Brookie Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 What is the worst injury you experienced on a fishing trip? Mine was when I was sliding my rod in the truck and the hook came off the eyelit and slid past the barb all the way into my hand. Quote
largemouthslayer Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 I was trying to break a fish's neck one time by dropping a rock on it's head....only problem was the fish was on my foot. You ought to try it I bet it hurts wosre than the hook story. Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 Tore open my own scalp when casting overhead with a long leader. Also broke my foot jumping rock-hopping to a better casting spot. The scalp hurt more, but the foot kept me from fishing longer. It's kind of a tie. Quote
flyphisher # Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 Carpel tunnel in both arms that lead to surgery on both the end of last year....... Quote
[[J4cks0n.Shr3dd3r]] Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 My worst would be sticking my hand in a pike's mouth. Bad idea. :'( Quote
mdgreco191 Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 two months a go an itty bitty channel cat my fiancee caught wiggled hard in my hand when i was taking the hook out and shoved one of its dorsal fins a whole inch into my palm!! I had to slowly pull out the fin and it hurt like hell cause I didn't want it to break off inside my hand and cause a horrible infection. From now on I pull out a glove or am real careful with cats of all sizes! Quote
jaskoh Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 Not sure if you call this an injury or not but seemed like a near death experience at the time. I was 15 fishing the white river in northern Arkansas for trout. I decided to venture down the river a little ways by myself (1 maybe 1.5 miles). It was around 25 degrees outside and I didn't here the siren to let me know the dam was opening up. I noticed the water rising and headed to the shore but I didn't make in time and the water went above my waders. I had to hike back the mile to get to our car. All I can remember is not being able to control my body movements in the car ride to our cabin. I saw a picture of my and I looked like casper the ghost with the deepest purple/blue lips Ive ever seen anyone. It was worse than the alive fisherman they pull out of the Bering Sea from "The Deadliest Catch" Well not really, those guys are nuts and have my respect. Quote
George Welcome Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 Three broken ribs from a fall in the water while shooting a show with Bob Dillow.l Bob's question: did you get that on film? it would make a great blurb. I told him to stuff it. Quote
Super User senile1 Posted May 30, 2007 Super User Posted May 30, 2007 Other than bad sunburns, hooking myself, or getting all wet, I've never had what I would call a major injury while fishing. Knock on wood. Quote
Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted May 30, 2007 Super User Posted May 30, 2007 Not really an injury but .... Falling in 40 something degree water with no pfd. Luckily I had just launched the boat and was basically still on the boat ramp. The water was only 4 ft deep so I could stand, but even that took all I had. Your body just doesn't work when water is that cold. It was a real eye opening experience. Went home took a warm shower and immediately went to get a auto-inflate PFD that I now wear at all times until the water at least reaches the 60's. Quote
Fish Man Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 this past february we were fishing and it was cold and windy,i went to cast and i didnt see my lure and saw slack line, then i felt what was like a punch to the back of the head and felt back to find out my crankbait was stuck in my head,it pinned my hat to my head and after 2 hours or so of trying to get it out we went to the ER to get it removed P.S its now one of my favorite lures ;D here is a pic Quote
Super User RoLo Posted May 30, 2007 Super User Posted May 30, 2007 > Your Worst Fishing Injury Losing the biggest pike of my life after the third acrobatic leap! You can't imagine the pain, and it lasted for days > :'( Roger Quote
Guest avid Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 Tennis elbow and torn rotator cuff. Second surgery scheduled for august. Quote
Rattlinrogue Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 I fell in my boat once because of some really rough water.I tried to catch my fall as I hit the floor and broke two fingers. Quote
Super User Catt Posted May 30, 2007 Super User Posted May 30, 2007 mdgreco191 dude aint you ever heard of a catfish flipper? You aint gotta touch no stinking catfish Worst fishing injury was when I bent down to plug in my trolling motor and tore cartilage in my knee requiring surgery. Quote
Gotta Love It Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 Hook in the finger! ER visit and back fishing in less than 2 hours! Quote
Gorgebassman Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 Getting my cheek and ear pierced by treble hooks on a crankbait by another angler. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted May 31, 2007 Super User Posted May 31, 2007 It was back during the war in Viet Nam. I was stationed on a patrol boat in the Mekong Delta. One of our fighter planes missed its target and dropped a napalm bomb into the river very close to our boat. The explosion singed my eyebrows and the hair on my arms, but we had fried fish for weeks afterwards. Would I lie? Quote
Fendercaster Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 The usual, hook in the leg requiring a trip to the ER. Also, Sunday of last week I was in the boat for eleven hours. My feet were so badly sunburned I couldn't put shoes on until Thursday. Now, with the peeling, my feet look like they have leprosy! Quote

It was worse than the alive fisherman they pull out of the Bering Sea from "The Deadliest Catch" Well not really, those guys are nuts and have my respect. One time my friend and I were fishing about 4 miles below the dam of allatoona. I was tempted to wade out there for a while. Luckily I didn't. About 5 mins later, the dam opened up. Cannot here sirens down that far. It rose 3 feet in a matter of seconds, and moved so fast, my two ounce pyramid sinker wouldn't hit bottom. Now, 3 miles down from the dam is a 12 ish foot high spillover dam. Above it is commonly used for fishing from jon boats. Dad is never worried about going out when we don't know about power release. He has never seen the dam open up it seems. No way I would be out there in a jon boat, with moving water that strong and fast. In a canoe, starting out below the spillover dam I would, but not a jonboat. Ya know, I am always griping about how I never get to fish. Once a month AT THE VERY BEST. Went from October to February, and down in GA everyday is a day for fishing, as the water never gets much below 40, and we don't have ice. Well, the less I fish, the less I get injured. I think the worst was when I got stung by 2 yeller jackets in the flesh between toes. Quote
R520dvx Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 Had a crankbait come flying at me and stuck a treble hook ... past the barb in my groin area. My buddy refused to help me remove it !!!! Quote
benpsut Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 ha, just this afternoon. Went to grab a bluegill off the crank we were using, went to get a hold of him and he shook that crank loose right into my pointer finger. Whole hook, Barb and all. It f***ing hurt, took a while to get it out. Had to whip out my leatherman and just yank it out. Im sure the whole lake heard my scream. it's swollen now so im sure its infected. Im keeping it covered with neosporin on it. Quote
Super User grimlin Posted May 31, 2007 Super User Posted May 31, 2007 I was 10 at the time, using a spincaster, somehow the line got twisted and when i went to make a cast about 10 feets it made a dead stop in midair and came right back at me.Got me in the arm as i was blocking my face.Went home tried to get it out and my father ended up just saying forget it we are going to the clinic. It costed him $130....lol Since then 22 years later i've been lucky and haven't had another accident. P.S. since i've gotten heavy into fishing again, one thing i do bring is my sunglasses...i won't leave home without them on a fishing trip now. Quote
eastkybass Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 When I was about 4-5 years old my mom, dad, sister and I were out crappie fishing on Cave Run lake. My Mom takes the rod and reaches back as far as she can to make a cast. As she goes forward she notices that she can't see her bait going out. She turns around and there I stand with the hook through my right ear. My Dad said that she just about fell out of the boat from the shock of it and all I can say is Mommy you hooked me. To this day that is the only time I have ever had my ears pierced. ;D Quote
