flyphisher # Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 I was just thinking about this. As far as the fish you are catching over 5lbs and your 8lb+ PB, what do you think/know they were doing when you caught them. Was the fish suspended, shallow(5ft or less), or on the bottom? Holding tight to structure/cover, in it or what? just curious. My 10+ was in 12ft holding in some vegatation. Most others have been on bottom around structure/ hard cover or in a blowdown. Quote
bassbob08 Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 My sons 8.825 was in about 5ft of water holding in some grass,my son swam a 3inch bluegill just above the grass bed and wammmmm. Quote
largemouthslayer Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 10.2 caught on cold 38 degrees day and very windy.......7.8 caught two weeks ago 98 degrees middle of blue bird skies holding in 12 ft off water in grass beds. Maybe I need to fish when the weather is horrible hot or cold? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 13, 2007 Super User Posted July 13, 2007 Well, my response is certainly more speculation than observable fact, but anyway: A couple of my DD bass were suspending, staging or just basically inactive. The bait (6" Senko) was simply placed in EXACTLY the right spot at EXACTLY the right moment. The others were aggressive and actively feeding. All but one (my PB) were caught in water 10'-20' deep. My PB was caught in relatively shallow water (5'-8'), but immediately adjacent to much deeper water. She was actively chasing bluegill and was caught on a Norman Fat Boy, bluegill pattern. As a general answer, if a bait appears immediately in front of a big bass, even if it is otherwise inactive, their is a fair chance she will bite. Otherwise, bigger bass are caught while they patrol their territory or are hidding in ambush. Either way, they are "hunting". Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 13, 2007 Super User Posted July 13, 2007 Every one of them were in grass Quote
BoroBass Posted July 14, 2007 Posted July 14, 2007 Mine was suspended near some stumps underwater. Quote
kms399 Posted July 14, 2007 Posted July 14, 2007 Mine was suspended near some stumps underwater. you know, now that you mention it my PB was underwater too. sorry Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted July 14, 2007 Super User Posted July 14, 2007 Mine was in a small reed patch in about 3' of water, taken on a 1/2 oz jig/craw pitching during "indian summer" conditions in mid Sept at about 8 am. 20' ft away the there was a small underwater gravel point that dropped abruptly into 44'. Most of the bigger fish I get come from weed/rock areas on deep humps (14'-24') in the summer. Quote
BoroBass Posted July 14, 2007 Posted July 14, 2007 Mine was suspended near some stumps underwater. you know, now that you mention it my PB was underwater too. sorry ;D lol, probably should have said underwater stumps instead. My pond has a ton of stumps bother completely under water and sticking out. Quote
jdw174 Posted July 14, 2007 Posted July 14, 2007 My 8-pounder came from a log jam in the mouth of a tiny feeder stream. She hit the spinnerbait twice.....got her on the second cast Quote
