Don't know if it's been asked before and I'm too lazy to search  ::) BUT,

When y'all go fishing, whether pond or big lake; About how many bass do you average per outting?.....regardless of size.

Of course I fish more ponds than anything, I probably average 10+ bass per fishing trip (All are freed to fight another day). Most range between 1-3 lbs. Just curious if this is about average for an outting?

I generally fish local ponds that take from 1 1/2 - 2 hours to fish from the bank. On weekends when I am not fishing big water, I'll sometimes fish twice a day or 5-6 hours per weekend. I also fish during the week occasionally, especially during the summer. On average I estimate that I catch one bass 5 lbs or better every four to five hours.

That's just it. Some of the guys I work with (who claim to be MASTER ANGLERS) don't believe me when I tell them I catch all the ones I catch....and then I'll invite them to a pond with me....and show them. It's not like I make up some tall tales about catching 12lbs fish or anything. I guess the ponds I go to just have very active bass. The pond behind my house for instance, I went down there for the 1st time to fish this past Sunday and caught 4 bass within 20-30 minutes. The only reason I left is because I lost my only hook to a fish. The next day I went back for about 3 hours and caught 12 bass. Heck I went a month or so ago with my buddy Mike to a private pond that belonged to one of his wife's relatives. We got there at around 6:45AM and by 2PM...between the 2 of us had caught 40+ bass. They were all about the same in size at around 1 lbs.....maybe a couple that went 2-3 lbs. But there's been times we spent all day on a public lake/reservior and only caught 5 between us.

I just assumed that 10+ bass per trip...big or small...was normal.

When fishing ponds I usually average 3 bass per half hour.

Sometimes more; sometimes less; but 3 each half hour is about my average.

Tonight I caught 3 once again.  One nice 2 pounder and two 1 pounders. All in about 30 to 35 minutes.

I could have caught more but I was experimenting with crankbaits, spinnerbaits and drop shotting and did nothing so I went to a Zoom finesse worm and nailed the three.

You know, it really does not matter how many you catch.  All that matters is that you try and experiment and get some confidence in your arsenal of lures and techinques.

I know I can murder them on a wacky Senko - any color. So why keep throwing that rig when I need to continue to get better fishing other baits and techniques?

Now, on a lake or a river, who knows.  I have caught three within an hour and then I have been known to be skunked for 8 hours on the water.  But no matter what happens fishing is better than going to work or school!

my numbers vary from place to place.  The first time I went to a fairly large pond close by my house, I caught 40 bass during about 4 hours of fishing with 2 4lbers and 1 5lber, the others ranged from 1-2.5lbs.  One of my best days ever came at this pond when I caught 2 between 3-4lbs, and 3 5lbers during about a 3 hour period.  I can now expect to catch certain numbers out of individual ponds/ lakes when I go and much depends on time of year and current weather conditions.

I've kept detailed records since 1972 & this is my overall average per 8 hours of fishing

Toledo Bend

Total bass: 22

Total keeper (14 or 2 lbs) bass: 14

Average kicker: 7 lb+

Average 5 bass tournament limit: 26.8 lbs

Pond, Marsh, or Creek

Total bass: 25

Total keeper (1.5 lb+): 9

Average kicker: 3.0

Average 5 bass tournament limit: 11.8 lbs

If I'm gonna spend money going fishing I'll go to the Big Pond  ;)

Recently, my outings have been less than successful--this is on a big lake. But, then again this time of year it is more difficult. But on average I would say between 2-4 hours, 2-3 fish--and I think that's a good average for this lake, so perhaps I'm lying.

I have fished 10 times this season and caught 32 keeper bass, (and some dinks that I don't count).  So, I average 3 keepers per trip.  My best evening so far has been 7 bass, my worst, (three times), has been 1 bass (coincidentally, those three trips are when I brought my 7 y.o. daughter and my 2 y.o. son...).   I would love a 10 bass day, but would have to get a lot more fishing time in - not easy to do with 3 kids and a wife that is jealous of my fishing...

The part that is really incredible is the fact that your average per bass exceeds 5 lbs per fish in tournaments for over 35 years.   :o  Wow.

