I love that chart, I have the same one and check it everyday.

The fishing reports in the local paper around here are based on what the tackle shop owner (who is interviewed) has too much of!!

If he's got 2000 fluke rigs in the shop, guess what,....the fluke bite is "red hot"

Not reliable at all.

I think KU has one of the best reports I have ever seen. Much better than the "too many flukes in stock" graph that LBH gave me and the color c-lector I have. :P Not quite as accurate as the lake is solid (frozen) lake is water (not frozen) report that I use but still quite accurate. ;)

Very nice find KU.

It would be nice to get an unbiased fishing report, but in the days of sponsors and money that is probably not going to happen. A local guide service around where I fish puts out a weekly report as well. It is kind of funny that the bass are only biting the baits/lures that are on his sponsor page. In his defense, if I got to guide for a living I would say and do the same thing. Only real information I take from it is water clarity, water level, and release rate at the dam.

Unfortunately, I think this is true for many areas.  I still look at the reports in my area, but I take much of their information, other than water temperatures and lake levels, with a grain of salt.  The percentage of the time that the report has matched what I actually discovered on the water is very low.  Even accurate reports are often a few days old before you read them.  Situations can change quickly.

LBH beat me to the punch ;)

Tackle shop owners, fishing guides and fish camp proprietors are all motivated by self-preservation (I'd be too).

With a little understanding on our behalf, there's no reason to take every glowing fishing report for face value.

Case in point,

Some time ago, I decided to hit Cypress Lake, an under-exploited gem and part of the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes.

Searching the web for data on Cypress Lake I ran into a couple of very optimistic fishing reports (with a grain of salt of course).

From the gist of the reports, big bass were jumping into the boat.

After launching my boat in Lake Toho, I ran over to the lock at South Port Canal.

The lock-operator lives right there on the property, and I might add, has no motive for coloring the fishing report.

While waiting for the stall level to meet pool level, we had a short conversation. The lock op told me that the pool level

of Cypress was awfully low, and barely navigable. Then he added that bass fishing was horrible, some of the worst in memory.

He also told me that Ish Monroe was recently skunked back there. To make a long story short, Ish wasn't the only one :-[
