kms399 Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 I am getting really fed up with these people. i realize they are not all complete a holes just the ones i see on the lake. it seems just about every time i go out these people come flying by with in casting distance creating a big wake and d**n near tipping me out of the boat. I have have actually had it happen where i was fishing a spot and these guys set up a course around me like 20 feet from the boat! THEY HAD THE WHOLE OTHER SIDE OF THE LAKE! some times i feel like casting a 1 oz spoon at them as they go by but i know that wont solve anything and it is getting worse, the lakes i go to up north now have so many cabins on them you cant get away from them up there any more either. sorry for the rant I am just sick of these d**n inconsiderate boaters. how do you deal with them? Fullwood Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 it seems just about every time i go out these people come flying by with in casting distance You had the answer within your question, sir. Â Put on a big topwater plug with treble hooks and practice "hitting moving targets." Â Skip a few off of that nice shiny paint job. I'd put a smiley down for the "just kidding" implication, but I'd be lying if I said I don't do this. Quote
=Matt 5.0= Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 When I lived in Ft. Lauderdale, we used to pier fish alot. Our solution for jet ski's coming in too close to the pier was a surf rod with a 5oz diamond sinker tied on the end. Does wonders to fiberglass... Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 I jet ski and water ski but I do both responsibly and respectfully, let's hope noone thinks like you guys when I'm out there. Â I have to work Monday and once I'm out of the emergency room, I have to find you and pay back the favor,....post bail for said actions and get home and shower for an 8:00 start time. I just don't have the time. Rude people are rude people but don't hate all Jet/water skiers just for the sake of it! 8-) Quote
IdahoLunkerHunter Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 The easiest way to deal with it call your sheriff. I have helped issue a couple tickets for vicarious boaters boating reckless and one BUI. Most people don't know the laws and regulations on the water, and how much it ticks people off, that's what the problem is. When your hopped up with 600+cc's between your legs, you make stupid decisions and most people are on one for their first time. The sheriff is really easy to deal with in most cases and they will check out the area that people are driving reckless. I also jet ski, but don't do it around anyone within 2-3 hundred feet Quote
Guttboy Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 I was fishing ALL day at Canyon Lake here in Texas and I can tell you that the jetskiers/boaters were all over the place. Â I dont have a problem with that at all if they are respectful. Â I am respectfull when I boat....I expect the same. Â Even when cruising to a spot or so and I notice folks fishing I slow way down to avoid wake. Â Not everyone does it but I do. As with anything in life there are good and bad people. Â Quote
Cajun1977 Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 umm i cant stand  any  jet skiers  or  ski boat owners 8-) Quote
Guest avid Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 Why single out jet skiers? How many jerks in bassboats have crossed your line, or parked 10 yards away from you, or blasted past you at 60mph or run their boat between you and the structure your fishing or............. well I think you get the picture. There are alot of inconsiderate jerks out there.  Alot of them are bass fisherman. My favorite bass fishin jerk, is the tournament guy who wants me to move from my spot because  he's in a tournament"  like that gives him special privledges.  If I'm fishig a spot I'll move when I'm dam good and ready thank you. Guttboy Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 Avid, I agree WHOLEHEARTEDLY!!!! Â Has had that happen quite a bit...even yesterday! Â However, the "jerks" actually asked if they could pass me up to fish the creek area I was in.....I had no problem as I was SLOW fishing senkos and they were spinnerbaiting it.....after they left the area (5 min)....I had one of my hits for the day and they saw it....funny....as I was SLOW fishing hard...heck I was by myself and learning the Senko style...LOL.....I do give em credit for asking. norm2525 Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 I feel like most of you guys I would like to tie something on and try to hit a moving target but I think the best thing is to call the sheriff. Also, I would suggest night fishing since the jet skis have to be off the water but be careful. We had a collision between a bass boat and ski boat at night last week that left two people dead. It was a terrible accident that could have probably been avoid but they are still investigating. Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted July 17, 2007 Super User Posted July 17, 2007 I don't know why you guys get so torqued about skiers. There is a time and place for everyone. The time and place for skiers is not on my lake while I am there Quote