I'm averaging just under 22 fish per every 8 hours fishing this year, but I'm lucky to break the 5 lb mark two or three times a year.  I haven't kept good records in the past but I don't believe my average quantity has been this high very many times.

im glad someone brought this up.....

i guess im doing something wrong, because i would say, on average, i catch about 3 bass every trip....but sometimes even less, soemtimes a few more.....

40 bass a trip? is that even possible? i meen, are we averaging here? or you really catch 40 fish in 4 hours...

that would meen that you catch 10 an hour? d**n....good job

i dont even know if i would keep fishing if I caught 40 fish.....it would be boring after a while....

i know ponds are much more actiuve, and you catch a lot more, and i do fish spots that are known for a "slow bite" but still......

anyone who catchs 40 fish in an outing needs to turn pro and make some money....

also, my aREA must suck.....iv probably only caught 1 or 2 fish in my LIFE that were even close to 5lbs........

This year for metro lakes, 0. But I go north to a private lake which hardly ever gets pressure. In three days I caught roughly 30 Bass and 19 Pike. Only using Spinnerbaits.

It is probably not the fishing sucks in your area. As time progresses and you learn new techniques you will land bigger fish. Catching big fish consistently comes with experience and time on the water. Back in high school when I first started to get into fishing, I fished about two lures, a spinnerbait and a jig. I was lucky to catch 1-2 fish a day and maybe one 5lb+ fish a year. Now, after about 8 years, time on the water, five full tackleboxes, 7 poles, lots of research and learning an incredible amount of information from everyone on BassResource, I have already this year, landed more and bigger fish from the total fish caught for the first 5 years I started fishing.

2007 - I usually catch between 3-15 fish a day, and one 3-5lb fish every outing.

Time on the water and research has made me into a much better fisherman. My biggest advice is keep your lines wet as much as possible :)

It depends on the bite.  I've gone out on the lake I live on and caught 20+ bass in 3-4 hours.  I've also been skunked fishing on the lke for 8+ hours.  On the small farm ponds I fish, I've never been skunked, but I have had days of only 3 or 4 fish in 5 hours.  My best day on a farm pond was 100+ bass in 5 1/2 hours.

I averaged about 3 per hr on most trips this year. I'm slowly improving qaulity as a I learn the lakes we fish. This morning, I hit 3 nice fish in 4 casts.  Thats when you know your plan has come together.

Different bodies of water affect your average.  Some people simply have better populations to fish.  Others could probably knock 'em dead no matter where they fish.  While my average is good this year, I can bring it down just by fishing Smithville Lake more often.  It is very highly pressured and is a very tough place to fish at times.  Five or six bass in a day is good there, and I have been skunked there a few times over the years.  This is the closest lake to me and if it was the only one I fished, my average would be much lower.  Of course, we can all help ourselves by learning the waters that we fish and what techniques are best there.

When I fished back in the south east I always caught fish on every trip.  Sometimes just one or all dinks but caught something just the same.  I just fished for 12 hours on a lake here in Texas and got nuthin'!  There was a tourney going on and no one was catching.  I did see a lunker while fishing (actually retrieving a snagged bait) but could not land it.  From  some of the locals this lake is hard to fish in summer....Ill keep trying though as it is a blast just the same!  I am going to an electric only lake about 30 miles from my house and will try to fish there (thanks to a Resource member for the support and tips!...Rebasser!).

One thing that I failed to mention.  On the trips in the South East when I said I caught a fish every trip...that is not a lie!  What I failed to mention is that if I got "Skunked" at the lake/river I was fishing I always stopped by my mother in laws place (on the way home in NW FLA) and tossed the line in one of her two farm ponds.  You could catch bass on just a line and hook.  My wife explained that her dad used to catch bass all the time but would "relocate" them to those ponds...they hadnt been fished for over 10 years since he died....those bass must be loving something in there because they sure bite!

Most trips I average 1 per hour.  I'd kill for one of those 10+ fish trips some of you are talking about.  100+ in 5 hours?  Wow!!!

Hi Fatboy!

Yeah you got that right....I would KILL for a bass an hour!  Heck...I may not even go home...Id just keep fishing....if they are biting (any type of fish) I find myself fishing until I am WORN out!
