justfishin Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 My buddies and I were talking the other day and discussing out strangest catches while fishing. I came up with: 1. I had a friend in my boat one morning and he was throwing a tiny torpedo for smallies and he had a owl swoop down out of a tree and my buddie hooked it in the leg and brought it in. Watching that owl attack him while he was attempting to unhook it was hilarious. 2. I was fishing the Lower Potomac one day and thought I had set the hook on a monster. I ended up with a pair of smelly high top Ked sneakers and one had a can of tuna fish in it and it was still unopened, go figure !!! Quote
=Matt 5.0= Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 As far as freshwater is concerned, I caught an Alligator Snapping Turtle on a rubber worm when I was about 10. No big deal For saltwater, we were pier fishing in Deerfield Beach, FL....my buddy is throwing ballyhoo for bait. As soon as the bait hits the water, this Pelican comes swooping down and scoops it up, and starts flying away. So guess what happens next... my buddies drag starts screaming as this bird is trying to fly away while hooked in the mouth! What a site to behold, my friend Johnny with his line straight up in the air trying to reel in this Pelican! The thing that was really akward was the crowd of people that was gathering around us, so I whipped out the Kershaw and cut his line before we had a real scene on our hands. What else could I do, the day before, another fisherman got cut on the face by a Pelican that was trying to steal his fish right out of his hands. The bird lunged at his face and cut him with it's beak. Nasty birds... Quote
Fish Man Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 its not all that strange but one time i hooked a catfish that had a orangish red egg sack or something of that sort hagin out of it :-? Quote

Super User Catt Posted February 24, 2007 Super User Posted February 24, 2007 Freshwater: 17 lb Opelousas Catfish & 2 freshwater drum over 25 lbs all on a craw worm Saltwater: Manta Ray Quote
deepsessions Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 freshwater- catching yellow perch off the dock at my local lake in grade school only to reel in and get smashed by the big brute largies underneath us...we actually hooked a few 4's and 5's over time once figuring out not to bring in the perch too fast and use bigger hooks. Runner up would be catching a 4lb cat last year on a trap. After getting him in he had t-rigged 6" worm in him also with a 3/0 Gama. saltwater- would have to be the classic "seagull mischief" I used to throw buzz bombs alot for Salmon in the Puget Sound. One time I casted out and I thought to myself man that's a hell of a cast its still in the air ;D well needless to say a seagull caught it or was snagged and was doin' figure 8's 50 yards out. I ended up cutting the line after a few hard jerks. Quote
Zonked Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 My buddy and I were cat fishing last fall at a local pond, I ended up snagging up on something heavy way out in the deepest part of the pond but I was able to slowly bring it in. First thought, it was a tree branch for sure...but when I got it ashore we discovered it was a snow shovel wrapped in black garbage bags and duct taped all around. We joked that it was a murder weapon and should probably notify the authorities. Pfft...yeah right and then have them come and drudge my favorite spot? NO WAY! Quote
Super User Munkin Posted February 24, 2007 Super User Posted February 24, 2007 Folding lawn chair at Four Locks on a crankbait that I released onto a nearby dock. Snapping turtle on a brush hog, catfish with rod and reel attached, bird on a tiny torpedo all at Blairs Valley lake. Owl that I missed the hookset on fishing a black jitterbug at night. Allen Quote
craigaria Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 I caught a purse one day and inside of it were 4 six inch catfish :-? No money though Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted February 24, 2007 Super User Posted February 24, 2007 This could have been some one else's weird catch story, but i was out plowing one day on a feild near the lake, and the seagulls came in like they always do to pick for worms. I noticed one was quite slow and limping around, so I got off the tractor and chased him down and removed a nice near new #11 floating rapala from him, win for both of us. New lure for me, aggrivating hook in the foot removed for the bird. Bout the only weird things I have ever caugth were some bullfrogs on zoom trick worm, they would NOT STOP till they ate it, so I let them have it just to get rid of them. Kinda neat they way they stalked it, bobbing under then popping up next to it ready for action. They were a chore to un-hook, but they were released unharmed. Also had a big bullfrog try to eat (or maybe mate)with my floating frog once too. Did catch 2 small 10-12" bass on a husky jerk once, thought Wow this is some fighter, lol, but they did pull hard. lunchbox508 Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 I caught a 6lb largemouth with 3 spinnerbaits in its lip and my worm! Not really strange but i guess lucky! Quote
dizzy5868 Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 I caught a rock the size of a baseball while fishing for smaiiels one day, I have sitting on my desk. Hooked it a crank and landed it. I thought it was a slammin smallie at first. Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 I went to set the hook on a buzzbait way too hard, ripped it out of the water, and I hooked by buddy's fly zipper, right through the little eyelet. I laughed for maybe 5 minutes straight. Quote
Super User T-rig Posted February 24, 2007 Super User Posted February 24, 2007 I once caught a beach umbrella! Quote
bassboy1 Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 We were trout fishing once and dad caught a coleman lantern. The ironic thing is we salvaged a piece off of it to fix ours that broke that morning. I caught a bath mat a different time while trout fishing. Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 I caught a rash, I had to put this smelly ointment on and it went away after a few days Quote
georgiabassfisherman Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 strangest thing i ever caught while fishing was the pedals off of a pedal boat while fishing for bream in a local pond. Quote

fezkoe Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 blue gill jumped out of the water towards my hook and landed on the shore. Also one time had to battle a bass with my hands(had to pull the line in with my hands). Quote
frogtog Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 Dead Man! Caught a dead guy on a 1/2oz jig. I was on the Tar river in Wasington NC. The guy jumped off the bridge about three months before. Messed my pants up good. Won't never be able to eat potted meat anymore. Man wished you could have seen those Deputys when I showed them the body, one of them got sick on my boat. Then they wanted to pull him in my boat. Well i can tell you, It didn't happen no sir. Ican tell you more on this story when I get time if you want to hear it. 8-) Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted February 25, 2007 Super User Posted February 25, 2007 While living int Middle East (Dubai) in the early 70's I caught about a five foot long Yellow Sea Snake out of the Persian Gulf on a fresh piece of shrimp. This snake is one of the most poisonous in the world. I cut my line while he was still about ten feet away and then splashed as fast as I could back to dry land I was standing barefoot in the surf in about two feet of water, and I just knew that that snake was after me. I sat on the beach and shook for fifteen minutes. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted February 25, 2007 Super User Posted February 25, 2007 I caught a jacket one time. Quote
