Super User Jig Man Posted February 27, 2007 Super User Posted February 27, 2007 I just fished a lake in TX where the water temp was 48-50° every day. I could only find fish on points part of the time they were on main lake points and part of the time they were on secondary points, but at no time did I find fish on any bank between the points. Some days depending on the sun and wind I would find fish as shallow as 2 fow and real close to the bank. Other days, they would be in 15 fow a long ways from the bank. I generally start deep and work my way shallow so I won't run the boat over fish. Quote
justfishin Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 After ice out and with temps in the range you are talking about, main lake points are my first choice, especially the ones that have a sharp 45 degree slope, are stair stepped, contain some structure, as well as, are close to a creek channel. A creek channel is a underwater highway the bass use to move up to these points. My favorite baits for these points are jigs ( usually 1/2 oz ) in black and blue or green pumpkin, 4" tubes in green pumpkin or a black or smoke color, 4" Dead Ringers, Senkos for suspended fish and slow rolled 1 1/2 single blade spinnerbaits. Another option is a no. 10 or 12 Husky Jerk in the deep diver style. I start at the very end of these points and work my way up until I find out where they are at in relation to these areas. Use your depth finder. If you can find a creek channel or point with some rip rap rock, sunken trees or wood piles, etc., this is a good choice and a good place to start your search. Good luck. Quote
frogtog Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 Main lake points are in the main lake and secondary points are the ones that are in the coves that join the lake. Fish will use secondary points when they are migrating back in the coves to spawn. Once the water temp reach 62 - 72 degrees. I always like to fish the coves first, then work my way out to the secondary points and then to the main lake points this time of year. Odds are in your favor if you do this. 8-) Quote
Curado Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 I would be fishing out off the bank with a jig, shaky head, might throw a deep crankbait in there, and a drop shot. Quote
