Super User Catt Posted April 6, 2007 Super User Posted April 6, 2007 This little creek is loaded with Kentucky Bass; my member challenge is to catch a bass on crank baits. What bait & technique? Quote
Davefromwarwick Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 i would t6hrow into those eddies or have the crank run right by them, the bass chill in the eddies and wait for food to go buy then dart out grab the food and go back, it saves them energy. Quote
flyhatch Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 one of those rebel craws run it thru the back sides of rocks where there is a current break im bettin there is a smallie waiting for it Quote
Garnet Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 Fishing rivers is all about reading current and understanding your species relationship to current. I don't know Kentucky's but as soon as 1 is caught I would start building. Infront of that pile of rocks will be fished by everbody but if you get a bite it's important to how much current was present and keep building. Bandit 100 square bill. Garnet Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 I agree with the Bandit 100, would even go with a bandit 200. If that doesn't work, Mepps Black Fury#3 with red dots... Quote
Jeff_NHBA Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 I would try one of Storm lures Hybrid crankbaits like the Thunder Core Scoot N' Craw or a Wildeye Soft Shad. Both are crankbaits but also have some of the advantages of soft plastics. Good luck! S Quote
Super User senile1 Posted April 6, 2007 Super User Posted April 6, 2007 Catt, do you have any of the older, original Wiggle Warts? They work great on shallow spotted bass in current. Quote
Ranger364 Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 One word, CHOMPERS!!! 1/8 oz to 1/4 oz Standup head depending on how fast the water is running. Skirt grub. Watermelon Red is my favorite!!! Smallies and Big Kentuck's Can't resist. Good fishing, Quote

Good fishing, Ranger364v, you must have missed the statement in the original post that Catt was challenged to fish for bass with crankbaits. Just a head's up. I skim posts sometimes and miss things too. Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 I missed it too when suggesting mepps as my secondary bait... I would stick with Bandit 100s, 200s, Chartruese Back, white sides. Quote
bassnleo Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 Mann's Baby 1 minus cranked across current, try to deflect it off of rocks. Quote
slarose20 Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 I don't know kentucky that well but most rivers are similiar. Read the current and like a previous poster said focus on those eddies. I personally would throw a lipless crank (crawfish RED) in this case. Rattle Traps are my favorite so im a little biast . Good luck to ya SteveL Quote
Ranger364 Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 Okay Okay Daiwa Peanut series would be great. Quote
Super User Catt Posted April 6, 2007 Author Super User Posted April 6, 2007 Toro Creek is located below the Toledo Bend levee; it is used for flood control when the lake level needs to be dropped with out opening the main generating gates at the Sabine River Dam. The water temperature stays in the upper 40's due to the fact the water is coming from a spill way at bottom of the levee which is 110' deep. The creek has a huge population of Kentucky Bass, limited Largemouth, and some Stripers. It gets little fishing pressure to speak of with most visitors canoeing, kayaking, or swimming. Gates Closed Gates Open Quote
Guest avid Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 that creek sure is purdy. I would go with the ratltrap. 1/4 oz. I would make a quatering cast upstream and reel it down and accross the current and into the eddies downstream. Quote
Shakes Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 I agree with Avid's technique. Completely. I would prefer throwing a Lucky Craft RC 3.5 in Copper Green or American Shad. Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 Not to derail the thread... but, I stole the second picture and made it my background. Quote
Super User Catt Posted April 7, 2007 Author Super User Posted April 7, 2007 Avalonjohn44, that's ok the first is my wall paper Toro Creek is my second favorite fishing hole; the wife/kids will swim while I wade fish. Of course this is what happens when I wade fish! Quote
bassmaster8100 Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 Anywhere theres current break that is where your gonna find the bass looking for an easy meal. I would try a Manns ghost grey crank, square bill fished very slow, stop and go technique. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted April 7, 2007 Super User Posted April 7, 2007 Don't know if you're a spinning rod guy or not, but here goes. Long rod. light line and either a shallow Shad Rap or original floating Rapala. Cast way upstream and twitch it along with the current, letting it pop back up on top every two or three twitches. If you can bring it back to you so that it swirls into an eddy, hang on. Cheers, GK Quote
t bend tex Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 catt what's the best way to get to the creek? Can it be fished with both texas and louisiana License? larry g Quote
Super User Catt Posted April 8, 2007 Author Super User Posted April 8, 2007 Larry, take R255 east to hwy 135, turn north on hwy191 The main generating dam is on the Sabine River which you will cross first, about two mile up the road is a small dirt road to the right follow it all the way around to the left and you will end up at the creek. If you cross the spillway you've went too far! As for the license thing I'm not sure since the Sabine River is the state border putting Toro Creek in Louisiana. If you go to Yahoo Maps and do a search for Burkeville, Texas you will be able to find is easily, it even shows the dirt road. Quote
Super User senile1 Posted April 8, 2007 Super User Posted April 8, 2007 Catt, I'm looking foward to your report on your challenge. Let us know how it went and what you used. Quote
t bend tex Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 thanks catt I'll try to check it out this week! Larry g Quote
