I was using a top water bait and caught two 2-3lbs'ers on my first five casts. Ten minutes later I had a big strike. Fought for a minute or two then he jumped out of the water. Twice the size of the previous two caught. Five seconds later he jumped again and my line snapped and lost my lure.

As I was tying on a new lure, I see him jump about 10 yards in front of me and hear my lure rattling. Then I see my lure floating on the water. HE SPIT THE LURE BACK AT ME. Atleast it floated back to shore and I was able to grab it.

The other guy standing by me started laughing so hard he was coughing.

Great story, Mark.

I wish all the fish I have had broken off while using a topwater would throw the bait back to me.

And that goes for all of my other baits, too.

In the future, consider putting your rod tip into the water to stop them from jumping.

Also, check your drag as a too tight drag can cause your line to snap.

And, as you know, always run your line through your fingers to check for knicks after every 10 casts when reeling in your line even if you are not fishing around structure.

The best part of the story is that you can now go back in the early AM or late PM and try your luck with a buzzbait or another topwater and try to catch her. Be sure to use a trailer hook on the buzzbait.

I had a lot of luck with a buzzbait yesterday. I went to a small local pond where that does not get pressured at all and a buzzbait out fished live shiners. I only caught small fish, although the bass population for that pond is small on average. The buzz also out fished a Pop-R, so through deductive reasoning I am thinking that all the strikes were just reaction hits.

Similar thing happened to me in the spring while fishing with a pop'r.  A hawg took it off the top and fought hard for a little while , then she broke me off.  I think she finally sandpapered my line with her lips.  I never gave her a chance to jump but, once she was loose she jumped out of the water every 5-10 minutes shaking and I could hear the pop'r rattling.  My lure never resurfaced.  I think she had it really deep.  Every other fish I caught on top that day had it really deep.  A couple weeks later at the same pond I was fishing with a friend and told him the story.  A little later he hooked a nice fish and fought it for a while only to lose her and the lure.  Well guess who starts jumping out of the water every 5 minutes with a chatterbait in mouth!  She did finally throw it while we were watching.  Too bad chatterbaits don't float because she threw it out in the middle of the pond.

Funny story marko,

I had a great day yesterday, the lmb and stripers started schooling and they were killing the shad.  I caught 5 lmb and 5 stripers.  nothing really big 2.5 was the biggest for each kind but it was a lot of fun.  I caught them all on chrome rat-l-traps and super spots.

Marked, I hooked a double digit bass a few years back that came up to the surface, smiled at me then dove into the hydrilla and snapped the line.  What drove me nuts was right before the cast I told myself I needed to switch to braid-I had an identical rig on the deck spooled with braid.  Ever notice you remember the fish you lost much longer than the ones you catch?
