stilldontlikeyou Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 Hey everyone! First let me start off by saying Hello to all the forum members!! I just started fishing a couple of weeks ago (I'm 25). While at a private pond in South Hill, Virginia I had my first taste of Bass fishing, now I'm hooked. I didn't even catch anything, I just watched a couple other people fish, and when I got home went out and got a pole, now it's all I think about. Anyway.....back in the city we got these large man made canals/ponds that our community surrounds. It's about a mile and a half long, and about 40-50 yards wide. Trees and bushes line the banks. The water is really clear, and it looks like a sand bottom. There is a lot of turtles and really small 'bait' fish swimming around. My question is you think there may be some Bass in there?? While standing on this little walking bridge it has I noticed this huge fish go swimming under it, and was told it was a cat fish. So far I've spent only an hour out there with a yelllow spinner bait, and had a couple of plops near it, but nothing. Sorry for all the newbie questions, but I'm really excited about my new hobby. 8-) Quote

louisianabassin Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 do you know how long it has been there Quote
stilldontlikeyou Posted August 7, 2007 Author Posted August 7, 2007 Sorry! It's located in Chesapeake, VA. The canal has been there since 1986. ;D The username I've had for years on Xbox Live, and just use it for everything else as well. Quote
louisianabassin Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 i would say theres probaly bass in there if it wasnt stocked birds flying from other ponds, lakes,or rivers sometimes get fish eggs on their feet and carry it to other places and other people may have released fish so i would say most likely Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted August 7, 2007 Super User Posted August 7, 2007 From what you described I'd be surprised if there weren't bass in there. Keep trying, Falcon Oh, by the way, WELCOME Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 7, 2007 Super User Posted August 7, 2007 There probably aren't any bass and even if there are, they're too small to be of interest. I suggest that you find more promising water to spend you're time on. Quote
Bizzo Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 Welcome! As far as the "pond" your describing, it reminds me a lot of a place I fished when I lived near Buffalo NY. This lady had what was basically a ditch in her back yard that measured maybe 30 feet wide and about 75 yards long. I fished it just for the heck of it one day and got 3 bass 3 lbs or bigger right off the bat! I was using a slugo and the bass just hammered it. I would try a senko fished slow if I were you. I would not be at all surprised if you got some decent fish out of there. I sure never thought this ladies "pond" would have fish in it. Quote
Super User Sam Posted August 7, 2007 Super User Posted August 7, 2007 Go get some Nightcrawlers at Wal-Mart, rig them on a #1 gold hook or a 1/0 straight shank hook, and throw them out. Whatever is living in the canal will hit the worm, be it catfish, bass, bream, crappie, bowfin, pike, white perch, etc. Then you will know what lives in the canal. You may also check out some tackle shops to see what they can tell you about the canal and other places to fish in the area, like Mount Trashmore in Virginia Beach. As you know, there are ponds all over the greater Tidewater area so you should not have any problems locating someplace to fish. And regarding your canal, are you talking about the inland canal that goes down to Florida or another canal? I have my map of Chesapeake in the car and I suggest you purchase the ADC map of the area in book form to note all the ponds and canals you can fish. Have fun. Quote
stilldontlikeyou Posted August 8, 2007 Author Posted August 8, 2007 Nah it's not really a canal, I'm not sure what to call it. If you look in the map, around the Greenbriar area and locate the residential area called Mill Lake that's it.....I actually purchased a ADC map book this morning, along with the Virginia wildlife guide to fresh and salt water fishing. These should help a lot. Thanks for all the welcomes!! Quote
