squid Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 THEY COULD STILL SPONSOR THE FLW AND NOT SELL ANY FISHING GEAR. YOU'VE GO KELLOG'S, BANANA BOAT, CHEVY, LAND O LAKES, A&W, AND BOUNTY, JUST TO NAME A FEW THAT DON'T SELL FISHING EQUIPMENT. SO I DON'T THINK THAT WOULD BE A FACTOR. THEY ARE SLOWLY PHASING OUT OF STORES THAT DON'T DO SO WELL. THE ONE NEAR ME IS ONE OF THEM. THE STORE MGR TOLD ME SO. Being that I am a store manager they might be phasing out the fishing tackle in stores not near the water there not doing away with fishing tackle.... After seeing this post I called the home office and did some digging if there getting rid of fishing tackle than the store mgr your talking to knows more than I do. But I doubt it HARD TO SAY....YOU TELL ME... WE WENT FROM 2 GUN CASES AND 5 SHELVING UNITS...(2 1/2 ILSES) TO 0 AND 2 SHELVING UNITS (1 ISLE) 80% OF IT IS ON CLEARANCE NOW TOO. WOULD MAKE ME A BELIEVER IF THAT IS HOW IT LOOKS NOW. Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted August 31, 2007 BassResource.com Administrator Posted August 31, 2007 I have this info and am certain it is true!!! 1. Wal-Mart IS quitting the fishing/tackle business. 2.Johnny Morris of Bass Pro fame IS Buying Gander Mountain 3. Johnny Morris IS buying B.A.S.S. This is NOT internet babble but hard facts thru an indrustry insider. Unless I just missed it, I have not seen the Johnny Morris news on BassResource.com yet. 8-) Hey BassChaser57, ever go back to the guy who duped you and beat him about the head with LBH? ;D ...or maybe it's time to come clean with us and admit you were just trying to stir things up around here. : Quote
JCrzy4Bass Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 My Walmart is a great little stop on the way to the local lakes. And everyone of my friends I fish with uses it as a restock source on worms, lures, hooks, and weights. They are usually so quick at selling you can hardly find any weights or split shots where the tags hang. They have a GREAT selection of hooks with most top name brands. They sell senkos there now, have a nice selection of rapala lures, hart and strike king spinners, rebel lures, mepps inline spinners, the basics and most useful stuff. Their rod selection is not that great but they do carry some nice shimano and abu garcia reels. I have noticed their gun section is hurting a bit and they have pulled a lot from the shelves and actually recently seen some of the gun buyers get a little upset at the counter when asking for info. My store is in Woodbridge, Va. They have not pulled anything from the shelves and are only stocking more, as now they have added Bill Dance Videos and Learn Yourself Fishing Videos from some of the pros (ones on throwing crankbaits). I can see it being regional as most guys said. It would make no sense to have just as big a fishing dept in a Walmart store that didn't have water for nearly 30 miles nearby. Every lake, drainage pond, river, and rez has a healthy population of game fish. With as many die hard fishermen there are in my area (fresh and saltwater) I don't think it would be wise for Walmart to trim down or close their fishing section. The profit they get here has to be unreal. Me and my friends probably drop about 100 bucks a month EASILY. Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted August 31, 2007 Super User Posted August 31, 2007 I thought Cabelas owned Gander mountain supposedly they had a deal with gander as to why we dont get there catalogs anymore???!!!!! Quote
Guest avid Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 3. Johnny Morris IS buying BASS. Outrageous!!!!!.......with all the equipment he has he should catch em fair n square like the rest of us Quote
Troutfisher Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 If Wal-Mart shut shut down it's fishing department, which it's not, I would be screwed bigtime, because that's where I buy most of my fishing stuff. There's no BPS in the state, and only one Cabelas, which is a 4 hr drive from here. We do have Dick's Sporting Goods, but I don't get there a lot. Plus, Wal-Mart's gear is cheaper than most. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted August 31, 2007 Super User Posted August 31, 2007 The Wal-Mart and Sams Club up the street from me is being remodeled but is not closed for business. I spoke to one the remodelling agents from Wal-Mart and he said that all Wal-Marts have been zoning their merchadise based on customer demographics (both price and inventory). So that's why one Wal-Mart here in Indy may not have fishing equipment at all and another is well stocked. He also explained that this is happening through out the store not just sporting goods. He gave other examples like milk: $3.75 at my store and $2.99 at another. Another example is Hot Wheels: One store is packed with them while others that have a high traffic area of collectors will have very little stock because the collectors will grab what they want and not touch the rest, leaving an overload of the same cars. As far as my Wal-Mart fishing department, they have about the same lures and terminal tackle but not reels and rods. The display case is gone and all they have are the cheaper reels in plastic, hanging from hooks. Some of the rods they have, have been sitting on the shelf for years. I am not a big fan of my Wal-Mart anyway, so I will buy my tackle some place else. Quote
Fendercaster Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 The Walmart here (Milledgeville, Georgia) has a pretty good tackle selection and comes in very handy since it's open 24 hours. Of course, Lake Sinclair is only five miles up the road and we have no Academy or BPS here. There is a BPS in Macon, an hour away, but for my every week needs, Walmart is fine. I wish they carried more high end rods and reels, but I don't see that happening. With as many fishermen as there are around here, it would be crazy for them to discontinue their tackle department. fishingfourfun Posted September 1, 2007 Posted September 1, 2007 Like all large corporations Walmart is in business for a profit$$$. They have a very sophisticated inventory system. It is my belief that if a store has been selling fishing products well that they would certainly increase the products that are selling well as well as phase out products that were not!! Just my .02 Quote

You're right, they do have a great section. However, I'm also without a car, so I don't get out there a lot. Quote
