that day. But to my suprise, this was a little 5'' bass.  That's the only bass i've ever caught in that pond to this date.

10 lb. +/-  snapping turtle on a F-3 Rapala while fishing for smallmouth in a little creek behind the house.  It hit topwater just like a bass.  The fight was on because I was using ultra-lite gear with 2 lb. test line.

I was fishing with by brother-in-law a few weeks ago at a small lake in OK.  I was using a typical watermelon lizard.  I reeled it in one time to find that a small bass that was maybe 1.5" had ahold of that 6" lizard by the tip of the tail.  It held on for about 30 seconds after I lifted it out of the water.  It was one of the funniest thing I've ever seen while fishing.  That was one ambitious fish.

All I could think of afterward was that little chicken hawk from the Foghorn Leghorn cartoons.

My brother-in-law wouldn't let me count it becuase I let it fall back into the water.  What's up with that?

Fishing over the summer at my sisters I went to reel in a line I had out at night bluegill fishing.  When I looked down in the water a 7-8 lb turtle shot off to deeper water.  The next thing I know my line gets alot heavier.  When I finished reeling in the same turtle had swam right into my line and got himself hung on the hook. ;D

I was fishing a friends pond one time and I saw a snake swimming across the water.  I grabbed my other rod which had a jig head and a grub on it.  I tore the grub off and started throwing the bear jig head over and over trying to snag the snake when WAM!  A nice crappie just laid into it.

I caught a Grub...like a 3 inch Chartruese Grub that was suspended, on a rattletrap.  First of all how many grub's are just floating 5 feet deep around in lakes?  And then what are the chances that when my lure hit it...the hook's actually sunk in?

i once was casting a baby bass rat l trap as a search pattern i snagged something turns out i snagged some fishing line well i pulled that line in by hand and it had a 5 in bass on the other end of it with a very light weight crank bait on it i still have that cank to this day but never used it because it dont cast too far

***one day when i ran out of lures, i took a soda can and cut a big triangle out of the middle. I then hooked the piece of tin and casted out... the second it hit the water, BAM....a 3 lber nailed it, and i got it in......this was the only catch all day...biggest fish i ever caught at the time

***Once I was reeling in a spinner bait real fast, and when i got it up, i saw a little baby largemouth, about an inch long on my lure..... the hook went right through the middle of him...... he was about a 1/3 a size of the lure.....weird, must of pulled it in really fast

***caught some bluegills on a bare treble hook a few times....just to prove that i could catch them with a bare hook

*** caught a baby tiger musky on a 5' senko....was about 15" long....no fight whatsover, just dragged accross the surface.....

***caught a snapper turtle on a inline spinner, thought i was snagged till i got him up on the surface...**** broke the line the second it was pulled out of the water

***caught a see gull once in florida, thought i had a real nice catch

***I have bats hit my lure when i cast all the time....never caught one, but once it was close....they hit my line alot when im reel in too...

***caught a nice sized tuna in florida when a shark hit it as i brought it up.....after a 30 min fight, a half of a tuna was brought back on the boat. looked like it had to be a pretty descent sized shark

***many times when i was young and would catch small bluegills, i would put a bigger hook on and cast them back out, 2 or 3 times something so big hit the line that it almost instantly broke the line, AND HIT HARD AS HELL......musky maybe???or a big turtle? i will never know

I once caught a bass on a Helicopter Lure.

Yeah ok I'm lying.

Helicopter lure was a gimmicky-type lure that came out in the 90's.  If you hate when your line is smooth ands not twisted, tie one of these on and you'll be all set.

The other day i was casting a crankbait, and I hooked into a fresh water clam. The hook was stuck in between the two shell halves. I think the clam snapped down on the hooks thinking it could have been food.

I remember fishing a local river this spring, I casted out and let my senko sink to the bottom, then my cellphone rang so I took my eyes off the line for about 15 seconds when I feel my rod jerk, I set the hook without even looking.  When I looked over I saw that a bird had flew into my braided line and gotten itself tangled up.

I went fishing and I caught a bird, getting it off my line was the strangest experience ever  :o
