dman Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Seems like the higher end lures use the oval rings....What is this supposed to make better? Quote
Super User Jimzee Posted February 12, 2009 Super User Posted February 12, 2009 It keeps me from tying off in the split on a regular o-ring which can cause knot failure due to sharp edges. I prefer ovals and switch all my cranks over. Quote

Super User Muddy Posted February 12, 2009 Super User Posted February 12, 2009 but....sometimes I prefer a round split ring because on certain baits, ex. Bomber 8A, it will give the bait a slightly different action. Quote
21farms Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 the one major disadvantage i've noticed with oval rings is that they tend to get sprung rather easily. imho, the best rings are the tear drop-shaped ones made by x-calibur...best of all worlds. Quote
Super User CWB Posted February 13, 2009 Super User Posted February 13, 2009 It keeps me from tying off in the split on a regular o-ring which can cause knot failure due to sharp edges. I prefer ovals and switch all my cranks over. X2 They are also stronger due to better quality steel used, hence the higher cost. Probably not too important in bass fishing but hook a 30 lb. musky on a small crank and you'll appreciate quality components. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted February 13, 2009 Super User Posted February 13, 2009 Lucky Craft Lucky Rings for the win. As Jimzee said, the oval rings prevent tying in the split. I've spent at least 10 hours over the last year changing split rings. I don't have many baits that I haven't changed. Quote
fathom Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 have switched to ovals, as well. i don't see a down side to this. Quote
BIG M Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 I don't use any rings but I do like a duo-lock snap. That way I can blaze thru my box of cranks till I find the magic. I also feel that the snap gives my baits better action. Quote
bmadd Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 I agree with Marty, snaps all the way. I use the Berkley Cross-Loks though. Quote
Jeff P. Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 Another vote for the teardrop shaped split rings from Xcalibur. http://www.lurenet.com/catalog.aspx?catid=teardropsplitring Quote
