Super User roadwarrior Posted April 6, 2007 Super User Posted April 6, 2007 Well, it's hard for me to believe that people fall for some of these scams, but lots of people apparantly send thousands to Nigeria every year. Good catch George and thanks for the heads-up. Quote
George Welcome Posted April 6, 2007 Author Posted April 6, 2007 My latest reply to this numbskull: I would also like this to be a memorable trip for you. The moment your check clears I will send on your monies less a 25% handling fee. Please be sure to include the handling fee for the total monies. It is customary to tip fishing guides and the usual is 25%, however you can make it larger if you desire. Quote
Guest Bountiful_Waters Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 There are a couple of issues here. I am now a Financial Planner, but was a Narcotics Investigator before. This could easily be money laudering. There are many ways criminal  minds try to get money into the US. A "handling" fee to a money launderer would be acceptable. I arrange trips fishing on the side and have been contacted many times from overseas wanting to charge a trip. They in turn will want a refund in form of a check written on a US bank when something comes up. Be careful, you are right about them preying on the small business owners. Quote
Guest avid Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 The minute I saw the part about him including his "agents fee' the red flag went up. I love it when people say to me "All you gotta do is.............." Â It is one of the great sources of amusement in my life. His mistake was that he picked a wiley ole veteran like yourself George. I wonder how he would have fared with a new guy just starting out and hungry for business? Quote
Super User senile1 Posted April 6, 2007 Super User Posted April 6, 2007 Well, this scam is understandable. Â You all know that we fishermen/women are just a bunch of dumb ol' hicks anyway, right? Â Who better to scam than us? Â Good thread, George. Â The lengths these people will go to amazes me. Â Quote
Panamoka_Bassin Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 As always, George is a great source for information, even boyond the tangible realm of fishing. Â Its a sad state of affairs that we have to be on top of things like this, but with a watchdog like George Welcome the job is a little bit easier. Quote

zara spook Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 I saw one a few weeks ago about a group of scammers that were cold calling old folks and pretending to be their grandchildren asking them to wire them money through Western Union...made me sick to my stomach. Quote

I actually recorded this and just watched the second show with the confrontation last night. Â It's too bad it was in another country. Â I would have liked to see them bring in some Sopranos-like characters and beat the living s$%^ out of the guy. Â Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted April 8, 2007 Super User Posted April 8, 2007 That is just nuts. Â I feel bad for those that do get scammed. Quote
clipper Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 At the last weigh in of the tournament cheaters will be banned from all future tournaments, have their boats and equipment confiscated and given to those they cheated, and then thrown in the lake - and the lake will be on fire. Quote

Claude Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 Well, it's hard for me to believe that people fall for some of these scams, but lots of people apparantly send thousands to Nigeria every year. Good catch George and thanks for the heads-up. Yeah my cousin did, and went to jail for trying to cash them. Quote
George Welcome Posted April 21, 2007 Author Posted April 21, 2007 This idiot Bob Wilson actually sent me check: drawn of the Frontenac Bank in Mo. What a nitwit. Of course the check is bogus although the bank is real. According to their personnel, they are on the hunt for this jerk. Mr. Wilson read the post on these pages and actually told me he was disappointed and that my remarks were slanderous. Well, as it turns out his sending me a bogus, fraudulent check is quite the series of crime. Mail Fraud and Forgery just to name a couple. Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted April 21, 2007 Posted April 21, 2007 Pssttt George You Wanna buy a watch Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted April 21, 2007 Posted April 21, 2007 You just missed a great deal on a few Rolex's in the flea market!! Slanderous,...funny. Â The extent some crumbs will go to......he sure is a stickler for the "never admit guilt" creedo Quote
Guest avid Posted April 21, 2007 Posted April 21, 2007 Mr. Wilson read the post on these pages and actually told me he was disappointed and that my remarks were slanderous. The truly unbelievable part, is that this sociopath no doubt really believes that you slandered him. The fact that he is commiting multiple felonies has no bearing to him. I mean after all George, don't you realize that even thieves have feelings? Â :'( Â Quote
