Cravin Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 Two or three weeks ago I posted my 7yr old sons First bass. since then he has stole one of my reel covers for his 33, robbed my box of any cool looking lure he could find and has been practicing pitching in the front yard(yes with a 33). Yesterday he rattled all the way to the hole, Had full conversations across the pond at the top of his voice. gave fishing tips to my friends son who we took along, And talked my ear off on the way home. To top it off he out fished me landing 7 bass to my 4 and 2 crappie on two lures I thought wouldn't be that productive. the coolest things he said where.... "Man Dad! I think I could be fishing with the Pro's!" "Now I know why you and Papaw love fishing, it's exciting!" "That's the most funnest time I EVER HAD!" and right before bed " Thanks Dad, That was really fun!" What a great day! Now I'll get a little more serious about buying a boat. Quote
wickyman Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 Fishing pole/reel- $80.00 Fishing lures from your box that you thought you thought would never be productive- $5.00 Gas to get to the pond-$25.00 Fishing with your son at the pond, priceless! For everything else, there's Bassmaster's card! haha I hope I have a son, one day. And I hope he enjoys fishing as much as I do. Very cool! Almost enough to bring a tear to your eye! Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted April 23, 2007 Super User Posted April 23, 2007 That's fantastic. Sounds like you are doing a good job. Days like that are very special. Falcon Quote
Super User senile1 Posted April 23, 2007 Super User Posted April 23, 2007 Cravin, there's no greater feeling than the feeling that comes from turning your kids onto something like fishing, and seeing them enjoy it. Quote
eastkybass Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 That is awesome. My kids love to go through my boxes. And anytime they out fish you there interest just grows and grows. Hold on to those moments because they are the best ones. Quote
clipper Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 Sounds like you are on the right track. Keep up the good work . You may have a natural born fisherman there. My son has always outfished me, even when he was 8. I think it is in their attitude. Quote
jomatty Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 my son is only four but give him a couple more years and we will schedule the "sons of bas resource fishing tournament". should be a blast when all the pros get together. my sons latest thing is to refuse to use live bait unless they are "guppies" he catches in his little scoop net. pretty uppity for a 4 year old Quote
snapperd1 Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 That's pretty cool taking your kid with you. My son is just now getting into the fishing thing. This is the first year I took him on the boat. He is already starting to outfish me. I really believe it is thier attitude towards fishing that makes them so good. They choose the bait by what they like. They don't try and match the hatch or any patterns, just pick and cast. These are the best years of thier lives so enjoy them now. TD Quote
logger Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 I can't wait until my son is old enough to take fishing for that exact reason right there. Great story. Quote
Lunkers0 Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 That is an awesome story! My son is 1 year old and I can't wait to take him fishing. Quote
ring fry Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 "Thanks Dad, that was really fun" You will remember that for as long as you live. Quote
Cravin Posted April 24, 2007 Author Posted April 24, 2007 I can't help but smile every time I think of it. It really surprized me because he's caught a few perch and crappie in the past but nothing set him off till his first bass which was caught on a crappie jig. This time I set him up for bass and it paid off. I guess I got lucky he likes it so much,From now own I think fishing will be a a double payout for me. The reward was much bigger than I though it would be. Thanks for the kind words guys. I hope everyone here has had the luck of experiencing this or will in the future! Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted April 25, 2007 Super User Posted April 25, 2007 That put a smile on my face. Quote
RecMar8541 Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 Man stuff like this is so good to read. 1 you have set a pattern for him, giving him something constructive that will keep him from trouble for years to come. 2 you have set up a common denominator, a mutual ground you and he will share in years to come when sometimes you dont see eye to eye. 3 memories, the greatest of all!! now pics man pics, lets see some of his whoppers!!! great going! The Unabasser Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 great stuff, pleased to hear he has taken a huge interest...now as recon said more pics!!! Quote
bassman1282 Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 now...swallow your pride, get out your wallet and buy a d**n boat dude. hook him for good. Quote
Cravin Posted April 25, 2007 Author Posted April 25, 2007 Yeah I remembered the camera just about the time he landed the first fish! My phone has probably the worst camera built in it. I'm sure he'll twist my arms this weekend and force me to take him back....maybe I bring the video camera and get some footage posted on his technique so we will know how a small Pro does it! Quote
dickenscpa Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 I've lurked here for a while, but this post made me join so I could post about my son's first fish. I thought I'd never fish again after my best friend died at 32. My 4 yr old asked me to take him fishing back in November. Well, if anyone got me back into it, it would be my son. Between Nov and March, we fished every chance we could. Didn't get a nibble, didn't even get robbed. He never got bored, never said Daddy take me home. We'd stay 4-5 hours. My wife would pack us a lunch and sometimes we'd walk back to the truck and eat and take a nap in the back. I started getting those quotes too: You're the bestest Daddy You're my hero (My favorite) I'm glad I picked you for my Daddy when I was little (Funniest) After not getting anything close to a bite, I bought a used bass boat that I could pay cash for. We've had a ball. If it's just me and him, he fishes mostly. If Mamma comes too, then I fish also. It wasn't long that I pulled out a 13" bass. He went crazy! I think he thought fish were a figment of my imagination!LOL! I hired a new person to help at the office and I leave an hour earlier, but because of better traffic conditions, I get home about 1:45 earlier. Last Wednesday I come home from work and grab him and we take the boat out. He's using a little jig on his Scooby-Doo rig and I'm periodically tossin' a 6" blue lizzard on a baitcaster. He asked to cast mine once. He birdnested it, but hauled in a 9" bass (barely bigger than the lizzard.LOL!) in the process. I was so proud. We got home and he ran in screaming to my wife, "I caught the best fish in the world with a blue lizzer!" My wife told me later that night to be extra good to him because she lost her baby boy, he's a full fledged Daddy's boy now. She told me about how he talks about me all the time while I'm at the office. Made me feel like I was doing my job with the little blessing God gave me. I bought one of those outdoor fire pit things Saturday and I built a fire in it last night and we ate dinner outside and roated marshmallows. Out of the blue he says, "I eat Johnsonville brots, that's what Hank Parker eats." I laughed so hard. Quote
Banor Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 You just cant put a value on life experiences like that for our youth. The long term beneficial impact just can not be measured. 5 thumbs up guys!! Truly awesome, B Quote
rbarkerjr Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 What a great story. I'm taking my 5 year old out to the lake tomorrow for his first fishing trip. He's been out on the boat before and even held a small bass last summer. Now he's dying to go fishing with me. He doesn't know it yet, but tomorrow is his big day. I can't wait. ;D Quote
