Here's a couple I've shared many times

Question: what's a fast way to find deep water structure

Answer: look for jugs marking catfish trotlines, every good catfish angler knows you find catfish on structure near deep water.

Question: how do I know what baits to use

Answer: I've learned to recognize every guide boat on Toledo Bend, so if I'm at a marina/launch I simply stroll by eyeing any rods on the deck. You can bet if a guide has it tied on he has been catching with it.

I couldn't even guess at the number of times that I've cut-off my lure on the way to the marina

only to tie on an imposter...Sorry about that  :-[

Ohhhhhh,  I guess my methods aren't so good???

Question: what's a fast way to find deep water structure

I usually tell my fishing partner to get ready to drop the anchor, then kick him overboard.

Next use a variation of the "countdown' method.  I call it the "countup"  If it takes him more than 10 seconds to get back to the surface and shout death threats then you know the water is purdy deep.

Your way sounds easier, but mine is a hella lot more fun.

Another secret: stay away from avid & muddy  ;)

With Muddy y'all fish the same spot over & over; avid volunteered to dive in to check the depth but with that mug he'll scare all the fish.

I have another "secret" that I have seriously used with good success when visiting a new lake.

I drive around the lake on the evening I arrive and look for an old guy fishing alone.

I call this the "old guy fishing alone" method of locating prime fishing spots.

The old guy fishing alone is generally a guy who fishes alot, has fished this lake for years, knows the lake better than anyone and sits on the best spots for long periods of times.

Sometimes you have to whistle or something because they can be so motionless you wonder if they died last week and rigor mortis set in while they are holding the fishin rod (not a bad way to go eh?)

Anyway.....WARNING!!!! - Do not approach this man.   He is NOT friendly.  He believes that any fishing device invented in the last 25 years is a "new fangled gadget" that is ruining HIS fishing.

He further believes that anyone who was not born in the local county, is a "dam outsider" that is ruining HIS fishing.  He probably fishes live bait but may have a "rubber" worm.  He will be fishing with an old round Abu Garcia baitcaster.

He is NOT a mook.

My "secret" is a Hummingbird depth/fish finder.I'm really a shallow water angler, but the challenge of deep water fishing keeps things interesting.I'd be lost out there without it.

I fish most everyday on a lake that has two older men that fish everyday by themselves. Neither has ever said a word till about two weeks ago. One drives his boat by and said "hows it going ?" I replied "slow" he says back "Rapala Shad Rap # 5 or # 7 " I ask "what color?" his responce and I swear this is great "son i been a feild tester for Rapala for over 25 year and colors are not for the fish they are for you wallet .....origanal black and silver" .....Hope I didn't just tick the BAIT MONKEY off. >:(

Man, I would certainly agree that color is not particularly important most of the time, but sometimes we have all been in situations where and exact shade, contrast or feature is critical.

Weeeeeellll, I ain 't THAT old, but I do sometimes behave like a real cranky old fart, that sounds pretty much like the way I answer when somebody asks me with what color I 'm ketchin them:

Q .-"What color are you using ?"

A.-Black

Q.-"I 've been using watermelon red flake "

A.- Watermelon red flake is an excellent choice

Q.- " :-? ...... and why are you using black ?

A.- Black is an excellent choice, so is watermelon red flake, green pumpkin, white, cotton candy, red shad, tequila sunrise ........ you name it.

Q.- " and why are you carrying a rainbow of colors in your baits ? :-/ "

A.- because I like all them purty colors, ya know, monkey business. ::)

When I get a chance, I visit the local tackle shop.  I look at the wall of plastics.  They are usually organized by brand and size.  I look for the lure, size and colors that are all picked out.  Then I pick something in my tackle box that closely resembles the color, size and lure.  (but I always try to buy something, even if its just a pack of hooks, in order to support the local business).

Note to self:

Don't throw the anchor out in Avid's boat while Muddy is trying to find structure with his boat ;)!

Too bad,  we could use the chum

I go to the local tackle shop also.  But I normally walk right up to the front counter and tell them I am new on this lake and looking for advice.  They get to sell me a lure and usually give me tips on how, and where at the same time.  I doubt they have ever given me the honey hole, but it beats trying to map out the lake if they are willing to point you in the right direction.

It helps if behind the counter is the same old man that was fishing alone in avids post.