surfer Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 It's not so much jet skiers specifically, but novice boaters who are also weekend warriors. Â They are in to big a hurry to consider their action affecting other people. Â It is just what they want to do. Â They think as long as you don't collide then no harm done. The best one I have from this weekend was a jet skier coming around a corner to find me sitting directly in his path. Â He panics, let's go of the throttle, then tries to turn. Â For those of you not familiar with jet drive water craft, no throttle no turn. Â So he is coasting right at me with his handle bars full right. Â His eyes and mine are getting bigger and I am motioning to him to get back on the throttle. Â d**n language barrier. he finaly slowed and the panic went away enough to throttle a turn. Boating safety courses should be mandatory. Quote
Super User senile1 Posted July 17, 2007 Super User Posted July 17, 2007 I really get irritated at the pedal boaters. Â They make so much noise with those darned squeaky pedals and it spooks the fish, not to mention the large wakes they produce. Â : Quote
NJfishinGuy Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 the other day i found a nice drop off and threw 3 marker bouys not a big area maybe 4 boat lengths long. anyway this dumb old lady pulling a 10yo kid on ski's comes barreling down the lake and ran over my bouys. she seen them and yet ran right over them maybe 20 feet in front of me i waned to smack the B**ch, then she continued out to a no wake zone and kept going Quote
hamer08 Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 I would suggest lobbying the lakes management (for enforcement or new rules), preferably through a fishing club. These organizations can be very powerful in making changes on public lakes. You can also use these organizations to promote other fish friendly changes. I rarely have to deal with these types of problems, I think in part to a strong visible fishing lobby. Pretty much any lake/reservoir I fish less than 3000 acres has a 10 or 25 hp max limit on them. The larger reservoirs get the recreational traffic. But, you still maybe able to restrict parts of large reservoirs if you have a strong lobby. Good luck and be part of the solution and not the problem. Quote

Before retiring and leaving the San Diego County area in 94, they had already addressed this issue by making lakes "SKI ONLY" on certain weekends, Yep, they alternated days and weekends with skiers and fishermen, also when both are allowed on the water at the same time, you could only go in one direction on the lake.   If you went out, you took the tour of the whole lake, because you would get ticket for coming in wrong. I have lakes that PWC won't even attempt, and I consider those lakes as my prime spots during the summer when PWC are the thickest. I also know that no matter what lake it is, the dam and ohter areas are prime PWC areas, so I avoid them or go very early or night fish. I try to plan on being on the water early to avoid ramp congestion, you know, we bass fishermen can launch 200 boats in an hour and it takes a PWC 15 minutes just to get in and out.   We both have a right to be on the water, so just make an effort to avoid the open areas and give them their few months of the year.   We pretty much have the water to ourselves the rest of the year. Lobbying may only muddy up the water with guidelines for both to follow, and I have seen what lobbying did for the fishermen in San Diego, we lost half our fishing time during the summer months.     They (the county) was just waiting for the war to start so they could impose new fees to generate more revenue. Hookem Matt Quote
NJfishinGuy Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 here in NJ the biggest lake is only 2600 acres andwe have lakes that are only 170 acres that are unlimited HP. the lake where my marker bouyes got ran over was the 170acre unlimited one. so u can imagine about 8 skier boats running circles on this place and half of the lake is lilypads so only about 90 acres is open water Quote
Super User RoLo Posted July 17, 2007 Super User Posted July 17, 2007 On certain lakes, I take along my Extra-Heavy Rod with 80-lb PowerPro Line Quote
flipnsonofapitch Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 I feel you Brother, i live in california and fish near these drunk idiots all the time, we call them LAKE LICE, chuckin lures at these guys could get you into some trouble, unless it was an "accident" best thing to do is buy yourself a loud horn and blast them every time they get to close, they'll get the hint, if not buddy up with another boater and and toss him a long rope submerged underwater, wait until lake lice speeds by and BOOM!! see how low he can limbo... j/k Quote
Ky_Lake_Dude Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 I don't like jet skis/water skiers nor do I like them. They have the same right to use the water for skiing as we do for fishing. If still don't like them then take up night fishing. Quote
nra4life Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 or buy a nice jon boat and go fish some 10hp lakes, the best fishign lakes in my area are definately the 10hp and under lakes, plus its quieter and virtually no boat traffic. fish the lakes with unlimited hp during spring and fall Quote

Actually that may be a reasonable solution if the lake was truly that crowded. But, I'm pretty confident if fishermen don't lobby for their interests, no one else will. Quote
