Ky_Lake_Dude Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 Ok, I have a similiar question. My girlfriend's lake is so over populated that I caught 25 bass all in the 10 inch range in about 30 minutes. I am looking for a humane way to get rid of these bass. I would really like to transport a lot of them to in my subdivision lake that has nothing but very very small bluegill in it. But I have no way of doing this. What is the best humane way to control populations of bass? They are t0 small for eating even. I strongly believe in catch and release but I feel that this lake is so over populated it might be unhealthy for the entire fishery. Any ideas??? Good question , I have the same problem , my lake has a few big bass but the majority are starving to death , I am ready to have a fish killing spree and feed the skinny ones to the coons , My bass are suffering in my opinion . Unless someone has a better idea than coon bait? I love to eat fish but not when they look like the ones I have been catching lately Rig a good sized cooler with an aereator and put the bass in there with enough water to transport them to a larger lake Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted May 25, 2007 Super User Posted May 25, 2007 Here's how I would do it. Place fish on top of foot. (keeps the dirt off) Take a 5 lb or bigger rock. Smash with maximum force. Bass will die real quick. Now that's funny. I can't believe nobody has gotten this one yet. lol Quote

msmonroe Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 Take along a couple of boys ages 6 - 10. Now that's just cruel. I think Brookie was looking for a humane way to kill the fish! ;D Quote
cpvenom Posted May 26, 2007 Posted May 26, 2007 The best way to kill a fish would probably be to put it on ice. It slows their matabolism and eventualy they fall into a permanent sleep. I cant think of a more humane way to kill one. Quote
jomatty Posted May 26, 2007 Posted May 26, 2007 if you need something cheap to transport fish i would just get one of those large plastic tubs from wally world and add an aerator. this should keep them alive and healthy for a fairly long time to be transported. i know that member john j has a similar set up he uses to transport fish to his pond and he seems to have luck with it. captbob Posted May 26, 2007 Posted May 26, 2007 Avid: I'd rate it a toss up between those who want to eat the fish and those who want the fish to eat. Brookie: Just a tip--stick with trout, you've been spoiled for Bass--Always put on ice to preserve the flavor. CB--FL Keys & N.Y.---Guess where the Bass are caught?? Quote
Brookie Posted May 26, 2007 Author Posted May 26, 2007 Just putting thise out there, I don't know if ill eat bass alot ive just never tried it and would like to eat the first good sized one I catch to try it. If I don't like it I wont keep any more and if I do ill bring 1 home every time I go out. Quote
PILL Posted May 26, 2007 Posted May 26, 2007 A nail through the head usually kills a catfish and if that kills one of those tough guys it will certainly kill a bass. Quote

I can't believe nobody has gotten this one yet. lol I think the key is to not get any dirt on the bass by placing it directly in top of foot. The best way to kill a fish is probably to just put it on ice and let it die. You can always just throw unwanted bass on the bank. Its better to kill some then to have them all starve. Quote
senko_77 Posted May 27, 2007 Posted May 27, 2007 I keep alot of brookies I catch and I always kill them if I plan to keep them but what is really the best way to kill a bass you want to keep. With brookies I usually put them on a rock and hit them over the head with something or I break their neck but I think this would be harder to do with a bigger bass. Here's how I would do it. Place fish on top of foot. (keeps the dirt off) Take a 5 lb or bigger rock. Smash with maximum force. Bass will die real quick. You know the sad thing is, I had to read it a couple times to figure out what was wrong with that. The 1st time I was like..."yeah, I guess that could work" but then I was like..."wait, something is wrong about that" God I'm not to bright. Quote
