Fish Man Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 this may sound very stupid but what is the criteria that makes a body of water a pond or lake such as size, depth, etc Quote
Guest avid Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 I suppose one could go to a dictionary and get the definitions, but I think in most people minds it's all about size. It would be ridiculous to call a 3/4 acre farm pond a lake. And if you have ever seen Lake Erie or the big "O" I doubt you would use the word pond. Interesting question though. Quote
IdahoLunkerHunter Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 There is no definition between the two except a lake is considered larger than a pond. I have always considered a lake to have no vegetation at the deepest point in the lake. Ponds have vegetation growing all through the bottom. If it's deep enough to have no vegetation growing it could and should be considered a lake. Quote
armesjr Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 Scientifically, a pond is any man made body of water where light is found in the entire pond body of water. A lake is any body of water that has a profundal zone; there is as limit of effective light penetration for organisms. Quote

Taliesin Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 Hmm... I can't find the difference from a quick research, but I was always told that less than 10 acres is a pond and larger is a lake. Dictionary definitions just say that a pond is smaller than a lake. Quote
