I'm miserable right now, I passed up a fishing trip to go to a Local Reservoir and rent a boat with a fishing bud, due to a very bad sprained ankle.. For the past 2 and half weeks I've had bronchitis so no fishing, then on my last day of antibiotics, I severely sprained my ankle (pic below). So I'm going on almost a month of fishing, and then this great opportunity comes..

Keep in mind, I've NEVER Fished from a boat before, NOT ONCE. Bank fisherman for the past several years. So when this guy invited me you know how I must have felt.

Is it just me, or am I crazy? I keep feeling like I should have gone, regardless of everyone else saying I need to stay and let my ankle get better. My entire foot and ankle is bruised and swollen, and I'm not supposed to put weight on it for 7 days (today is the 4th day).

Would you have gone regardless? I want to feel like I made the right choice by staying home, but I just keep feeling like I should have gone..

Tough one.  I probably would of gone, but i've sprained my ankle that bad or worse twice playing basketball, so I know it hurts.  If you said no you probally realize it wasn't in good enough condition to be messing around a boat on.  Sorry for the bad luck :-/.

Only you can be the judge of going...from the look of it i probably wouldn't have either.I'd rather be 100% healthy,i'm sure you'll be able to rent one again soon enough.

That's the thing, if an ankle doesn't heal properly, then it causes bad long term affects. Thus I stayed home. I still am pist that I stayed home though.. I wish I would have gone.

Things you do with your body while young, you will pay far when you're older   ;)

Dude,

Trust me on this one.

You absolutely did the right thing.

Your ankle is the size of a grapefruit.  You can't mess with this stuff.

Your young and other opportunities will come up.

But you ony have one body.

Take care of it.

You defiantly did the right thing.  I messed up both my ankle and my knee in basketball, and never sat down and let it heal properly.  They still hurt me to this day(mostly my knee) and I haven't played ball in two years.

There is only one thing I learned from basketball:  a sprained ankle hurts like heck, but the bucket of ice is a whole lot worse :-[

Yeah you definately don't want to mess with your ankles. I've sprained my right ankle probably 5 or 6 times in my life, twice in the past 6 months (the first time I actually tore some ligaments in it playing soccer - looked a lot like your picture, the second just a standard sprain) and it still hurts sometimes. The thing is with ankles, even if you let it heal 100%, you're at a much higher risk for repeat injuries for life pretty much.

Don't take any chances, just wait it out (however hard that may be).

Yah, the doctor said that the ligaments are just ripped pretty bad, but not torn all the way through, which is the reason yours probably looked similar to my ankle.

I did this playing soccer too, pathetic part was, ball was out of play, and I just took a step forward and put my foot down wrong and RIPPP my ankle just shot up in pain all the way into my knee..

Now my entire foot is swollen, and bruised all over. Looks like my foot was jumped by 10 angry gang bangers.

None the less, thank you all, helped me realize I made the right decision.

I would have gone if it was "Just a sprain". Doctors say you can walk on a sprain a day after just wrap it up with a bandage.

I was given STRICT guidelines by 2 seperate doctors. One said I cannot put ANY weight on for 7-10 Days, the other said no weight for 5-7.

If it was "just a sprained ankle", you bet your butt I would a been out there yesterday and today!

Guy called me though, said today wasn't that great, pretty slow day. So I don't feel as bad.

Let's see... :-/...sitting in a boat with my ankle wrapped or sitting in front of the computer.  :-/

I've had surgery on both feet and still managed to fish.

yeah my sprains were never that bad..the first one looked like a baseball under my skin but that was the worst one....and it WILL cause trouble in the long run...that first one is the only time i went to the doctor and followed his instructions, every time after that i continued to walk and do what ever...now i am almost 30 and they cause me alot of trouble...just today while walking in the parking lot i stepped on something uneven and hit the deck....they give out very easily now

See, that's what I'm trying to avoid. I never believe what the doctor says, but hearing it from others, helps me. Thank you tons.

Today I went to work, and it hurts like hell now. Hopefully I'll be ready to hit the water this weekend!! Haven't been fishing in a month.

I've had a few sprains that look as bad as that so I know I wouldn't have gone.  I would have been like you and wished I had but you did the right thing.  Trying to walk on that would have made it worse.  So ice it down wrap it up and start wearing ankle braces or ace bandages that is what I do. ;)

I don't get it - how do you use your ankle to cast and retrieve?  -- no really, heal up quick and get back out there.

You'd be surprised how much pain is involved when you make the slightest movements the first week or so after you hurt your ankle that bad. I was pretty much confined to the couch with my leg propped up for a whole week (until the swelling went down enough that I could fit in a moon boot which I had to wear for 3 more weeks), even getting up and on my crutches to go to the bathroom was miserable. I can't imagine trying to get in a boat and keep it safe/immobile for the duration of a fishing trip.
