new to bass fishing

First I would like to say that this site is the most informative site I have seen. I have spent the past two weeks reading and trying to absorb as much info as I can. I have a few broad questions I guess. July my family and I are taking a trip to a lake for two weeks of camping, swimming, and most important to me FISHING. I am not new to fishing in general. I grew up fishing salt water and learned most everything I know from others. I went to a local pond and caught a bass on cork n minnow and now I am hooked.

The lake we are going to is a man made resevoir (kerr lake /buggs island lake) that is really deep. I have read that during this time of the year to start relativly shallow in the mornings and move deep (deeper ) as the sun rises and back to the shallows in the evening. I have been looking at maps for good contour lines and structure, but I dont understand them things. My main question is what main baits should I stick with. I know a huge lake isn't the best place to learn, but it is what it is I guess. I am thinking I should pick no more that 2-3 lure types and stick with them as not to get confused. I know I would be crazy to expect to catch a hog or real good numbers, I just dont want to get skunked. I have read a lot and feel more informed , but don't understand a lot of the terminology

Lastly is it safe to troll a crank bait, or should I just find some drop offs and hand crank it at various speeds. I know I have asked a lot and will understand if this is too much. Also I plan on posting any success that I have.

Get some crankbaits, senkos, and lizards and you should be ready to go. Put the lizards on a carolina rig and drag them across points, which is a great tactic for this time of year.

 Even with the heat being what it is (blast furnace) I would still take some top water lures for really early or very late in the day. From what you said, you've never caught a bass on top water. I don't think I've ever talked to anyone that wouldn't rather catch fish on top. It's GREAT!!! Do a search on topwater baits on this forum, a lot of really good information on what type and action of each type. GOOD LUCK!! I just know you are going to be writting when you get home about the lunker you caught...

Welcome Jeremy!

Skunks happen to most of us, even tho not all will admit it.   It's part of fishing.  :'( Just like back lashes (excuse me professional overthrows)  The more you fish, the more you learn.  Every cast.

I can't help much on lures, the guys have covered most of what I use.  Be sure you have some Senko's, I'd never used them until a few weeks ago and I'm hooked!  I've been bass fishing at least 12 yrs and I still expect to catch a hawg every cast.  It doesn't happen often but I still expect to.  When a bass gets off, I try not to be upset (I said try) : unless it's in a tourney (that's different) >.  There's always the next cast.  I wish you a great trip and lots of fish.  Read EVERYTHING on this site you can.  You can NEVER learn it all.                                            deb

Thanks for all of the advice, hopefully when I get back I can make a good post on the fishing at kerr lake and maybe help some folks out.
